Preferences for clinical trial participation among people who use drugs in rural Oregon and Appalachian Ohio.

BACKGROUND: Rural communities in the United States face significant challenges in participating in clinical trials, despite being heavily impacted by opioid and injection drug use epidemics. Barriers such as transportation, stigma, and limited resources often deter rural people who use drugs (PWUD) from engaging in research. Discrete choice experiments (DCEs) can help identify trial design features that support participation by eliciting participant preferences. METHODS: We selected DCE attributes and attribute levels through literature review and qualitative interviews. Peer-based Retention

One-Year Association of Drug Possession Law Change With Fatal Drug Overdose in Oregon and Washington.

IMPORTANCE: Two states modified laws to remove or substantially reduce criminal penalties for any drug possession. The hypothesis was that removing criminal penalties for drug possession may reduce fatal drug overdoses due to reduced incarceration and increased calls for help at the scene of an overdose. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether decriminalization of drug possession in Oregon and Washington was associated with changes in either direction in fatal drug overdose rates. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used a synthetic control method approach to examine whether there we

Disease Surveillance of California Ground Squirrels ( Spermophilus beecheyi ) in a Drive-through Zoo in Oregon, USA.

Rodents and other small wild mammals are often considered to be pests and vectors for disease in zoos that house small populations of valuable threatened and endangered animals. In 2005, three nonhuman primates at a drive-through zoo in Oregon, US, acquired tularemia from an unknown source. Due to an abundance of California ground squirrels ( Spermophilus beecheyi ) on zoo grounds, we instituted serosurveillance of this species from July through September 2008 to determine the prevalence of antibodies against pathogens considered to be potentially transmissible to collection animals. Serologic

Use of claims data to estimate annual cervical cancer screening percentages in Portland metropolitan area, Oregon.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine should reduce cervical dysplasia before cervical cancer. However, dysplasia diagnosis is screening-dependent. Accurate screening estimates are needed. PURPOSE: To estimate the percentage of women in a geographic population that has had cervical cancer screening. METHODS: We analyzed claims data for (Papanicolau) Pap tests from 2008-2012 to estimate the percentage of insured women aged 18-39 years screened. We estimated screening in uninsured women by dividing the percentage of insured Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey respondents report

Communitywide cryptosporidiosis outbreak associated with a surface water-supplied municipal water system--Baker City, Oregon, 2013.

Cryptosporidium, a parasite known to cause large drinking and recreational water outbreaks, is tolerant of chlorine concentrations used for drinking water treatment. Human laboratory-based surveillance for enteric pathogens detected a cryptosporidiosis outbreak in Baker City, Oregon during July 2013 associated with municipal drinking water. Objectives of the investigation were to confirm the outbreak source and assess outbreak extent. The watershed was inspected and city water was tested for contamination. To determine the community attack rate, a standardized questionnaire was administered to

Acute encephalopathy and seizure rates in children under age two years in Oregon and Washington state.

A surveillance network was established in Oregon and Washington state to identify cases of certain neurologic illnesses during a one-year period (August 1, 1987 to July 31, 1988) among children 1-24 months of age. Reported here are the observed case occurrence rates and findings from capture-recapture analyses used to predict rates that would have been observed had ascertainment been complete. The network consisted of a hospital component involving 98% of all eligible facilities, a provider component involving 93% of all eligible pediatricians and neurologists, and a research staff component o

Cryptosporidium infection in Oregon public health clinic patients 1985-88: the value of statewide laboratory surveillance.

To evaluate the utility of statewide laboratory Cryptosporidium surveillance, we screened stools from all 5,256 patients evaluated at local health departments for parasitic disease from January 1985 through June 1988. Fifty-seven patients (1.1 percent) were found to have Cryptosporidium. Seasonal peaks in positivity were observed in the spring, summer, and early autumn months. In children, younger age was associated with higher positivity rate of cryptosporidiosis. As a result of these surveillance efforts, Oregon's first known outbreak of cryptosporidiosis was detected and investigated during

Isolation of a spotted fever group rickettsia from the Pacific Coast tick, Ixodes pacificus, in Oregon.

A rickettsia of the spotted fever group was isolated on three occasions from Ixodes pacificus in western Oregon. These isolations, and additional evidence furnished by complement fixation tests on guinea pigs inoculated with other Oregon ticks of this species, indicate that the association of this rickettsia with the Pacific Coast tick may be widespread. This is the first isolation of a spotted fever group rickettsia from I. pacificus. Because the Oregon isolates are mildly virulent for guinea pigs they resemble the Western U and Rickettsia montana strains of rickettsiae. However, preliminary

The Association between Changes in Built Environment and Changes in Walking among Older Women in Portland, Oregon.

Some cross-sectional evidence suggests that the objectively measured built environment can encourage walking among older adults. We examined the associations between objectively measured built environment with change in self-reported walking among older women by using data from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF). We evaluated the longitudinal associations between built environment characteristics and walking among 1253 older women (median age = 71 years) in Portland, Oregon using generalized estimating equation models. Built environment characteristics included baseline values and longi
