Use of a mouse model for the isolation of Borrelia puertoricensis from soft ticks.

The isolation of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) spirochetes has proven to be a useful tool to understand their distribution in geographic areas where the tick vectors inhabit. However, their isolation and culture are not easy and in general an animal model is needed to achieve this task. Here, argasid ticks were collected from a neighborhood in Ciudad Caucel, and they were identified as Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) puertoricensis. To determine whether these were infected with TBRF bacteria they were fed with healthy mice but only a low burden of spirochetes was observed. An immunosuppressed

[Cutaneous lesions, viral risk and marine bird ticks, a world wide problem; apropos of 1 case with pseudo-zoster lesions].

Dermatological injuries provoked by tick bites deserve more attention. The authors present the clinical observation of a young woman bitten in Brittany by the marine bird associated tick Ornithodoros (A.) maritimus and presenting pseudo-zoster skin lesions. Two other individuals working together with the patient and also bitten by this tick showed symptoms of prurigo, fever and vomiting. Marine bird associated ticks bites may also be responsible for the inoculation of a number of arboviruses along all the coasts of the world including those of islands of Indian Ocean. Pathogenesis of the skin

[A comparative evaluation of the sensitivity of the vector of tick-borne relapsing fever to pesticides by using the standard test paper].

Standard test paper, recommended by the WHO for the assessment of the arthropod sensitivity, was used to assess the sensitivity of Ornithodoros papillipes, the agent of tick-borne relapsing fever, to a number of pesticides widely used in or holding good promise for the agent control. Poor sensitivity of the tick to dieldrin, malathion, propoxur, bendiocarb (less than 40% of the ticks died after 1 h exposure), satisfactory sensitivity to DDT, and permetrin (60% of the ticks died), and very high sensitivity to deltametrin (100% death of the ticks) were revealed. The authors believe that the tick

[Effect of Borrelia--the causative agent of tick-borne relapsing fever--on the vector].

Direct or indirect evidence of pathogenic effect of Borrelia sogdiana, a tick-borne recurrent fever causative agent, on Ornithodoros papillipes is obtained, pointing to a parasitic character of their relations. Differences between infected and uninfected ticks are revealed both under normal life conditions (lower survival, more intensive process of moult), as well as under the effect of poison. Higher sensitivity of infected ticks to DDT was established experimentally; HCCH effect was determined indirectly by counting ticks after treatment. Authors suggest that the effect of causative agent on

Under the scales: Identification of ticks in rehabilitated African pangolins and confiscated scales.

Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals globally. Beyond zoonotic concerns related to coronavirus, pangolins serve as hosts for ectoparasites such as ticks, which can be inadvertently transported through illegal wildlife trade and rehabilitation efforts. The transcontinental trafficking of pangolins and their derivatives poses a potential risk of pathogen spillover affecting humans, wildlife, and livestock. Despite these concerns, data on tick infestations in confiscated African pangolins and scales remain scarce. This study aims to identify tick species associated with confiscated pangolins

Borrelia infection in small mammals in West Africa and its relationship with tick occurrence inside burrows.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a zoonotic disease caused by several Borrelia species transmitted to humans by Ornithodoros tick vectors. In West Africa, Borrelia crocidurae is a common cause of disease in many rural populations. Small mammals act as reservoirs of infection. We report here the results of surveys that investigated the occurrence of B. crocidurae infection in rodents and insectivores from eight countries of West and Central Africa. Animals were identified at the species level and tested for Borrelia either by examination of thick blood film, intra-peritoneal inoculation of

Tick-borne relapsing fever.

Tick-borne relapsing fever is characterized by recurring fevers separated by afebrile periods and is accompanied by nonspecific constitutional symptoms. It occurs after a patient has been bitten by a tick infected with a Borrelia spirochete. The diagnosis of tick-borne relapsing fever requires an accurate characterization of the fever and a thorough medical, social, and travel history of the patient. Findings on physical examination are variable; abdominal pain, vomiting, and altered sensorium are the most common symptoms. Laboratory confirmation of tick-borne relapsing fever is made by detect

The role of gastropods in African swine fever virus ecology.

The spread of the African swine fever virus (ASF virus) genotype ii in the Eurasian region has been very successful and often inexplicable. The virus spreads rapidly and persists in areas with wild boar populations, but areas without feral pig populations are also affected. The virus has shown the ability to survive for a long time in the environment without a population of susceptible hosts, both pigs and Ornithodoros soft ticks. Published data indicated that ASF viruses persist significantly longer in an environment with some freshwater snails (especially Pomacea bridgesii, Tarebia granifera

The epidemiology of tick-borne relapsing fever in the United States.

Each year, many residents of and visitors to endemic regions of the western United States are exposed to the vector of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF), an underrecognized and underreported disease. Through review of report forms and literature review, we identified 450 cases of TBRF acquired in the United States in 11 western states (and in British Columbia by a U.S. resident) from January 1977 to January 2000. Exposure sites were in forested areas, at varying elevations, in mountainous regions (Cascade, Rocky Mountain, San Bernardino, and Sierra Nevada ranges) of the United States and Canad

Circulation of a Meaban-like virus in yellow-legged gulls and seabird ticks in the western Mediterranean basin.

