Mesoscale structures in signed networks.

Mesoscale structures in signed networks have been studied under the limiting assumption of the validity of social balance theory, which predicts positive connections within groups and negative connections between groups. Here, we propose and apply a methodology that overcomes this limitation and is able to find and characterize also the different possible unbalanced structures in signed networks. Applying our methodology to 24 empirical networks, from social-political, financial, and biological domains, we find that unbalanced mesoscale structures are prevalent in real-world networks, includin

Video calls for reducing social isolation and loneliness in older people: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: The current COVID-19 pandemic has been identified as a possible trigger for increases in loneliness and social isolation among older people due to the restrictions on movement that many countries have put in place. Loneliness and social isolation are consistently identified as risk factors for poor mental and physical health in older people. Video calls may help older people stay connected during the current crisis by widening the participant's social circle or by increasing the frequency of contact with existing acquaintances. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this rapid revie

Social networks and loneliness differ between LGBTIA and cis-heterosexual persons: results from a two-wave survey in Germany.

Current research suggests LGBTIA persons to be lonelier than cis-heterosexual persons. While they rely more on friends than on family as support network, their social network and weekly contact to family and friends, as well as the association between the social network and loneliness have not been fully explored yet. The aim of this analysis was to examine differences in the social network between LGBTIA and cis-heterosexual persons in Germany, and how these differences affect loneliness. Data was collected through an online survey conducted in two independent waves in March/April 2020 and in

A proposed model of the maintenance and exacerbation of body image and eating concerns in the context of problematic social network use.

Previous evidence supports the existence of a relationship between greater use of highly visual social media and heightened body image and eating concerns. However, to date, the role of problematic social network use has not been articulated in relation to these outcomes and the multiple dynamics underlying these associations need to be further conceptualized. Moreover, models of the exacerbation and maintenance of these body image concerns are lacking, and little attention has been paid to state-level predictors and maintenance factors. The aim of this position paper is to propose model of th

A neuroscience perspective on the plasticity of the social and relational brain.

Over the past two decades, the fields of social and contemplative neurosciences have made significant strides. Initial research utilizing fMRI identified neuronal networks involved in empathy, mentalizing, and compassion, as well as complex interactions among these networks. Subsequent studies shifted to testing the plasticity of these social skills via different types of mindfulness- or compassion-based mental training programs, demonstrating brain plasticity, enhanced social capacities and motivation, as well as improved mental health and overall well-being. Next, researchers developed scala

Amelioration and deterioration: Social network typologies and mental health among female domestic workers in China.

Previous quantitative studies on the effects of social network types on mental health have obtained inconsistent or conflicting results, due to problems such as sample selection bias or crude measurement of variables. In this study, we avoided these problems by using appropriate statistical methodology to examine the effect of various forms of social network on the mental health of a sample of 987 Chinese female domestic workers. Thus, we measured social network types in terms of both network attributes (friend networks and family networks) and interaction channels (face-to-face, telephone, an

Fear of negative evaluation mediates and core self-evaluation moderates the relationship between social comparison orientation and social network addiction.

Mental health problems among college students have become a pressing public health concern, with increasing evidence that excessive social media use exacerbates risks of anxiety, depression, and behavioral addictions. In the digital era, social comparison has intensified through online interactions, heightening students' sensitivity to peer evaluation and contributing to maladaptive outcomes such as social network addiction. To address this issue, the present study examined the relationship between social comparison orientation and social network addiction among Chinese college students, focus

Cancer patients on Twitter: a novel patient community on social media.

BackgroundPatients increasingly turn to the Internet for information on medical conditions, including clinical news and treatment options. In recent years, an online patient community has arisen alongside the rapidly expanding world of social media, or "Web 2.0." Twitter provides real-time dissemination of news, information, personal accounts and other details via a highly interactive form of social media, and has become an important online tool for patients. This medium is now considered to play an important role in the modern social community of online, "wired" cancer patients.ResultsFifty-o

COVID-19 and the Risk for Increased Intimate Partner Violence Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in the United States.

Stay at home orders-intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by limiting social contact-have forced people to remain in their homes. The additional stressors created by the need to stay home and socially isolate may act as triggers to intimate partner violence (IPV). In this article, we present data from a recent online cross-sectional survey with gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the United States to illustrate changes in IPV risks that have occurred during the U.S. COVID-19 epidemic. The Love and Sex in the Time of COVID-19 survey was conducted online from April t
