A 23-year-old woman with condylar resorption and a skeletal Class II pattern and anterior open bite were treated with 4 premolar extractions and temporary skeletal anchorage devices in both maxillary and mandibular arches. Before the start of orthodontic treatment, her unstable condylar position was stabilized with a stabilization splint for 6 months. Sequential evaluation of her condylar position was performed using a mandibular position indicator. The total active orthodontic treatment time was 30 months. After treatment, her occlusion, soft tissue profile, and unstable jaw position were sig

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare treatment outcomes for anterior occlusion and vertical skeletal stability after maxillary or mandibular surgery for correction of Class II malocclusion with a mild to moderate open bite.
METHODS: The records of 57 consecutive patients were retrieved; 30 had undergone 1-piece Le Fort I osteotomy, and 27 had undergone a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO), without additional surgery. Lateral cephalograms at 6 stages were available (pretreatment to 3 years postsurgery).
RESULTS: After the surgery, 87% of the Le Fort I patients and 63%

A healthy 15-year-old boy with anterior open bite, edge-to-edge transverse discrepancy, and Class III skeletal relationship sought a nonsurgical orthodontic treatment. The patient was treated with premolars extraction, a Hyrax expander and intrusion mechanics with vertical elastics. This mechanics allowed for excellent facial and occlusal results. The final occlusion presented Class I molar and canine relationships, ideal overjet and overbite, and straight facial profile. Analysis of the posttreatment and follow-up radiographs showed that the treatment outcomes remained stable seven years afte

INTRODUCTION: When miniplates are used as anchoring for orthodontic mechanics for anterior open bite correction by retraction of anterior teeth and posterior teeth intrusion and retraction, orthodontically induced inflammatory external apical root resorption is clinically negligible.
METHODS: A homogeneous sample of 32 patients was used, and the roots of the teeth were compared on CT scans performed before and after orthodontic treatment.
RESULTS: The observed root resorption was minimal, and this can be explained by the uniform distribution of forces in several teeth, simultaneously, in the

BACKGROUND: We successfully treated a 37-year-old male who had skeletal open bite with severe amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) with orthodontics, compression osteogenesis, and prosthodontics.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was diagnosed with severe anterior open bite caused by severe AI. Corticotomy was performed on both buccal and palatal sides of the molar regions, and anchor plates were placed onto the bilateral zygomatic buttress and the center of the hard palate. After corticotomy, posterior maxillary segments were moved 3.5 mm superiorly to correct skeletal open bite with elastic chains. Af

Acquired open bite mainly occurs after adolescence and is caused by a pathological or biological process. We herein report the case of an 18-year and 10-month-old Japanese woman. Her chief complaint was difficulty with mastication. Only distal cusps of first molars and second molars had contact. An angle class II molar relationship and extreme mesially inclined mandibular first molars were observed. The degree of overjet was +6.1mm and overbite was -2.0mm. There were no symptoms or abnormal findings in temporomandibular joints by radiography and magnetic resonance imaging. A skeletal class II

Anterior open bite (AOB) has a multifactorial etiology caused by the interaction of sucking habits and genetic factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between AOB and polymorphisms in genes that encode Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs). Four hundred and seventy-two children that presented at least one sucking habit were evaluated. Children were examined clinically for the presence of AOB. Genomic DNA was extracted from saliva. Genotyping of the selected polymorphisms in MMP2, MMP3, MMP9, TIMP1 and TIMP2 was carried out by real-time PCR

Clear aligner therapy (CAT) has been used successfully to correct minor spacing and crowding. It generally has not been indicated in more complicated malocclusions such as skeletal discrepancies and open bites; however, recent advances in technology and practitioner expertise now allow the use of CAT in these situations. This case report demonstrates the use of a CAT system (Invisalign) to correct a Class II malocclusion with crowding and an open bite tendency.

Temporomandibular joint total joint replacement, like any surgery, can be associated with either intraoperative or postoperative complications. Intraoperative complications may include injuries to local anatomical structures (e.g., blood vessels, nerves, middle ear, and external auditory canal), or poor positioning and/or adaptation of the prosthesis components to the host bone. Postoperative complications may include infection, hematoma, heterotopic bone formation, implant failure, pain, salivary fistula, foreign body or allergic reactions, and malocclusion. This article reports the occurrenc

Open tibiofibular fractures resulting from domestic animal bites are exceptional. We report two such cases, in patients of 11 and 13 years of age, and discuss the etiological, pathogenic, anatomic, and clinical aspects of these injuries. These were type III fractures according to the Cauchoix and Duparc classification. The fractures were treated with emergency wound care, wound dressing, and conservative orthopaedic treatment using a long leg cast for immobilization. Preventive parenteral antibiotics were also given. Evolution was favorable in both cases and the patients returned to their norm

Skeletal changes greater than those observed in untreated adults have been noted beyond 1 year post-surgery in adult patients who had surgical correction of a long face deformity. The stability of skeletal landmarks and dental relationships from 1 to >3 years post-surgery was examined in 28 patients who had undergone surgery of the maxilla only, and in 26 patients who had undergone 2-jaw surgery to correct >2 mm anterior open bite. Although the average changes in almost all landmark positions and skeletal dimensions were less than 1 mm, point B moved down >2 mm and face height increased >2 mm

Combined orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery and partial glossectomy were simultaneously performed in an adult male patient with mandibular prognathism and open bite from the lower right to the left first molars. Total active treatment period was 15 months. During the retention period, a tooth positioner was given to obtain proper interdigitation from set-up models. The post-surgical occlusion has been stable without any complication of the mandible and the tongue.

PURPOSE: Posterior open bites can result from several causes: trauma, degenerative changes, tongue thrust habits, single-tooth ankylosis, multiple-tooth ankylosis, and/or condylar hyperplasia. Occasionally, posterior open bites are secondary to a combination of condylar hyperplasia and dental ankylosis, which can be difficult to diagnose and treat because of the large array of causative problems.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article presents 2 unusual cases of posterior open bite secondary to multiple etiologies in adolescent male patients. A useful method of algorithmic diagnosis, treatment,

AIM: To show the use of an acrylic expander in the treatment of anterior open bite in patient with maxillary constriction and respiratory concern. Study design Clinical report. Setting "Fatebenefratelli" Hospital (Italy).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The open bite treatment represents a challenge for orthodontists because it is determined by several complementary factors such as: adenoid reduction, tongue posture, maxillary constriction etc. In order to correct the open bite, oral breathing and crowding, a bonded acrylic expander was used, avoiding patient cooperation.
RESULTS: The treatment was suc

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite malocclusion can be treated nonsurgically using fixed appliances, clear aligners, or temporary anchorage devices (TADs). Proponents of clear aligners and TADs often attribute bite closure to molar intrusion and counterclockwise rotation of the mandibular plane. These changes may be supported by superimpositions. However, the process of creating a superimposition is subjective and may be influenced by practitioner bias.
METHODS: The initial and final lateral cephalograms from 30 adult anterior patients with open bite were used in this study. Ten patients were t

OBJECTIVES: A skeletal anterior open-bite is a challenging malocclusion for the orthodontist due to the difficulty and instability of correction. Treatment options for the adult patient include extractions, anterior extrusion with intermaxillary elastics, posterior intrusion using skeletal anchorage, occlusal adjustment, and orthognathic surgery. Patient compliance plays a key role in posttreatment stability. The present case report demonstrates the orthodontic treatment of an adult patient who presented with a complex open-bite malocclusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment involved the plac
