[Immunohistochemical detection of humoral autoantibodies in patients with hearing loss in the last hearing ear].

BACKGROUND: An autoimmune etiology similar to the sympathetic ophthalmia has been discussed for sensorineural hearing loss on the last hearing ear following deafness in the first ear. In sympathetic cochleolabyrinthitis inner ear proteins are thought to be released after laterobasal fracture, which may induce an autoimmune process in the last hearing ear. Animal models have failed to clearly demonstrate the location of the target in the labyrinth, attacked by immunologic processes. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the humoral or cellular pathway is initiating this process. METHODS AND PATIE

[War injuries of the eye and post-traumatic glaucoma].

The authors present a problem secondary posttraumatic glaucoma caused by perforative eye injuries or contusions of the eyeball. Posttraumatic glaucoma after perforative injuries appears in high percentage 25-67%, with the postcontusion glaucoma is rare, and appears in 2-5% cases. It can appear near after injury but also after 10 years. This type of glaucoma has specific clinic finding, inversive type of tonometry, curve, retention type of curve and long interval without rise intraocular pressure. Prognosis of this glaucoma is very difficult and unsure. Most cases finish with blindness and enuc

The role of sex in uveitis and ocular inflammation.

Uveitides can be due to non-infectious and infectious etiologies. It has been observed that there is a gender difference with a greater preponderance of non-infectious uveitis in women than in men. This review will describe both non-infectious and infectious uveitides and describes some of the current autoimmune mechanisms thought to be underlying the gender difference. It will specifically look at non-infectious uveitides with systemic involvement including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, spondyloarthopathies, sarcoidosis, Behçet’s disease, and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease and at uveitides wit

[Results after cyclodiathermy: report on 29 eyes].

BACKGROUND: Persisting angle-closure glaucomas with circular anterior synechia and lost anterior chamber are at the moment an unsolved therapeutical problem. Antiglaucomatous anterior cyclodiathermy is a last therapeutical option to serve the eye. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively examined the results and the complications of 29 eyes, which were consecutively treated with anterior cyclodiathermy between 1992 and 1998. RESULTS: We found a significant decrease of the intraocular pressure (IOP) during mean follow-up of 10 month, reduction of antiglaucoma medication, no change of visual a

The first German textbook of ophthalmology "Augendienst" by G. Bartisch, 1583.

This book contains various illustrations, portraits and an exact index, testimonials proving the author's professional successes as well as an accurate list of the qualities that should be demanded from any ophthalmologist. The anatomy of the head and eye is described according to Galen's ideas and Vesalius' book. Many remedies, prescriptions and medical treatments are discussed, partly showing the mystic influences of the Middle Ages. Bartisch reports several diseases for the first time: Allergic reactions, sympathetic ophthalmia, hemeralopia, photoelectric keratoconjunctivitis, amaurosis due

Ophthalmic injuries: handbook of initial evaluation and management.

Initial management of ophthalmic injury in the combat zone of guerrilla warfare has been discussed primarily from the vantage points of paramedical personnel and the physician nonophthalmologist. Details of surgical management have been greatly abbreviated and many areas not discussed at all, since they lie beyond the scope of this report. Continuing improvement and innovations in this report. Continuing improvement and innovations in this sphere require constant familiarity with current ophthalamic literature. Most, if not all, of the methods of examination and treatment described in this pap

Repositioning of a traumatically displaced globe with maxillary antrostomy: review of the literature and treatment recommendations.

Complete dislocation of the globe, inferiorly into the maxillary sinus, medially into the ethmoid sinus, or superiorly into the anterior cranial fossa, can occur with significant blunt facial trauma. The degree of injury to the globe, its adnexal structures, and the optic nerve is dependent on the extent of the dislocation. Complete traumatic subluxation of the globe into the maxillary sinus is associated with severe injury to the periocular structures and represents a challenging and unique reconstructive process rarely encountered in published studies. The present case report represents only

[Ambulatory care of patients with sequelae of eye trauma].

On the grounds of results of observations over 1642 patients with eye traumas and their outcomes a system of dispensary observation over patients with this pathology has been worked out. Main groups of patients with outcomes after eye traumas requiring dispensarization are determined: sequelae after trauma of the protective system and eye adnexa, cornea, iris, lens, vitreous body, retina, intraocular foreign bodies, post-traumatic disturbances in intraocular pressure, changes in the retina and optic nerve, traumatic uveitis and sympathetic ophthalmia at the stage of remission. Terms, incidence

Functional outcome and prognostic factors in 304 eyes managed by retinectomy.

