Aging-related changes in cortical mechanisms supporting postural control during base of support and optic flow manipulations.

Behavioral findings suggest that aging alters the involvement of cortical sensorimotor mechanisms in postural control. However, corresponding accounts of the underlying neural mechanisms remain sparse, especially the extent to which these mechanisms are affected during more demanding tasks. Here, we set out to elucidate cortical correlates of altered postural stability in younger and older adults. 3D body motion tracking and high-density electroencephalography (EEG) were measured while 14 young adults (mean age = 24 years, 43% women) and 14 older adults (mean age = 77 years, 50% women) perform

Flow Changes in Orbital Vessels Detected with Color Doppler Ultrasound in Patients with Early Dysthyroid Optic Neuropathy.

Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) is a common manifestation of Graves' disease. The aim of the study was to assess the six percent of patients with TAO that develop dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON), which is the most serious complication of TAO. As DON can cause perma-nent damage, it is essential to detect DON early when visual loss is still reversible. Color Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic method, which may be useful in early detection of DON. Thirty-six patients with confirmed Graves' disease and active TAO were included, 21 (58%) of them with early DON (eDON) and 15 (42%)

Optic Nerve Head Blood Flow, as Measured by Laser Speckle Flowgraphy, Is Significantly Reduced in Preperimetric Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To compare optic nerve head (ONH) blood flow in healthy eyes, eyes with preperimetric glaucoma (PPG), and eyes with mild normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) using laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG). METHODS: In 172 eyes (normal: 44 eyes; PPG: 62 eyes; mild NTG: 66 eyes), LSFG was used to measure mean blur rate in the ONH tissue area (MBRT), an index of capillary blood flow. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine factors affecting circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (cpRNFLT), mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) of the visual field. High-precision wavefront sensing for extended objects via a correlation-optical flow hybrid algorithm.

In extended object wavefront sensing for astronomical high-resolution imaging and medical microscopy imaging, the object's intrinsic structure violates the conventional point-source assumption, limiting the accuracy of existing methods. To address this, we propose a hybrid wavefront sensing algorithm combining cross-correlation and optical flow estimation: an enhanced sum-of-squared-differences function for global coarse positioning, a physically constrained optical flow model for subpixel fine estimation, and an adaptive template update to control computational cost. Compared to conventional

Advanced optical measurement techniques for simultaneous fibre orientation and flow analysis complemented by machine learning.

A new measuring method is presented that allows time-resolved quasi-simultaneous measurement of fibre orientation and flow velocity of a transparent fluid such as a substitute fluid for fresh concrete or polymer melt, thus enabling the flow-related fibre orientation process to be visualised and thus better understood. In order to study individual fibres and their orientation in detail a PIV-based measurement stand was built, which is capable of analysing the flow and the fibre orientation in the suspension quasi-simultaneously. To measure the fibre orientation, black light can be switched on s

A Magnetic-Optical Triple-Mode Lateral Flow Immunoassay for Sensitive and Rapid Detection of Respiratory Adenovirus.

Human respiratory adenovirus (ADV) is a highly infectious respiratory virus with potential for pandemics. There are currently no specific drugs to treat ADV worldwide, so early rapid detection of ADV infection is essential. In this study, we developed an innovative magnetic-optical triple-mode lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) using magnetic quantum dots as immunomarkers. This novel approach addresses the need for rapid and accurate ADV detection, allowing for multimodal quantitative/semiquantitative analysis of magnetic, fluorescent, and visible signals within a mere 15 min. The lower limit of

From the eye to the wing: neural circuits for transforming optic flow into motor output in avian flight.

Avian flight is guided by optic flow-the movement across the retina of images of surfaces and edges in the environment due to self-motion. In all vertebrates, there is a short pathway for optic flow information to reach pre-motor areas: retinal-recipient regions in the midbrain encode optic flow, which is then sent to the cerebellum. One well-known role for optic flow pathways to the cerebellum is the control of stabilizing eye movements (the optokinetic response). However, the role of this pathway in controlling locomotion is less well understood. Electrophysiological and tract tracing studie

Combining inertial sensors and optical flow to assess finger movements: Pilot study for telehealth applications.

