Stage-Dependent Metabolic Responses to Oral Nutritional Supplementation in Cancer Cachexia: A Single-Arm Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by involuntary weight loss and muscle wasting, leading to impaired quality of life and poor clinical outcomes. Although oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are recommended to support inadequate oral intake during chemotherapy, their effects on underlying metabolic alterations and gut microbiome composition, particularly across different stages of cachexia remain unclear. This single-arm pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and metabolic effects of an 8-week ONS intervention in patients with cancer cachexi

Early Postoperative Complications of One-Stage Substitution Urethroplasty with Oral Mucosa Graft: A Monocentric Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: We report early postoperative complications (PCs) (≤90 days) of one-stage oral mucosa graft (OMG) urethroplasty in treatment of acquired anterior urethral strictures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, we evaluated 530 males who underwent one-stage substitution urethroplasty (SU) between September 1996 and October 2020. Medical records were reviewed to identify and classify early PCs based on the Clavien-Dindo classification (CDC). We subdivided the PCs into three groups with different kinds of complications which allowed us a more detailed analysis concerning general surgical

Short Course of Oral Antibiotic Treatment After Two-Stage Exchange Arthroplasty Appears to Decrease Early Reinfection.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence has suggested a benefit to extended postoperative prophylactic oral antibiotics after two-stage exchange arthroplasty for treatment of periprosthetic joint infections. We sought to determine reinfection rates with and without a short course of oral antibiotics after two-stage exchange procedures. METHODS: A retrospective review identified patients undergoing two-stage exchange arthroplasty for periprosthetic joint infection of the hip or knee. Patients were excluded if they failed a prior two-stage exchange, had positive cultures at reimplantation, prolonged intrav

Squamous cell carcinoma cervix stage IIIB metastatic to oral cavity: A case report and literature review.

Metastatic cervical cancers to the oral cavity are uncommon. These metastases most commonly present as lesions of the jaw bones and the mandible. A 57-year-old female patient complained of mass lesion in her oral cavity after definitive treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix stage IIIB. On examination a swelling of 3cm in size was found on the left side of buccal vestibule adjacent to the lower canine tooth. Wide local excision was performed, and histopathology results showed a squamous cell carcinoma of moderate differentiation. She was continued with segmental mandibulectomy, su

[Reactivation of patch-stage mycosis fungoides caused by oral administration of dialyzable leukocyte extract. Case report].

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides is a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. The patch stage is limited to the skin and may spontaneously involute or progress, spreading to peripheral blood, lymph nodes and viscera. CASE REPORT: 64 year-old female with a 6-year history of dermatosis with scaly, poorly delimited and pruritic plaques on the chest and extremities. She had received oral steroids and antihistamines, with transient partial remissions been experienced. Skin biopsy revealed Pautrier's microabscesses, which are pathognomonic of mycosis fungoides. CCR4 Expression Is Associated With Poor Prognosis in Patients With Early Stage (pN0) Oral Tongue Cancer.

PURPOSE: Chemokine receptors are involved in tumor metastasis and can predict poor prognosis; however, the expression and clinicopathologic relevance of chemokine receptors in early-stage cancer remain largely unknown. This study measured the association between chemokine (C-C motif) receptor-4 (CCR4) expression and prognosis in patients with histologically node-negative (pN0) oral tongue cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of CCR4 expression data from a consecutive case series of patients with pN0 oral cancer tongue was conducted. The expression of CCR4 by immunohistochem

Single-stage reconstruction of large defect of oral commissure and lips by submental artery island flap.

Large defect of the lip and buccal mucosa created due to wide resection of the cancer is difficult to reconstruct and always a challenge. Such defects are complex as there is loss of outer skin, muscle, soft tissue, and inner mucosal lining. We report the use of submental artery island flap (SAIF) in the reconstruction of a large defect of oral commissure and buccal mucosa in a 70-year-old female with the diagnosis of verrucous carcinoma. The final outcome was optimal in terms of cosmetic and functional results. We obtained good lip seal without any problem in speech and swallowing. SAIF is an

Oral Radiographic Evidence of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in an End-Stage Renal Failure Patient: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The authors report a case of a 42-year-old woman with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) undergoing dialysis therapy with the relative loss of tooth root lamina dura and several mandibular radiolucencies. Secondary hyperparathyroidism related to End Stage Renal Disease may result in the loss of bone density and radiolucent lesions, which has been previously described as Brown tumor. Findings significant for hyperparathyroidism may befound on routine dental imaging. RESULTS: The patient was evaluated, and treatment was initiated for her dental conditions. She is at present still on the

What patients consider important: temporal variations by early and late stage oral, oropharyngeal and laryngeal subsites.

