BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) causes morbidity and mortality in the general population. Several events occur after lower limb orthopedic surgery, but the contribution from various types of lower limb surgery is not well known.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the postoperative incidence of VTE for all types of lower extremity orthopedic surgery compared with the background population.
METHODS: Individual-level linkage of Danish nationwide register data for all Danish residents with first-time orthopedic surgery of the lower limb (1996-2017) and, for each of these, four controls from the

BACKGROUND: Handheld surgical robots offer functionalities, such as active guidance, tremor suppression and force reflection, for surgeons to enhance their skill in manipulating surgical tools during medical intervention. In orthopedic surgery, the robot additionally has to offer sufficient rigidity and power for bone machining. The size and weight of the mechanical design, together with the control behaviour associated with involuntary hand motion, navigation and reflected force to the human, all influence the overall performance of an orthopedic handheld robot.
METHODS: The paper proposes a

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a complex and multifactorial process arising from a variety of factors, including recent surgical procedures, traumatic events, and periods of prolonged immobility. The extended period of stasis post-orthopedic surgery places patients at a notably high risk of developing DVT, and DVT-related pulmonary embolism (PE) ranks as the third most common cause of death in orthopedic surgery patients. This review examines the multifaceted risk factors contributing to the development of DVT in orthopedic patients. Additionally, it addresses the importance of DVT prophylaxis

Orthopedic trauma surgery is associated with an increased risk of postoperative hypercoagulability, predisposing patients to potentially life-threatening thromboembolic complications, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Conventional coagulation tests, including prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and international normalized ratio (INR), have limited sensitivity in detecting the complex hemostatic alterations that occur following orthopedic trauma procedures. In recent years, viscoelastic hemostatic assays-thromboelastography (TEG)

Many surgeons recommend weight loss in preparation for orthopedic procedures, yet the impact of surgically induced weight loss before orthopedic procedures is not clear. We undertook a literature review to assess the impact of bariatric surgery on the outcomes of total joint arthroplasty (TJA). We searched PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for studies (2010-2017) that evaluated the associations between obesity, bariatric surgery, and orthopedic surgery. Nine studies found that prior bariatric surgery decreased major and minor post-operative complications, operating room (OR

Musculoskeletal infections (MSKI), which are a major problem in orthopedics, occur when the pathogen eludes or overwhelms the host immune system. While effective vaccines and immunotherapies to prevent and treat MSKI should be possible, fundamental knowledge gaps in our understanding of protective, nonprotective, and pathogenic host immunity are prohibitive. We also lack critical knowledge of how host immunity is affected by the microbiome, implants, prior infection, nutrition, antibiotics, and concomitant therapies, autoimmunity, and other comorbidities. To define our current knowledge of the

Stem cell therapies have become widely popular in orthopaedic surgery, with a recent interest in adipose-derived therapeutics. Adipose-derived mesenchymal signaling cells (ADSCs) and micronized adipose tissue (MAT) are unique therapies derived from different processing methods. Characterizing the most influential studies in lipoaspirate research can help clarify controversies in definitions, identify core literature, and further collective knowledge for educational purposes. Population aging makes osteoporotic fractures (OP) an increasingly serious healthcare problem. It is estimated that there are approximately 2,200,000 people with an osteoporotic fracture in Poland, and according to the NFZ (National Health Found) report 126,100 new fractures were registered in 2018, including 34,700 fractures of the proximal femur (PFF). Surgical treatment of OP fractures is difficult due to local conditions and the general health condition of the patients. Reduced bone strength makes it difficult to achieve permanent bone fixation and union. The current "Guidelines for th

This clinical consensus statement of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons focuses on the highly debated subject of the management of adult flatfoot (AAFD). In developing this statement, the AAFD consensus statement panel attempted to address the most relevant issues facing the foot and ankle surgeon today, using the best evidence-based literature available. The panel created and researched 16 statements and generated opinions on the appropriateness of the statements. The results of the research on this topic and the opinions of the panel are presented here.

BACKGROUND: Formalized training in the specialty of orthopedic surgery began at the Mayo Clinic nearly 100 years ago, and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and disease began even earlier. A robust historical patient database provides the opportunity for review of the first recorded orthopedic cases at our institution, which date back to 1907.
METHODS: The first 400 sequential medical charts of the Mayo Clinic's patient record database were comprehensively reviewed in order to identify the first documented orthopedic cases.
RESULTS: Of the first 400 patients reviewed, 15 (4%

OBJECTIVE: This historical vignette aims to elucidate the contributions of Professor Theodoros Aretaios (1829-1893) to orthopedic surgery in nineteenth-century Greece.
METHODS: Documentary research was conducted of Aretaios' personal patient archives, preserved in the National Library of Greece, to validate and evaluate his surgical practices.
RESULTS: The archival records revealed a total of 22 orthopedic cases. Aretaios primarily performed upper and lower limb amputations and dislocation reductions. Reconstructive bone and joint operations were less frequent in his practice.
CONCLUSION: T