Parkinson's disease is the fastest growing neurological disorder worldwide. Traditionally, diagnosis and monitoring of its motor manifestations depend on examination of the speed, amplitude, and frequency of movement by trained providers. Despite the use of validated scales, clinical examination of movement is semi-quantitative, relatively subjective and it has become a major challenge during the ongoing pandemic. Using digital and technology-based tools during synchronous telehealth can overcome these barriers but it requires access to powerful computers and high-speed internet. In resource-l

An Edge-device Based Fast Fall Detection Using Spatio-temporal Optical Flow Model.

The elderly fall detection is one critical function in health of the elderly. A real-time fall detection for the elderly has been a significant healthcare issue. The traditional video analysis on cloud has large communication overhead. In this paper, a fast fall detection system based on the spatio-temporal optical flow model is proposed, which is further deeply compressed by a structured tensorization towards an implementation on edge devices. Firstly, an object extractor is built to extract motion objects from video clips. The spatio-temporal optical flow model is formed to estimate optical

Noninvasive optical assessment of resting-state cerebral blood flow in children with sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that has profound effects on the brain. Chronic anemia combined with both macro- and microvascular perfusion abnormalities that arise from stenosis or occlusion of blood vessels increased blood viscosity, adherence of red blood cells to the vascular endothelium, and impaired autoregulatory mechanisms in SCD patients all culminate in susceptibility to cerebral infarction. Indeed, the risk of stroke is 250 times higher in children with SCD than in the general population. Unfortunately, while transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) has been wide

Unsupervised Learning for Depth, Ego-Motion, and Optical Flow Estimation Using Coupled Consistency Conditions.

Herein, we propose an unsupervised learning architecture under coupled consistency conditions to estimate the depth, ego-motion, and optical flow. Previously invented learning techniques in computer vision adopted a large amount of the ground truth dataset for network training. A ground truth dataset, including depth and optical flow collected from the real world, requires tremendous effort in pre-processing due to the exposure to noise artifacts. In this paper, we propose a framework that trains networks while using a different type of data with combined losses that are derived from a coupled

Tracking large Anterior Mitral Leaflet displacements by incorporating optical flow in an active contours framework.

Echocardiography is an important tool to detect early evidence of mitral valve degradation associated with rheumatic heart disease. The segmentation and tracking of the Anterior Mitral Leaflet helps to quantify the morphologic valve anomalies, such as the leaflet thickening, shape and the mobility changes. The tracking of this leaflet throughout the cardiac cycle is still an open challenge in the research community. The widely used active contours segmentation framework fails when faced with large leaflet displacement. In this work, we propose the integration of optical flow in an open-ended a

Near-infrared diffuse optical monitoring of cerebral blood flow and oxygenation for the prediction of vasovagal syncope.

Significant drops in arterial blood pressure and cerebral hemodynamics have been previously observed during vasovagal syncope (VVS). Continuous and simultaneous monitoring of these physiological variables during VVS is rare, but critical for determining which variable is the most sensitive parameter to predict VVS. The present study used a novel custom-designed diffuse correlation spectroscopy flow-oximeter and a finger plethysmograph to simultaneously monitor relative changes of cerebral blood flow (rCBF), cerebral oxygenation (i.e., oxygenated/deoxygenated/total hemoglobin concentration: r[H

Primary ciliary dyskinesia assessment by means of optical flow analysis of phase-contrast microscopy images.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia implies cilia with defective or total absence of motility, which may result in sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and male infertility. Diagnosis can be difficult and is based on an abnormal ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and beat pattern. In this paper, we present a method to determine CBF of isolated cells through the analysis of phase-contrast microscopy images, estimating cilia motion by means of an optical flow algorithm. After having analyzed 28 image sequences (14 with a normal beat pattern and 14 with a dyskinetic pattern), the normal group presented