Functional outcomes are of high priority to cancer patients and are relevant when considering treatment strategies. This study aimed to collate and analyse importance rankings of UW-QOL over time for patients treated with curative intent for primary head and neck squamous cell carcinoma between 2000 and 2010, and to compare early and late stage oral, oropharyngeal and laryngeal subsites. There were 1614 patients comprising oral cavity 47% (751), oropharyngeal 24% (382), laryngeal 20% (320) and other HNC locations 10% (161). Items of importance remained relatively stable within clinical groups

Photodynamic therapy of early stage oral cavity and oropharynx neoplasms: an outcome analysis of 170 patients.

The indications of photodynamic therapy (PDT) of oral cavity and oropharynx neoplasms are not well defined. The main reason is that the success rates are not well established. The current paper analyzes our institutional experience of early stage oral cavity and oropharynx neoplasms (Tis-T2) to identify the success rates for each subgroup according to T stage, primary or non-primary treatment and subsites. In total, 170 patients with 226 lesions are treated with PDT. From these lesions, 95 are primary neoplasms, 131 were non-primaries (recurrences and multiple primaries). The overall response

Comparative studies of experimental oral inoculation of pigs with Ascaris suum eggs or third stage larvae.

This experimental study was designed to compare the acquired resistance in pigs to Ascaris suum eggs following 4-weekly oral immunizations with either 200 A. suum infective eggs or 50 A. suum third stage larvae (L3). The two immunized groups (n = 7) together with an unimmunized control group (n = 7) of pigs were challenged orally with 50 infective A. suum eggs per kilogram bodyweight on day 19 after the last immunization. Seven days post-challenge the group immunized with eggs showed signs of resistance as evidenced by reduced lung larval counts compared with the challenge control group. Such

Side-effects of oral misoprostol in the third stage of labour--a randomised placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Misoprostol, an inexpensive, stable, orally active prostaglandin analogue, has been suggested for use in the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage. Potential side-effects, however, need to be quantified. OBJECTIVE: To compare the rate of postpartum shivering and pyrexia following oral misoprostol 600 micrograms and placebo. DESIGN: A double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Women in labour were randomly allocated to receive either misoprostol 600 micrograms orally or placebo after delivery. Conventional oxytocics were given immediately if blood loss was thought to be more than usual

Combination therapy protocol for stage III or IV carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx and hypopharynx.

Combined therapy programs have improved recurrent and nodal metastatic rates but have not controlled distant metastases. A pilot study undertaken at Ohio State University evaluated the feasibility of adding chemotherapy to a combined modality regimen. The first phase determined that the toxicity of a four-drug combination chemotherapy yielded a favorable risk/benefit ratio and justified its inclusion in a protocol for untreated cancers. The second phase evaluated chemotherapy followed by surgery and postoperative irradiaation for untreated Stage III and IV epidermoid carcinoma of the oral cavi

Clinical T staging accuracy and its prognostic relevance in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Accurate clinical T-staging is essential for guiding surgical management in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), particularly when determining treatment escalation or de-escalation. This study evaluated its diagnostic accuracy and impact on potential over- and undertreatment. This retrospective single-center study included patients with histologically confirmed OSCC who underwent primary surgical resection with negative margins between 2012 and 2022. Clinical T-staging based on preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography and clinical examination was compared with pathological staging. T

A systematic review of staging systems for oral submucous fibrosis: evolution, variations, and clinical implications.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple clinical, functional, and histopathological staging frameworks for OSMF have been described in the literature. Staging helps clinicians assess prognosis, tailor interventions, and monitor progression. The aim of the study is to collect and analyze the various staging systems for OSMF reported in the literature to date and to identify how these systems have evolved over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search using multiple electronic databases and gray literature was undertaken to synthesize evidence on existing staging systems. Two reviewers independently p
