Trajectories of Emotional Exhaustion and Their Contribution to Depression: Optimism as a Buffer in Young People.

BACKGROUND: In Mexico, depression is one of the main mental health problems, with university students being particularly susceptible. Recent studies have explored the relationship between emotional factors and depression in young people. Our study investigates whether optimism buffers the indirect relationship between burnout, stress and coping in mitigating the negative effects on depressive symptoms in young university students. We hypothesized that optimism would moderate the negative impacts of stress and emotional exhaustion on depression. METHODS: In total, 497 students of a university

Cystic fibrosis in Europe: improved lung function and longevity - reasons for cautious optimism, but challenges remain.

BACKGROUND: Prognosis and disease severity in cystic fibrosis (CF) are linked to declining lung function. To characterise lung function by the number of adults in countries with different levels of Gross National Income (GNI), data from the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Patient Registry were utilised. METHODS: Annual data including age, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), anthropometry, genotype, respiratory cultures and CF-related diabetes (CFRD) were retrieved between 2011 and 2021. All countries were stratified into GNI per capita to reflect differences within Europe. RESULTS: A co

Optimism and Obstacles: Racialized Constraints in College Attitudes and Expectations among Teens of the Prison Boom.

Using data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, we estimate associations of paternal incarceration with three measures of teens' attitudes and expectations: (1) optimism about the future, (2) perceived importance of college graduation, and (3) perceived likelihood of college graduation. Results suggest that whereas optimism toward the future and the importance of college are resilient in the face of paternal incarceration, teens' expectations of actual college completion are reduced, particularly for Black youth. An examination of micro-, meso-, and macro-level mechanisms sug

Rapid progress in our understanding of COVID-19 vaccine allergy: A cause for optimism, not hesitancy.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition and when associated with vaccination, leads to vaccine hesitancy. The concerns around vaccine-related anaphylaxis have become even more important during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic where the COVID-19 vaccines remain one of our most important tools. Although rates of anaphylaxis to COVID-19 vaccines are not significantly different from those to other vaccines, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance recommends avoidance of the same COVID-19 vaccine in individuals who had an allergic reaction or are allergic to a COVID-

Optimism is associated with diet quality, food group consumption and snacking behavior in a general population.

BACKGROUND: Dispositional optimism is a psychological trait that has been associated with positive health outcomes such as reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, there is little knowledge on the relationship between optimism and dietary intake in the population. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess whether optimism was associated with overall diet quality, food group consumption and snacking. METHODS: In 2016, 32,806 adult participants from the NutriNet-Santé study completed the Life-Orientation Test Revised (LOT-R) which assesses dispositional optimism. Overal

Pre-term delivery, optimism and initial personal growth as predictors of mothers' long-term personal growth.

Introduction: Positive outcomes in the aftermath of childbirth have increasingly been studied in the last decade. However, most of the studies concentrate on short-term outcomes. The current study examined the perceived personal growth of mothers four years after childbirth, investigating the contribution of the event characteristics (full-term/pre-term birth), internal resources (optimism, self-esteem) and personal growth as measured one year after the birth. Methods: Mothers (n=259) participated in the study by completing a set of self-report questionnaires one and four years following the b

A Longitudinal Examination of Hope and Optimism and Their Role in Type 1 Diabetes in Youths.

OBJECTIVES: To test the longitudinal associations between hope and optimism and health outcomes (i.e., HbA1c and self-monitored blood glucose [SMBG]) among youths with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) over a 6-month period. METHODS: A total of 110 participants (aged 10-16 years) completed study measures at Time 1, and 81 completed measures at Time 2. Analyses examined hope and optimism as predictors of change in health outcomes, and examined SMBG as a mediator of the relationship between hope and optimism, and HbA1c. RESULTS: Change in hope, but not optimism, was associated with change in SMB

Effects of rumination and optimism on the relationship between psychological distress and non-suicidal self-injury.

