Covert spatial attention is functionally intact in amblyopic human adults.

Certain abnormalities in behavioral performance and neural signaling have been attributed to a deficit of visual attention in amblyopia, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a diverse array of visual deficits following abnormal binocular childhood experience. Critically, most have inferred attention's role in their task without explicitly manipulating and measuring its effects against a baseline condition. Here, we directly investigate whether human amblyopic adults benefit from covert spatial attention-the selective processing of visual information in the absence of eye movements-to

A desert ant's memory of recent visual experience and the control of route guidance.

Insects such as desert ants learn stereotyped visual routes between their nests and reliable food sites. Studies here reveal an important control element for ensuring that the route memories are used appropriately. They find that visual route memories can be disengaged, so that they do not provide guidance, even when all appropriate visual cues are present and when there are no competing guidance cues. Ants were trained along a simple route dominated by a single isolated landmark. If returning ants were caught just before entering the nest and replaced at the feeder, then they often interrupte

Assessing spatial learning and memory in rodents.

Maneuvering safely through the environment is central to survival of almost all species. The ability to do this depends on learning and remembering locations. This capacity is encoded in the brain by two systems: one using cues outside the organism (distal cues), allocentric navigation, and one using self-movement, internal cues and nearby proximal cues, egocentric navigation. Allocentric navigation involves the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and surrounding structures; in humans this system encodes allocentric, semantic, and episodic memory. This form of memory is assessed in laboratory anim

Disruption of spatial task performance in anorexia nervosa.

In anorexia nervosa (AN), body distortions have been associated with parietal cortex (PC) dysfunction. The PC is the anatomical substrate for a supramodal reference framework involved in spatial orientation constancy. Here, we sought to evaluate spatial orientation constancy and the perception of body orientation in AN patients. In the present study, we investigated the effect of passive lateral body inclination on the visual and tactile subjective vertical (SV) and body Z-axis in 25 AN patients and 25 healthy controls. Subjects performed visual- and tactile-spatial judgments of axis orientati

The effect of auditory cues on heading direction during stepping-in-place in healthy adults with experimentally induced vestibular asymmetry.

Visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive cues are known to influence the orientation of our body in space. Auditory cues also influence spatial orientation, as recent studies shown they affect static postural balance. However, the influence of auditory stimulation on dynamic postural balance tasks, such as heading direction during vestibular perturbation, remains understudied. To examine the influence of auditory cues on heading direction during a stepping-in-place task with and without galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). Twenty young healthy participants performed a stepping-in-place task, b

Object correspondence in audition echoes vision: Not only spatiotemporal but also feature information influences auditory apparent motion.

A crucial ability of our cognition is the perception of objects and their motions. We can perceive objects as moving by connecting them across space and time. This is possible even when the objects are not present continuously, as in the case of apparent motion displays like the Ternus display, consisting of two sets of stimuli, shifted to the left or right, separated by a variable inter-stimulus interval (ISI). This is an ambiguous display, which can be perceived as both stimuli moving uniformly to the right (group motion) or one stimulus moving across the stationary center stimulus (element

Ultra high-field (7 T) multi-resolution fMRI data for orientation decoding in visual cortex.

Multivariate pattern classification methods have been successfully applied to decode orientation of visual grating stimuli from BOLD fMRI activity recorded in human visual cortex (Kamitani and Tong, 2005; Haynes and Rees, 2005) [12], [10]. Though there has been extensive research investigating the true spatial scale of the orientation specific signals (Op de Beeck, 2010; Swisher et al., 2010; Alink et al., 2013; Freeman et al., 2011, 2013) [2], [15], [1], [4], [5], it remained inconclusive what spatial acquisition resolution is required, or is optimal, for decoding analyses. The research artic

Looking for the compass in a case of developmental topographical disorientation: a behavioral and neuroimaging study.

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) is the presence of navigational deficits in the context of normal intellectual ability and in the absence of any perinatal, neurological, or psychiatric disorder. As only three cases of DTD have been fully described thus far, we are still unable to draw definitive conclusions about its nature and relationship with other visuospatial competencies, such as mental rotation. The case of Mr. L.A., a 38-year-old man with no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders, sheds some light on these open questions. A neuropsychological assessment inclu

Altered orienting of visuospatial attention in patients with vestibular disorders.

The vestibular system, one of the earliest sensory systems in vertebrates, is crucial for encoding head and trunk movements. Research in stroke patients with spatial attention deficits and studies manipulating vestibular signals in healthy individuals suggest that the vestibular system is also involved in orienting visuospatial attention. However, the specific interactions between vestibular and attentional systems and the consequences of vestibular pathologies on attentional functions are still poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of vestibular disorders on the orienti

Anchor objects guide spatial attention during visual search.

