The effects of harassment severity and organizational behavior on damage awards in a hostile work environment sexual harassment case.

Community members reporting for jury duty (N = 128) read a sexual harassment trial summary in which harassment severity and the organization's sexual harassment policy and response were manipulated. Jurors who read the severe harassment scenario were more likely to agree that the plaintiff had suffered and should be compensated for her suffering and that the organization should be punished than were jurors who read the mild harassment scenario. When the organization had and enforced a sexual harassment policy, jurors believed that the plaintiff had suffered little and the organization should n

The influence of employee health and safety policies on the value of the organization.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the impact of Health and Safety (H&S) policies on the valuation of over 2,000 U.S. organizations, where results indicate the existence of a significant positive value elevation as a result of successful H&S Employee Policies implementation, with evidence of moderate variation partly attributed to the influence of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). RESULTS: We find that the observed impact of H&S policies on organization value is not an implicit reaction to COVID-19 pandemic policy implementation, but a consistent trend over a prolonged

"We're Checking a Box and, You Know, Covering Our Own": Health Professionals' Descriptions of Hospital-Policy Making Regarding Child Welfare Reporting Related to Birthing People's Drug Use.

BACKGROUND: Hospital policies play a role in healthcare providers' decision-making about reporting birthing people who use drugs to child welfare. This study sought to understand how these specific hospital policies are made. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals involved in developing or revising hospital policies related to child welfare reporting for birthing people who use drugs. The interview guide was informed by an implementation science framework and focused on participants' experiences developing or revising these policies. We coded transcript

Invisible patients: Reframing women informal caregivers' access to healthcare and support services as a gendered health systems issue.

Women informal caregivers are overrepresented in unpaid and informal caregiving roles yet remain underrecognized as patients and policy subjects within health and social care systems. Despite extensive evidence that caregiving affects women's own health and healthcare engagement, their access barriers are frequently attributed to individual help-seeking behaviors rather than to systemic and gendered conditions. This conceptual paper argues that women informal caregivers' access to healthcare and support services should be understood as a gendered health systems issue shaped by sociocultural ex

When do fair procedures not matter? A test of the identity violation effect.

Considerable research has demonstrated that fair procedures help improve reactions to decisions, a phenomenon known as the fair process effect. However, in the present research, the authors identify when and why objectively fair procedures (i.e., receiving voice) may not always improve justice perceptions. Findings from 2 studies (Ns = 108 and 277) yield support for the proposed identity violation effect, which posits that when an outcome violates a central aspect of one's self (i.e., personal and/or social identity), objectively fair procedures do not improve procedural and distributive justi

Leveling of triggers: a comprehensive summative content analysis of factors contributing to physical violence in emergency medical services.

BACKGROUND: The literature has identified numerous factors that contribute to workplace violence, ranging from environmental stressors to interpersonal conflict. However, a gap remains in our understanding of the specific factors associated with physical violence, particularly concerning its frequency and perceived significance. METHODS: A summative content analysis was conducted via the electronic survey platform Porsline in Iran for data collection. In April 2024, EMTs working in urban, road, and air bases in western Iran participated in the study. In total, 358 EMTs were selected via conve

Implementation of a health care policy: an analysis of barriers and facilitators to practice change.

BACKGROUND: Governments often create policies that rely on implementation by arms length organizations and require practice changes on the part of different segments of the health care system without understanding the differences in and complexities of these agencies. In 2000, in response to publicity about the shortening length of postpartum hospital stay, the Ontario government created a universal program offering up to a 60-hour postpartum stay and a public health follow-up to mothers and newborn infants. The purpose of this paper is to examine how a health policy initiative was implemented

Alternative systems in Malaysian drug rehabilitation: organization and control in comparative perspective.

This paper examines four drug rehabilitation systems in Malaysia from an organizational perspective. It focuses on authority structures in rehabilitation centres and their impact on rehabilitees' identities. The findings show that there are important differences between government-run and private centres in terms of administration and approach to therapy. Some policy implications are derived from a comparison of these systems.

From compliance to participation in US methadone maintenance treatment: Realizing the promise of person-centered services for people who use opioids.

Internationally, compliance with program rules and the earning of privileges is common to cultural understandings of treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). One long standing and striking example of such a culture is methadone maintenance treatment within US opioid treatment programs. This compliance-based model, established by a mix of regulation and culture, has shaped decades of clinical practice and policy within the US-and it is precisely what new federal rules in the US now aim to challenge. The opportunity now is to prioritize programs that expand or embed meaningful participation amon

From evidence to action: Why employers must address prolonged sitting in modern workplaces.

The global workforce has undergone substantial transformation in recent decades, with technological advances, digitalization, remote working, and expanding administrative demands contributing to an increase in sedentary occupations. As a result, prolonged sitting has become a routine feature of working life for many office-based employees across diverse sectors. Although the health risks associated with sedentary behavior are well established, prolonged occupational sitting remains relatively overlooked within workplace health policy and public health practice. Evidence consistently links exte

A Policy for the Delivery of Essential Medicines to Vulnerable Population in Argentina: A Case Study of the REMEDIAR Program.

The REMEDIAR Program, established during Argentina's 2001-2002 crisis, provides free essential medicines to the uninsured population through direct delivery to more than 8,000 primary healthcare centers. Over two decades, the program has alternated between two financing models: international concessional loans from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and national treasury funding. Using the Nexus Working Group framework linking public financial management to supply chain performance, this longitudinal single-case study (2002-2024) examines how each financing model shaped the program's fu

Surgical Instrument Reprocessing in Resource-Constrained Countries: A Scoping Review of Existing Methods, Policies, and Barriers.

BACKGROUND: Surgical infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Inadequately reprocessed surgical instruments can be a vector for pathogens. Little has been published on the current state of surgical instrument reprocessing in LMICs. METHODS: We performed a scoping review of English-language articles in PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases describing current methods, policies, and barriers to surgical instrument reprocessing in LMICs. We conducted qualitative analysis of all studies to categorize existing practices and

Identifying and assessing the substance-exposed infant.

As the rate of opioid prescription grows, so does fetal exposure to opioids during pregnancy. With increasing fetal exposure to both prescription and nonprescription drugs, there has been a concurrent increase in identification of Neonatal Withdrawal Syndrome (NWS) and adaptation difficulties after birth. In addition, extended use of opioids, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines in neonatal intensive care has resulted in iatrogenic withdrawal syndromes. There is a lack of evidence to support the use of any one specific evaluation strategy to identify NWS. Clinicians caring for infants must use a

Upstream nurse-community partnership strategies to improve social determinants of health: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are vital in improving the social determinants of health (SDOH) through community partnerships. While individual-level SDOH interventions are well studied, less is known about nursing strategies that support systemic, community-based change. PURPOSE: To examine the scope, characteristics, and gaps in the literature on nurse-community partnership strategies to address SDOH. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Academic Search Premier, and SocINDEX. The search identified 20 records describing nursing strategies implemented with community part

Effective Communication through Narrative.

Communication is foundational to clinical and leadership excellence. In patient care, listening, empathy, and trust prevent errors. In complex health systems, leaders who move beyond data transmission, toward creating a cohesive narrative, help teams unite around purpose. Drawing on cognitive science and organizational theory, this article positions storytelling as a core leadership tool that connects metrics to lived experience, mobilizes action, and humanizes policy.
