BACKGROUND: Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is one of the most prevalent adverse events associated with cancer patients who receive opioid analgesics for moderate to severe pain. Acupuncture may be an effective treatment for OIC. We designed this trial to assess the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture for OIC in cancer patients.
METHODS: This is a multicenter, sham-controlled, parallel-group, subject- and assessor-blinded randomized trial. A total of 100 cancer patients with OIC will be randomly assigned to either the electroacupuncture group or the sham electroacupuncture group at a

Background and Objectives: Opioid analgesics, which are used for cancer-related pain management, cause opioid-induced constipation (OIC). Naldemedine, a peripheral opioid receptor antagonist, is an OIC-modifying agent, but no focused efficacy and safety analysis has been conducted for its use in hepatobiliary pancreatic cancers. We performed a multi-institutional study on the efficacy and safety of naldemedine in patients with hepatobiliary pancreatic cancer using opioids in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with hepatobiliary pancreatic cancer (in

PURPOSE: Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is the most common side effect in patient-prescribed opioids for cancer pain treatment. Current guidelines recommend routine prescription of a laxative for preventing OIC in all patients prescribed an opioid unless a contraindication exists. We determined patterns of prescription of laxative agents in patients with lung cancer initiating opioids.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study evaluating the prescription of laxatives for OIC to adult patients with incident lung cancer seen in the Veteran's Affairs (VA) system, between January 1, 2

Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is one of the major side effects in patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Quite often, constipation becomes a factor significantly affecting therapeutic options and choices. Currently used approaches are symptomatic and in many cases ineffective. At the same time, it is well known that the gastrointestinal system is a subject for psychosomatic influences. In this case report, we describe an unexpected outcome of placebo administration in a patient suffering from OIC since her participation in MMT. The patient participated in a triple-blind

INTRODUCTION: Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) affects up to 90% of patients with cancer receiving long-term opioid-related analgesic therapy, resulting in various potential complications, compromised pain management and decreased quality of life. Laxatives stimulate or facilitate bowel evacuation. Traditional laxatives, such as polyethylene glycol and lactulose, are widely used because of their low cost, easy accessibility and tolerability. OIC prophylaxis with laxatives is recommended for patients receiving opioid therapy. However, systematic reviews that support this practice are lacking.

INTRODUCTION: This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of naldemedine for treating opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in non-cancer patients, focusing on SBM, serious TEAEs, GI side effects, opioid withdrawal, and other adverse events (AEs).
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assess methodological quality. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. A random-effects model was applied to analyze outcomes using Revie

BACKGROUND: Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) has become increasingly prevalent with the rise of prescription opioid use, particularly in patients with advanced illnesses. Existing literature suggests that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) could be applied to treat cancer pain and reduce OIC incidence. However, there need to be more systematic review studies on the effectiveness of TENS in treating OIC.
OBJECTIVE: In order to fill the gap of TENS in treating OIC in current knowledge, we have conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis.
METHODS: The comprehensive

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to provide an overview of opioid-induced constipation (OIC) and its influence on disease burden and quality of life (QOL).
METHODS: This is a narrative review.
RESULTS: For many patients, opioid-related side effects, the most common being OIC, have the potential to significantly impair patients' QOL. Patients with OIC often experience substantial overall burden (ie, increases in anxiety and depression, impairments in activities of daily living, low self-esteem, feelings of embarrassment) and economic burden (ie, higher health care costs, more freque

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Opioid analgesics are often effective for pain management, but may cause constipation. The aim of this study was to determine healthcare resource use and costs in non-cancer and cancer patients with opioid-induced constipation (OIC).
METHODS: This was a nationwide register-based cohort study including patients ≥18 years of age initiating ≥4 weeks opioid therapy (1998-2012) in Denmark. A measure of OIC was constructed based on data from Danish national health registries, and defined as ≥1 diagnosis of constipation, diverticulitis, mega colon, ileus/subileus, abdominal pain/

The efficacy and safety of naldemedine for opioid-induced constipation in patients with cancer has not been investigated in clinical practice. We conducted a multicenter, retrospective study to assess the effects of naldemedine among 10 Japanese institutions between June 2017 and August 2019. We evaluated the number of defecations 7 days before and after naldemedine administration. A total of 149 patients (89 male) with a median age of 72 years (range, 38−96) were included. The performance status was 0−1, 2, and ≥3 in 40, 38, and 71 patients, respectively. The median opioid dose in oral morphi

INTRODUCTION: There are few reports describing the association of naldemedine with defecation in critically ill patients with opioid-induced constipation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether naldemedine is associated with earlier defecation in critically ill patients with opioid-induced constipation.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) without defecation for 48 hours while receiving opioids were eligible for enrollment. The primary endpoint was the time of the first defecation within 96 hours after inclusion. Secondary

BACKGROUND: Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is the most prevalent side effect of methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). Naloxone could reduce the OIC.
METHOD: Fifty-six MMT cases (< 75 mg/day methadone, > 3 months) were entered randomly into four groups of a trial. They received placebo or naloxone tablets (0.5, 2, or 4 mg/day) once a day for 2 weeks. They continued their conventional laxative. Their constipation and opiate withdrawal (OWS) were evaluated by the Bristol Stool Form Scale (stool consistency and frequency), Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms (PAC-SYM) questionnaire, Con

Naldemedine is indicated for the treatment of opioid-induced constipation (OIC), but reports on its efficacy in preventing OIC are few. Therefore, we retrospectively investigated factors affecting the efficacy of concurrent prescription of naldemedine on OIC. Outpatients with cancer who were started on oxycodone 10 mg/d were included in the study. The eligible patients were classified by their physicians into the following three groups: Group A used regular laxatives before the introduction of oxycodone and initiated naldemedine treatment simultaneously with oxycodone administration, Group B d

The Naloxegol Cancer Study (NACASY) was a multinational European study aimed to evaluate the 4-week safety and efficacy of naloxegol in a real-world setting in patients with cancer pain diagnosed with opioid-induced constipation. The primary safety endpoint was the incidence of adverse events leading to study discontinuation. We recruited 170 patients who received at least one dose of naloxegol (i.e., safety population). Out of 170 patients, 20 (11.8%, 95%CI 6.9-16.6) discontinued the study due to adverse events, and, of them, 12 (7.1%, 95%CI 3.2-10.9%) were study discontinuations due to nalox