Semantic information is used to guide attention during scene-viewing, but how exactly does this occur? We tested the hypothesis that "anchor objects" are a special class of semantic associate essential to efficient target search in naturalistic scenes. Adult participants completed a RSVP search task for a target object preceded by a prime. In Experiment 1a (N = 210), the prime was either a semantic anchor or an unrelated object followed by a target in a congruent or incongruent spatial location relative to the prime. Experiment 1b (N = 157) served as a direct replication of Experiment 1a with

Neurophysiological Measures to Detect Spatial Disorientation.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining spatial orientation in flight remains a critical aspect of aviation safety. Monitoring an aviator's neurophysiological patterns may provide insight and opportunity to mitigate loss of spatial orientation. However, few studies have examined the utility of such measures. The purpose of the current study was to conduct a scoping review to document the research activities that have examined neurophysiological measures in relation to spatial orientation. METHODS: Four databases were searched for literature using neurophysiological measures in studies assessing disorientat

Pre-Navigation via Interactive Audio Tactile Maps to Promote the Wellbeing of Visually Impaired People.

BACKGROUND: Pre-navigational tools can assist visually impaired people when navigating unfamiliar environments. Assistive technology products (eg tactile maps or auditory simulations) can stimulate cognitive mapping processes to provide navigational assistance in these people. OBJECTIVES: We compared how well blind and visually impaired people could learn a map presented via a tablet computer auditory tactile map (ATM) in contrast to a conventional tactile map accompanied by a text description objectives. METHODS: Performance was assessed with a multiple choice test that quizzed participants

Anosmia impairs homing orientation but not foraging behaviour in free-ranging shearwaters.

Shearwaters deprived of their olfactory sense before being displaced to distant sites have impaired homing ability but it is unknown what the role of olfaction is when birds navigate freely without their sense of smell. Furthermore, treatments used to induce anosmia and to disrupt magneto-reception in displacement experiments might influence non-specific factors not directly related to navigation and, as a consequence, the results of displacement experiments can have multiple interpretations. To address this, we GPS-tracked the free-ranging foraging trips of incubating Scopoli's shearwaters wi

Coding of spatial attention priorities and object features in the macaque lateral intraparietal cortex.

Primate posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is known to be involved in controlling spatial attention. Neurons in one part of the PPC, the lateral intraparietal area (LIP), show enhanced responses to objects at attended locations. Although many are selective for object features, such as the orientation of a visual stimulus, it is not clear how LIP circuits integrate feature-selective information when providing attentional feedback about behaviorally relevant locations to the visual cortex. We studied the relationship between object feature and spatial attention properties of LIP cells in two macaqu

Development and organization of the retinal orientation selectivity map.

Orientation or axial selectivity, the property of neurons in the visual system to respond preferentially to certain angles of visual stimuli, plays a pivotal role in our understanding of visual perception and information processing. This computation is performed as early as the retina, and although much work has established the cellular mechanisms of retinal orientation selectivity, how this computation is organized across the retina is unknown. Using a large dataset collected across the mouse retina, we demonstrate functional organization rules of retinal orientation selectivity. First, we id

The relationship between spatial ability self-efficacy and visualization performance: psychometric evidence.

INTRODUCTION: This study adopts a holistic perspective on spatial ability by integrating preservice teachers' self-efficacy perceptions with performance-based approaches. It aims to assess spatial ability self-efficacy and examine differences across selected variables, as well as the relationship between spatial self-efficacy and visualization performance. METHODS: A valid and reliable measurement instrument, the Spatial Ability Self-Efficacy Perception Scale, was developed. The scale consists of 35 items across three factors-spatial visualization, spatial relations, and spatial orientation-a

The Black Hole Approach and The Italian Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation poses a significant hazard to aviators, particularly during low-visibility conditions, such as nocturnal operations or adverse weather scenarios. Visual illusions, exacerbated by the absence of external references, can mislead pilots into incorrect judgments of aircraft orientation, potentially resulting in catastrophic consequences. Perrone's black hole approach theory describes how lateral reference loss distorts perceived approach angles during landing. METHODS: This study systematically assessed black hole approach risk at 119 Italian civil and militar

Virtual Reality Tools for Assessing Unilateral Spatial Neglect: A Novel Opportunity for Data Collection.

Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a syndrome characterized by inattention to or inaction in one side of space and affects between 23-46% of acute stroke survivors. The diagnosis and characterization of these symptoms in individual patients can be challenging and often requires skilled clinical staff. Virtual reality (VR) presents an opportunity to develop novel assessment tools for patients with USN. We aimed to design and build a VR tool to detect and characterize subtle USN symptoms, and to test the tool on subjects treated with inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
