Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been demonstrated as promising candidates for ultracompact entangled photon sources and on-chip integrated quantum photonic devices. Ferroelectric van der Waals materials have recently emerged as promising ultrathin sources of entangled photons via nonlinear optical processes. Here, the authors compare spontaneous parametric down conversion in NbOBr2 and NbOI2, demonstrating near infrared polarization entangled photon generation and linking performance to crystal structure and optical properties. Our results extend the wavelength range of NbOX2-based SPDC so

Pseudo-spin and valley degrees of freedom engineered in photonic analogues of topological insulators provide potential approaches to optical encoding and robust signal transport. Here we observe a ballistic edge state whose spin-valley indices are locked to the direction of propagation along the interface between a valley photonic crystal and a metacrystal emulating the quantum spin-Hall effect. We demonstrate the inhibition of inter-valley scattering at a Y-junction formed at the interfaces between photonic topological insulators carrying different spin-valley Chern numbers. These results ope

Finite barrier bound state (FBBS) represents a unique class of boundary modes characterized by negligible inter-waveguide tunneling, even at subwavelength separations. Although such states hold great promise for suppressing optical crosstalk in integrated photonics, existing FBBS implementations suffer from significant radiation losses because of their eigenfrequencies lying within the bulk continuum. In this work, we introduce a double-channel waveguide system based on honeycomb photonic lattices made of lithium niobate, which supports FBBSs with eigenfrequencies fully residing within the pho

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: A number of publications have suggested that optical coherence tomography (OCT) has the potential for non-invasive diagnosis of skin cancer. Currently, individual diagnostic features do not appear sufficiently discriminatory. The combined use of several features may however be useful.
METHODS: OCT is based on infrared light, photonics and fibre optics. The system used has an axial resolution of 10 mum, lateral 20 mum. We investigated the combined use of several OCT features from basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and actinic keratosis (AK). We studied BCC (41) and AK (37) lesions

The outbreak of life-threatening pandemic like COVID-19 necessitated the development of novel, rapid and cost-effective techniques that facilitate detection of viruses like SARS-CoV-2. The presently popular approach of a collection of samples using the nasopharyngeal swab method and subsequent detection of RNA using the real-time polymerase chain reaction suffers from false-positive results and a longer diagnostic time scale. Alternatively, various optical techniques namely optical sensing, spectroscopy, and imaging shows a great promise in virus detection. Herein, a comprehensive review of th

Classical linear optics posits that at sufficiently low intensities, light propagation in dielectric media is governed solely by their linear susceptibilities. Here, we demonstrate a departure from this paradigm in high-quality (high-Q) microresonators, where prolonged photon confinement enables rare quantum electrodynamical (QED) events, mediated by the quantum vacuum, to embed distinctive Raman signatures of the coupled analyte into the resonator's linear transmission spectrum despite their absence from linear susceptibility. We further show that increasing the amount of adsorbed analyte sam

All-optical synapses (AOS) that integrate sensing and processing of photonic signals represent a transformative frontier for optical computing and neuromorphic imaging. Most existing AOSs are limited to unidirectional weight modulation, achieving both excitation and inhibition output through all-optical pathway remains a challenge. Here we report a dual-photon-mediated strategy that achieving bidirectional neuroplasticity within a phosphorescent and photothermal carbon dot hybrid (CDH) neurotransmitter. Spatiotemporal modulation approaches have been often employed as alternatives for producing optical nonreciprocity without magneto-optic materials. Unidirectional inter-modal scattering, enabled by either acousto-optic or electro-optic (EO) modulation, is a promising method in this category as it can directly modify optical dispersions and even enables linear nonreciprocal photonic devices in the strong coupling limit. Although EO approaches are often preferred for their practicality, it is challenging to generate the large spatiotemporal momentum required for inter-modal phase matching withou

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals embedded in a glass matrix are promising materials for optical applications due to their stability under high temperatures and various environmental conditions. Their bright and tunable photoluminescence makes them suitable for nonlinear optics applications. For the first time, a systematic study of photoluminescence excitation spectra was conducted for inorganic perovskite nanocrystals with three types of halides, synthesized in a fluorophosphate glass matrix, using two-photon excitation at low temperatures. A comparison of one-photon and two-photon photolu

Flexible photonic fibers enable precise, interference-free multimodal tactile sensing in wearable interfaces, owing to their intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic interference and cross-modal coupling, together with rapid response. Until now, optical fibers that simultaneously exhibit mechanical robustness, signal decoupling, and environmental stability remain scarce, and system-level integration is even rarer. Inspired by the distributed sensory arrangement of jellyfish tentacles, we propose a photonic skin composed of coaxially structured hydrogel optical fibers, in which pressure and temper

Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) offers high data rate and low latency, making it an important complement to underwater acoustic communication. In particular, single-photon UWOC (SP-UWOC) has attracted increasing attention because of its high sensitivity and potential for long-range transmission. However, the dead time of a single-photon detector makes it difficult to achieve effective pulse recognition and communication with a single-pixel detection scheme. In addition, the highly collimated laser beam, water turbulence, and underwater platform motion impose stringent optical

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cherenkov imaging has emerged as a promising real-time optical dosimetry modality for treatment visualization and delivery verification. However, the dependence of Cherenkov emission on photon field size and beam-quality variations remains insufficiently characterized, particularly for highly modulated small-field delivery techniques. This work investigated whether field-size-dependent changes in dose delivery affected the production of Cherenkov photons.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cherenkov emission from a tissue-equivalent optical phantom was imaged using an intensified c

Photonic Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling in anisotropic microcavities offers a compelling platform for realizing unconventional topological states with non-zero Berry curvature. In this study, we explore a self-assembled two-dimensional hybrid structure composed of anisotropically oriented organic/inorganic halide perovskite layers confined within a microcavity. The strong optical anisotropies of these perovskite systems, driven by significant refractive index contrasts and robust excitonic resonances at room temperature, enable the emergence of synthetic magnetic fields that mediate photonic and

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has been extensively studied and repurposed for diverse practical applications, such as optical measurement and sensing, and microwave photonics filter. SBS based optical filters face inherent limitations due to polarization-dependent gain fluctuations caused by fiber birefringence and environmental perturbations. To address these challenges, we establish a comprehensive theoretical model of polarization evolution in the fiber and implement depolarization via the Faraday effect. Building on this insight, we propose and experimentally validate a polarizatio

Photonic circuits are central to classical and quantum information processing. While integrated technologies dominate, free-space architectures are emerging as attractive alternatives, offering broad bandwidth and direct manipulation of optical modes without confinement in waveguides. A key challenge for scalability lies in circuit depth, as the number of layers manipulating the optical field typically grows with the system size. Here, we introduce a programmable free-space photonic platform that implements translation-invariant, high-dimensional unitary transformations using only three layers

Next-generation superconducting quantum computers face scalability limitations due to the increasing number of required interconnects from room temperature into the cryogenic environment. Scalability can be improved by transitioning to photonic links, and even further scaling can be obtained by employing wavelength multiplexing. This would allow to replace multiple RF cables by a single optical fiber. However, experimental demonstration of a cryogenic multichannel optical-to-microwave converter, required for demultiplexing incoming optical signals and performing conversion to microwave signals

Photonic technologies promise to deliver quantitative, multiplex, and inexpensive medical diagnostic platforms by leveraging the highly scalable processes developed for the fabrication of semiconductor microchips. However, in practice, the affordability of these platforms is limited by complex and expensive sample handling and optical alignment. We previously reported the development of a disposable photonic assay that incorporates inexpensive plastic micropillar microfluidic cards for sample delivery. That system as developed was limited to singleplex assays due to its optical configuration.

Van der Waals (vdW) materials have emerged as a promising platform for next-generation nanophotonics and optoelectronics. However, employing vdW materials as a core photonic integration platform, rather than as passive or active overlays on conventional silicon-based platforms, remains challenging, leaving their full potential untapped. Here we develop a nanofabrication strategy that enables high-resolution patterning across a broad range of vdW materials, including insulators, semiconductors, ferroelectrics and their heterostructures, and we show that they can be used as the intrinsic platfor

Surface and interface engineering has become a decisive factor in determining the performance and reliability of integrated photonic sensors. As photonic device architectures advance and geometric optimization strategies approach their fundamental performance limits, the nanoscale interface region where confined optical modes interact with the surrounding environment progressively becomes the dominant factor governing sensitivity, noise characteristics, and long-term operational stability. This review critically examines recent advances in these strategies applied to integrated photonic sensin

Photonic molecules can realize complex optical energy modes that simulate states of matter and have application to quantum, linear, and nonlinear optical systems. To achieve their full potential, it is critical to scale the photonic molecule energy state complexity and provide flexible, controllable, stable, high-resolution energy state engineering with low power tuning mechanisms. In this work, we demonstrate a controllable, silicon nitride integrated photonic molecule, with three high-quality factor ring resonators strongly coupled to each other and individually actuated using ultralow-power
