National Institutes of Health (NIH) director Elias Zerhouni is pushing hard for innovation and the risk taking required to make major leaps in medicine. Fully attuned to cutting-edge work that crosses disciplines, he cites nanotechnology, clinical databases designed to answer research questions, systems biology, and an openness to radical ideas among his top priorities. The NIH director's job, he says, "is to have a vision." This requires leveraging NIH funding so that money is spent more wisely and has a cumulative effect on population health. Knowledge can be extracted from science, and heal

INTRODUCTION: HOPtimise is an organisational innovation in paediatric oncology in the province of Québec (Canada) destined to improve and reinforce best nursing practices through digital training using a serious game and create dashboards focused on indicators sensitive to the quality of care. This complex intervention is led by a quality improvement committee, a joint committee of user partners (former patients and family members) and healthcare providers. The present study aims to demonstrate how innovation and training are co-created with multiple stakeholders. The involvement of patients a

The Brandenburg Medical School "Theodor Fontane" (MHB) was founded in 2014 by municipal and non-profit institutions in Bernau, Brandenburg an der Havel and Neuruppin to train more physicians for the non-metropolitan region of Brandenburg. Since the 2015 summer term, 48 medical students have been enrolled each year, accepted through the university's own selection process in which the score on the German school-leaving exam (Abitur) and time spent on the waiting list play subordinate roles. Tuition fees can be partially financed through scholarship agreements with regional hospitals if the appli

When a new work group forms, people often make snap judgments about who is qualified to lead. If the players don't already know one another, they tend to afford status to teammates on the basis of factors such as age, gender, race, attractiveness, and rank. These are characteristics beyond your control, but they don't necessarily predetermine the influence you can have on a group. Anyone, the authors say, can achieve higher status and more influence by getting in the right mind-set before engaging with new teammates. There are three psychological states that can increase the optimism, confiden

The CLER model is presented to nursing professionals as a model for planning and implementing change in interpersonal, institutional and cultural settings. It is useful for generating other models by modeling reality as actually encountered by change agents and adopters. The CLER model is related philosophically to systems thinking (that there is interdependence among social entities), dialectical thinking (that there is mutual shaping among social processes) and constructivist thinking (that human beings take part in creating their own reality).

BACKGROUND: Patient-centred care based on needs has been gaining momentum in health policy and the workforce. This creates new demand for interprofessional teams and redefining roles and tasks of professionals, yet little is known on how to implement new health policies more effectively. Our aim was to analyse the role and capacity of health professions in driving organisational change in interprofessional working and patient-centred care.
METHODS: A case study of the introduction of interprofessional, early discharge teams in stroke rehabilitation in Denmark was conducted with focus on day-t

This article outlines how one academic medical center's nursing service has developed programs to improve patient safety and quality outcomes through the use of the Magnet Re-Designation Accreditation Process(R) and a shared governance model. Successful programs have been implemented across the continuum of care. These programs include educational initiatives that increased both the number of nurses with BSN degrees and specialty certifications and also the number of patient-focused initiatives, such as a reduction in central line infection rates, an increase in hand-washing compliance, and a

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate whether profession and organization is associated with patient safety culture and organizational readiness for change prior to implementing a care process aimed at improving communication and teamwork during childbirth. METHODS: A cross-sectional design using a web-based survey sent to midwives, physicians and nurse assistants at seven labor wards in Sweden. The Hospital Survey On Patient Safety (HSOPS 2.0) covering ten dimensions of patient safety culture and the short version of the Swedish Organizational Readiness for Change scale (ORC-SW

In 2011, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) began implementing consistent staff assignment in its nursing homes (called Community Living Centers or CLCs). Consistent assignment, a cornerstone of culture change, minimizes the number of staff who provide a resident's care. The present research assessed the level and stability of consistent assignment in units within VHA CLCs and identified unit characteristics related to implementation of this staff assignment model. Schedulers in 185 of 335 organizational units that make up VHA CLCs completed a Staffing Practices Survey. For the month pri

The literature is relatively silent on how managers should deal with a reduction in force (RIF). One difficulty is dealing with the "surviving" staff and maintaining credibility. It is important to assess the organizational climate and plan and carry out a forum for the remaining staff. It is especially important to consider the psychologic effects of staff reduction, which include a sense of loss of control, hostility, and a tendency to want to find fault or blame. Lack of attention to these matters can lead to a RIF that compromises the work effectiveness of the organization by reducing the

BACKGROUND: The concept of nursing innovation remains inconsistently defined across the literature. This conceptual ambiguity impedes the advancement of nursing innovation scholarship.
PURPOSE: To advance conceptual clarity of nursing innovation within global health ecosystems as a heuristic to support the knowledge base of the nursing discipline.
METHODS: The Innovation in NurSIng for Global Health ecosystems Transformation (INSIGHT) study applies Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis. The search was performed in February 2025 across five databases, supplemented by hand-searching of refere

Companies today increasingly rely on teams that span many industries for radical innovation, especially to solve "wicked problems." So leaders have to understand how to promote collaboration when roles are uncertain, goals are shifting, expertise and organizational cultures are varied, and participants have clashing or even antagonistic perspectives. HBS professor Amy Edmondson has studied more than a dozen cross-industry innovation projects, among them the creation of a new city, a mango supply-chain transformation, and the design and construction of leading-edge buildings. She has identified

Innovation and innovativeness frameworks are crucial for guiding progress, yet often remain fragmented, failing to connect individual behaviors, organizational ecosystems, and systemic goals, and frequently overlooking well-being. This study addresses these limitations through a large-scale bibliometric analysis of 49,398 innovation and 1,346 innovativeness publications. We employed a mixed-methods approach, combining citation network clustering with a qualitative content analysis of seminal works to map the field's evolutionary trajectory. Our analysis confirms a structural divide: innovation

BACKGROUND: Changes in patterns of drug use and population needs necessitate the adoption of new technologies. Despite high failure rates in adopting new technologies acquired in training, little is known about the process that can support successful change. This study explores the impact that staff and service characteristics have on the process of training adoption in Irish opiate substitution therapy services, with a specific focus on the concept of organizational readiness to change.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a convenience sample of 132 staff members across 12 ser

The World Health Organization (WHO) was born after the devastation of World War II, as a normative agency endowed with unprecedented constitutional powers. But even as it has achieved stunning successes, such as the eradication of smallpox, it has failed to live up to the exalted expectations of the postwar health and human rights movement - exemplified most recently by its inadequate response to the Ebola epidemic. Our aim is to offer innovative ideas for restoring the Organization to its leadership position by exercising its normative authority, even as it faces a crowded and often chaotic g