In recent years, a number of zoonotic flaviviruses have emerged worldwide, and wild birds serve as their major reservoirs. Epidemiological surveys of bird populations at various geographical scales can clarify key aspects of the eco-epidemiology of these viruses. In this study, we aimed at exploring the presence of flaviviruses in the western Mediterranean by sampling breeding populations of the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis), a widely distributed, anthropophilic, and abundant seabird species. For 3 years, we sampled eggs from 19 breeding colonies in Spain, France, Algeria, and Tunisia

Sera of 128 small wild mammals (rodents, insectivora) trapped in Northern Morocco in March 1979, were studied for antibody against 15 arboviruses. In inhibition-haemagglutination tests, positive reactions were found against West Nile (0.8%), Tahyna (21 %), Arumowot (14 %) and Sicilian Sandfly fever (9.4 %) viruses. In complement fixation tests, an unique serum from Apodemus sylvaticus was simultaneously positive for Quaranfil virus and for a Kemerovo group virus, Brest/Ar/T222, previously isolated from Ornithodoros (A.) maritimus ticks caught in Morocco. These results are discussed according t

Tick-borne relapsing fever in North America.

Relapsing fever is characterized by recurring episodes of fever and nonspecific symptoms (e.g., headache, myalgia, arthralgia, shaking chills, and abdominal complaints). The illness is caused by an infection from the Borrelia species (spirochetes) that may be acquired through the bite of an infected tick (Ornithodoros species) or contact with the hemolymph of an infected human body louse (Pediculus humanus). In North America, most cases have been acquired in the western United States, southern British Columbia, and few cases have been reported from Mexico. Most cases have been acquired from ex

[Peptides as inhibitors of thrombin coagulation activity and of thrombocyte aggregation].

The analysis of literature and our own data of regulatory peptides influence on the blood coagulation system is presenting. Various natural and synthetic peptides inhibit the activity of thrombin and platelet aggregation. Direct specific inhibitors of thrombin are peptides developed on the base of D-Phe-Pro-Arg sequence. Strong specific inhibitors of the prothrombinase complex factor Xa were isolated from tissues and saliva of the blood-sucking organisms. These inhibitors decrease thrombin generation at the early stage of blood coagulation cascade Anticoagulating peptides from the tick Ornitho

A case of tick-borne relapsing fever in pregnancy.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is an infection caused by Borrelia spirochetes. In North America, Borrelia hermsii is the most common cause for TBRF. This vector-borne disease is transmitted by Ornithodoros hermsi, a soft-bodied tick found in high altitudes in northwestern United States and southwestern Canada. Once bitten by the tick and infected by B. hermsii, episodes of fever alternating with afebrile periods can occur. A case of TBRF in a pregnant host was complicated by Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction requiring critical care. This case emphasizes the importance of maintaining a high index

Tick-borne relapsing fever and Borrelia hermsii, Los Angeles County, California, USA.

The primary cause of tick-borne relapsing fever in western North America is Borrelia hermsii, a rodent-associated spirochete transmitted by the fast-feeding soft tick Ornithodoros hermsi. We describe a patient who had an illness consistent with relapsing fever after exposure in the mountains near Los Angeles, California, USA. The patient's convalescent-phase serum was seropositive for B. hermsii but negative for several other vector-borne bacterial pathogens. Investigations at the exposure site showed the presence of O. hermsi ticks infected with B. hermsii and the presence of rodents that wer

Rickettsia and relapsing fever Borrelia in Alectorobius kelleyi (Ixodida: Argasidae) from peri domestic bats in the northeastern United States.

The soft ticks (Argasidae) are known vectors of human and animal pathogens around the globe and are relatively understudied. Our aim was to assess the presence of Rickettsia and Borrelia bacteria in Alectorobius kelleyi (Argasidae) parasitizing synanthropic bats in the highly urbanized northeastern United States. By collaborating with parasitologists, bat scientists and wildlife rehabilitators we were successful in obtaining A. kelleyi from five states. Since Argasid larvae will attach to their hosts for many days, most A. kelleyi examined (92%) were larvae collected from sick or injured big b

Soft Tick Relapsing Fever - United States, 2012-2021.

Soft tick relapsing fever (STRF) (also known as tickborne relapsing fever) is a rare infection caused by certain Borrelia spirochetes and transmitted to humans by soft-bodied Ornithodoros ticks. In the United States, acquisition of STRF is commonly associated with exposure to rustic cabins, camping, and caves. Antibiotic treatment is highly effective for STRF, but without timely treatment, STRF can result in severe complications, including death. No nationally standardized case definition for STRF exists; however, the disease is reportable in 12 states. This report summarizes demographic and c

Serological evidence of Borrelia turicatae in Raccoons (Procyon lotor) from an endemic focus of tick-borne relapsing fever in Mexico.

Tick-borne relapsing fever is a neglected and overlooked disease. In Mexico, numerous historical reports document the distribution of Ornithodoros turicata, the vector of Borrelia turicatae, as well as human cases of infection. However, the enzootic cycle and reservoir hosts in Mexico remain unknown. Here, to detect previous infections with relapsing fever Borreliae in wild fauna a retrospective serological analysis was conducted with serum samples collected from raccoons trapped from 2022 to 2025 in the Navachiste region of Sinaloa, Mexico. Using a species-specific antigen, BipA from B. turic

Colony formation in solid medium by the relapsing fever spirochetes Borrelia hermsii and Borrelia turicatae.

Relapsing fever (RF) in North America is caused primarily by the spirochete Borrelia hermsii and is associated with the bite of its tick vector Ornithodoros hermsi. Although this spirochete was known long before the discovery of the Lyme disease (LD) spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, basic methods to facilitate the study of B. hermsii have lagged behind. One important technique to expedite the study of the molecular biology and pathogenesis of B. hermsii would be a reliable method to grow and clone these bacteria in solid medium, which we now describe. We have defined the solidifying agent, pl