In recent years, increasing concern regarding non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents has prompted investigation of factors that may prevent this behavior. This study examined the relationship between psychological distress and NSSI in a community sample of adolescents, and the moderating effect of both optimism and rumination on this association. Two thousand five hundred seventy-two participants (12-18 years) completed self-report questionnaires assessing psychological distress, cognitive, and emotional characteristics, and NSSI history. Ten percent of the sample reported a history

PTSD, optimism, and life satisfaction during early SUD treatment among native Hawaiian and Pacific islander patients.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and resilience change rapidly early in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. However, these processes have not been characterized among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) patients, despite disproportionate trauma exposure and treatment barriers. Examining how posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, optimism, and quality of life satisfaction fluctuate during early treatment may help improve care. This study investigated within- and between-person associations among PTSD, optimism, and life satisfaction over the first month of treatment. METHODS: From

Optimism and the time-stable component of self-rated health: A threshold-specific latent growth analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Self-rated health (SRH) is a widely used measure of health, but debate persists over how its subjective component should be interpreted. This study tests whether dispositional optimism reflects a time-stable source of subjectivity in SRH or an adaptive evaluative filter through which changing health is interpreted. DESIGN: Using longitudinal data from the US Health and Retirement Study, 16,902 adults aged 50+ were analysed with threshold-specific latent growth curve models. SRH was modelled across four positive-health thresholds: 'Excellent,' 'Very Good+,' 'Good+' and 'Fair+.' Sta

Caregiver emotional support, optimism, and trauma symptoms among adolescents waiting for treatment after disclosing sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: It is common for adolescents who recently disclosed sexual abuse to report significant levels of trauma symptoms. Many experience improvement in these symptoms shortly thereafter, even without formal intervention, but little is known about why this happens. This study examines whether adolescent perceptions of caregiver emotional support and adolescent optimism relate to trauma symptoms among adolescents who are on a wait-list for treatment after having disclosed sexual abuse. METHOD: Participants were 223 adolescents who experienced sexual abuse (98% female; Mage = 13.49 years; 52

Optimism moderates the relationship between inflammatory polygenic risk and major depressive disorder in U.S. Military veterans.

OBJECTIVES: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability, and chronic inflammation is a contributing factor to its onset and progression. This study examined the relationship between genetic predisposition to inflammation and MDD risk in a nationally representative sample of U.S. military veterans, as well as psychosocial moderators of this association. METHODS: A composite polygenic risk score (PRS) for inflammatory biomarkers was derived from the UK Biobank and examined in relation to a positive MDD screen in 1,660 European-American veterans. The analysis adjusted for kn

Changes in optimism and subsequent health and wellbeing outcomes in older adults: an outcome-wide analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether changes in optimism in older adulthood are associated with subsequent health and wellbeing outcomes. METHOD: Longitudinal data are from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative sample of U.S. older adults (N = 12,998, 2006/2008 to 2014/2016 waves). To evaluate changes in optimism, we examined optimism assessed in 2010/2012 and adjusted for optimism assessed 4 years earlier in 2006/2008 in regression models, which, under the specified statistical models, is equivalent to assessing changes in optimism during the 4-year interval. We exa

Daytime Sleepiness and Dispositional Optimism Are Related to Awake Bruxism Among Patients With Painful Temporomandibular Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Awake bruxism (AB) is a multifactorial condition that has been linked to several physiological and psychological factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association between AB-related behaviours, daytime sleepiness, and dispositional optimism. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). Participants with pain-related temporomandibular disorders (TMD) that worsened with function were included. The survey comprised subjective assessment of the frequency of AB-related oral behaviours (items adopted from

Posttraumatic stress, depression, and subjective social status: Potential moderating effects of optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy.

Objective: To investigate how optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy may potentially moderate the relationships between subjective social status (SSS) and posttraumatic stress (PTSS) and depression symptom severity among trauma-exposed undergraduate students. Participants: 382 undergraduate students reported experiencing at least one traumatic event. Methods: Participants completed online measures assessing trauma history, SSS, PTSS, and depression symptoms, and potential psychological resources of optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy. Results: Low SSS predicted more severe depression symp

The para-hippocampal-medial frontal gyrus functional connectivity mediates the relationship between dispositional optimism and procrastination.

Procrastination is a prevalent phenomenon throughout the world, which can lead to worse consequences across life domains, such as academic performance, mental health, and even public policy. Despite the evidence for the association between dispositional optimism and procrastination, the neural mechanisms underlying this link remain unexplored. To address this issue, we employed voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) methods to explore the underlying links between dispositional optimism and procrastination in a large sample (N = 408). The self-report resu

Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy in the management of solitary rectal ulcer syndrome: a cause for optimism?

AIM: The treatment of solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is notoriously difficult. Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVMR) is a nonresectional technique for patients with full thickness external rectal prolapse and internal prolapse with obstructed defaecation syndrome (ODS), features associated in the pathogenesis of SRUS. Our aim was to assess the short- and long-term efficacy of LVMR in treating SRUS. METHOD: Forty-eight patients with SRUS who underwent LVMR over a 15-year period (December 1996 to July 2012) were identified from a prospectively maintained electronic database. RESULT
