The response of the periodontal ligament to orthodontic extrusion of the incisor of a beagle was examined with light microscope and scanning electron microscope techniques. The ligament morphology was slightly altered by the procedure but was essentially normal. Teeth that were extruded and retained for 12 weeks exhibited partial relapse. Where a full thickness mucogingival flap was raised and immediately replaced in lieu of retention, continued extrusion was observed. Root resorption was observed at the interproximal region of the cervical third in three out of five specimens. The resorption

Inadequate maxillary incisor display can negatively impact facial esthetics. Various treatment options exist depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Skeletal anchorage was used to extrude the maxillary dentition and rotate the mandible backward, enhancing visibility of the maxillary incisors. An extrusion assembly was introduced to achieve orthodontic extrusion. Use of bite raisers and interarch elastics was also discussed. Treatment results demonstrated successful achievement of the treatment goals. In addition to optimal occlusion, the patient's facial profile improv

A case report of treatment for a traumatically intruded maxillary central incisor is described. An attempt at accelerating eruption via surgical exposure of the embedded tooth was only partially successful. Orthodontic extrusion of the partially erupted tooth brought the tooth into correct position.

The restoration of teeth that have been compromised by loss of crown and radicular structure due to caries, fractures, root resorption or iatrogenic lesions could result in the violation of the biologic width, with consequent gingival inflammation, loss of attachment, and alveolar bone loss. It is essential in these cases to obtain an adequate enough portion of the tooth structure to allow for a restoration that respects the biologic width. This can be achieved using a procedure that allows for the extrusion of the root in a single step, thereby shifting the compromised site from subgingival t

AIM: The aim of this report is to present a clinical case of impaction of a maxillary left central incisor in a mixed dentition caused by the presence of an odontoma as well as a review of the pertinent dental literature.
BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the normal tooth eruption patterns is essential for the identification and appropriate treatment of deviations in eruption that may endanger physiologic development. A delay in time between the exfoliation of a deciduous tooth and the eruption of its permanent successor may be related to a disorder known as dental retention. This occurs when tooth er

An impacted or missing permanent tooth can add significant complications to an otherwise straightforward case. When multiple impacted teeth are present, the case complexity increases further. Developing a treatment sequence, determining appropriate anchorage, and planning and executing sound biomechanics can be a challenge. The following case report illustrates a patient reportedly diagnosed with mild scleroderma as an adolescent. He presented for orthodontic treatment as an adult with multiple retained primary teeth and multiple impacted teeth. Diagnosis, treatment planning, and various metho

Intrusive luxation of primary teeth carries a high risk of damage to underlying permanent tooth germs. Ectopic eruption of permanent incisors is an unusual outcome of traumatic injury to their predecessors. In this case report, we describe the multidisciplinary management of the consequences of a primary tooth intrusion that led to severe ectopic eruption of the permanent left central incisor in a horizontal position at the level of the labial sulcus.

OBJECTIVE: This case report demonstrates the orthodontic treatment to correct a severe scissor bite and occlusal disharmony in a 26-year-old female patient, including the use of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and fixed orthodontic appliances.
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Severe scissor bite is associated with vertical problems, such as molar extrusion. For orthodontic treatment, interradicular TADs were used to intrude the extruded molars, control the inclination of molars, correct dental midline, and improve dental relationships.
CONCLUSIONS: This treatment not only achieved successful corr

In this case report, orthodontic intervention was used to move the gingival margin of a maxillary canine incisally by almost 9 mm to mimic a lateral incisor. Increasing the thickness of the labial plate of bone of the canine and subsequently increasing the thickness of the attached gingiva before extrusion prevented gingival recession at a later stage. In many situations, orthodontic treatment can achieve results that could not be attained by restorations and other means of cosmetic dentistry, especially when dealing with gingival margins and gingival height. A step-by-step approach to achievi

A numerical model that calculates bone apposition and resorption around a tooth root on the basis of bone remodeling theories was developed to simulate orthodontic tooth movements. The model was used to calculate different kinds of orthodontic tooth movements, that were then compared with the expected movements based on clinical experience. For simulation of the movements the root of a canine was modeled in an idealized way in the form of an elliptical paraboloid and was processed with a finite element program. The finite element model was loaded with defined force systems. Two model assumptio

An orthodontic magnetic extrusion technique is described for the management of an extensively damaged maxillary premolar. A cylindrical neodymium-iron-boron (Nd2Fe14B) magnet was attached to the remaining tooth structure, and a second magnet was placed on a resin-bonded partial denture. A 4.5-mm extrusion was obtained after 3 adjustments, and the tooth was prepared with a 3-mm buccal and 2-mm lingual ferrule by following a biologically oriented preparation technique and restored with a monolithic zirconia crown. Eighteen months after completing the treatment, no evidence of soft tissue dehisce

The management of impacted mandibular premolars, often requiring orthodontic traction to preserve teeth, is frequently complicated by the lack of precise three-dimensional control in conventional traction techniques, which can lead to prolonged treatment, iatrogenic damage, or failure. This case series demonstrates the efficacy of a novel approach utilizing buccal-shelf mini-implants as skeletal anchorage for customized cantilever springs in the orthodontic traction of impacted mandibular premolars. Three patients with varying impaction patterns (a 34-year-old male with tooth 35, an 11-year-ol

Implant site development through orthodontic extrusion can regenerate hard and soft tissue volumes lost to periodontal disease. This extrusive procedure is indicated especially when a maxillary incisor is severely compromised and the esthetic demands are high. This article describes a novel approach to alveolar bone development that enhanced the volume of the implant site. The technique involves tipping the maxillary incisor in the direction of the angular defect to increase alveolar bone volume in the implant site; simultaneous improvement of the interproximal papillary height can also be exp

This report presents a case of a completely intrusive luxation of an immature permanent central incisor in a 7 years 9 months-old girl. Because there are severe intrusive trauma and cortical alveolar bone fracture, it was impossible to reposition with orthodontic or surgical method alone. The intruded tooth was repositioned to healthy alveolar bone level by using surgical extrusion and stabilization with sutures and periodontal pack. After healing of adjacent bone, the intruded maxillary central incisor erupted orthodontically by removable orthodontic appliance. It was moved from a high positi