BACKGROUND: This study was undertaken to relate the anatomic and functional results of patients who underwent retinectomy for complex retinal detachment (RD) to preoperative prognostic variables. METHODS: Three hundred and four eyes of 302 patients whose surgery involved retinectomy were included in the analysis. All eyes had established proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR grade C). The main outcome measures were (1) postoperative visual acuity of 6/24 or better, (2) status of the retina at the end of follow-up, and (3) incidence of hypotony whilst under review. RESULTS: PVR was secondary t

Update on enucleation and evisceration surgery.

The best operative results with fewest complications after enucleation surgery can be achieved by following basic principles, some of which are those of conservative tissue excision, using spherical implants placed behind Tenon's capsule into the muscle cone and avoiding surgical techniques that overlap the extraocular muscles (especially the superior rectus) over the front of the implant. The presence of an intraocular tumor demands that an enucleation be done. When the possible development of sympathetic ophthalmia is not present, the surgeon should consider doing an evisceration because of

[The eyes of Johann Sebastian Bach].

Limited vision seems to have been Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) only physical problem. Myopia seems the most likely cause and he probably developed cataracts later in life. In addition to the cataracts, his worsening vision may have been due in part to some other eye problem. In 1750 Bach's vision became so poor that he had his eyes operated on by the travelling English eye surgeon John Taylor. Most likely the first operation was Taylor's standard couching procedure. About one week after the first operation, Bach was operated on again because of the reappearance of the cataract. Many pai

Subretinal Hypopyon in Presumed Tubercular Uveitis: A Report of Two Cases.

Subretinal hypopyon is an uncommon entity which has been described in ocular infections and inflammations including endophthalmitis, acute retinal necrosis, and sympathetic ophthalmia. The authors report subretinal hypopyon in two cases of presumed tubercular uveitis which responded well to antitubercular therapy (ATT). The first case was a 47-year-old male with bilateral peripapillary chorioretinitis with a subretinal hypopyon. Tuberculosis was confirmed on biopsy of a cervical lymph node which revealed acid-fast bacilli. Case 2 was a 17-year-old male with unilateral involvement in the form o

Cyclodestructive procedures. I. Clinical and morphological aspects: a review.

Laser cyclophotocoagulation is an accepted method of cyclodestruction, such as cyclocryothermy and the application of cyclodiathermy, microwaves and ultrasound. These procedures may be considered as ultima ratios or 'last-resort interventions'. Also, in cases where surgery is not possible, cyclodestruction may be the initial intervention. Among other lasers, the Nd:YAG and diode lasers are the energy sources of choice. Contact and noncontact methods have about the same clinical efficiency and risk. While immediate complications are transitory, other, late complications, mentioned in the world

Seeing is believing: A review of apheresis therapy in the treatment of ophthalmologic disease.

Apheresis procedures have a role in treatment of disparate diseases involving many different organ systems. Often the disease processes where apheresis plays a role in treatment are considered "orphan diseases"-relatively rare disease processes that lack specific pharmaceutical agents or established treatment protocols. Many of these disease processes can affect the eye with devastating results for the eyesight of these patients. The unique ability of apheresis to affect disease by modifying blood plasma and modulating disease-causing agents therein renders apheresis procedures valuable tools

Abnormal increase of intraocular pressure in fellow eye after severe ocular trauma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: An ocular injury can lead to secondary glaucoma in the traumatized eye in 3% to 20% of cases. Literature on the risk of developing elevated intraocular pressure in the nontraumatized fellow eye is scant. Clinicians treating ocular traumas should also bear in mind sympathetic ophthalmia, a rare bilateral granulomatous panuveitis following accidental or surgical trauma to 1 eye. CASE REPORT: We report a case of high-pressure glaucoma of the fellow eye without any signs of uveitis. The left eye of a 24-year-old man was injured in an inadvertent movement during a free-time table-tenni

The characteristic features of optical coherence tomography in posterior uveitis.

AIM: To describe the different retinal morphological characteristics that can present on optical coherence topography (OCT) in a spectrum of uveitic diseases. METHODS: We reviewed the literature and our own OCT image archive for characteristic features that may be suggestive of a particular disease process. RESULTS: OCT demonstrates a variety of characteristic morphological changes, some that may point towards a specific disease process. We describe the various forms of macular oedema found in uveitis as well as OCT features typically found in multifocal choroiditis, serpiginous chorioretini
