Photodegradation of furosemide solutions.

Photodegradation of furosemide was studied under the influence of fluorescent and UV lights. Photodecomposition of furosemide solutions appeared to follow first-order kinetics. The compound was found to be most stable at an optimum pH of 7. Long-wave UV light caused the fastest rate of degradation of furosemide. Glutathione, thiourea, EDTA, sodium thiosulfate, sodium metabisulfite, glycine, sodium benzoate and uric acid were found to be ineffective as photoprotective agents. Increase in ionic strength did not cause any change in the degradation rate constant. Amber glass vials and transparent

Respiratory alkalosis: no effect on blood lactate decline or exercise performance.

It was the purpose of this study to determine the effects of respiratory alkalosis before and after high intensity exercise on recovery blood lactate concentration. Five subjects were studied under three different acid-base conditions before and after 45 s of maximal effort exercise: 1) hyperventilating room air before exercise (Respiratory Alkalosis Before = RALB, 2) hyperventilating room air during recovery (Respiratory Alkalosis After = RALA), and 3) breathing room air normally throughout rest and recovery (Control = C). RALB increased blood pH during rest to 7.65 +/- 0.03 while RALA increa

Sources of variation in the column-chromatographic determination of glycohemoglobin (HbA1).

We studied the influence of many variables on the cation-exchange chromatographic determination of glycohemoglobin was minicolumns (HbA1) and with macrocolumns (HbA1a+b and HbA1c). Minicolumns are most sensitive to buffer composition. The best conditions are pH 6.78 and sodium, potassium, and phosphate concentrations of 54.8, and 36 mmol/L, respectively. In fact, there is no clear cut-off point for elution. A cyanide concentration of 1.5 mmol/L has no negative effects. For macrocolumns, the influence of temperature is demonstrated; 20 degrees C is optimal. A higher temperature caused results f

Clinical and metabolic consequences to cattle of rumen overdosing with di-ureido iso-butane (DUIB).

Di-ureido iso-butane (DUIB) was overdosed on three occasions to two year-old bullocks, under experimental conditions. Six g/kg live weight of DUIB was mixed manually into the rumen contents formed by a predominantly hay diet (10 kg) with added concentrates (2 kg). Marked clinical signs were observed for 72 h before recovery. Food and water intake were interrupted and a smell of ammonia saturated the accommodation. Blood concentrations of urea-nitrogen increased, while glucose fell; a metabolic alkalosis was present. Rumen VFA concentrations fell, but without altering the proportions of the ind

[Hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast media: Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Position Statement of the Drug Allergy Committee of the Mexican College of Clinical Immunology and Allergy].

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions to iodinated contrast media represent a relevant clinical issue due to their increasing use in radiodiagnostic procedures. These reactions are classified as immediate or non-immediate, immunological and non-immunological, with variable prevalence and potentially serious consequences such as anaphylaxis or severe cutaneous adverse reactions. Identifying risk factors, classification, and immunological mechanisms of iodinated contrast media enables the development of effective prevention and management strategies. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the chemical characte

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State.

Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) is an underrecognized diabetic emergency with high morbidity and mortality. Many features of HHS overlap with those of diabetic ketoacidosis but key differentiators for HHS are serum osmolality greater than 320 mOsm/kg, lack of metabolic acidosis, and minimal to no presence of ketones. HHS is often triggered by an underlying illness-most commonly infection but may also be triggered by stroke, acute coronary syndrome, and other acute illnesses. Treatment guidelines recommend aggressive volume-repletion of osmotic losses in addition to insulin therapy, plus

Diagnostic algorithm of hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disturbance and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is driven by an excess of free water relative to total body sodium. While determining the underlying cause(s) of hyponatremia can be challenging, this can be facilitated by an algorithmic approach. Hypotonic hyponatremia is diagnosed by excluding translocational and pseudohyponatremia and confirmed by measuring plasma osmolality. Measuring urine osmolality and urine sodium concentration together with clinical history and examination, especially assessment of volume status, can d

Effect of osmolarity and displacement rate on cartilage microfracture clusters failure into two regimes.

Articular cartilage is a poroviscoelastic (PVE) material with remarkable resistance to fracture and fatigue failure. Cartilage failure mechanisms and material properties that govern failure are incompletely understood. Because cartilage is partially comprised of negatively charged glycosaminoglycans, altering solvent osmolarity can influence PVE relaxations. Therefore, this study aims to use osmolarity as a tool to provide additional data to interpret the role of PVE relaxations and identify cartilage failure regimes. Cartilage fracture was induced using a 100 μm radius spheroconical indenter

Muscles provide an internal water reserve for reproduction.

The use of fat to support the energy needs of reproduction (i.e. capital breeding) has been studied in a diversity of taxa. However, despite reproductive output (i.e. young or eggs) being approximately 70% water, little is known about the availability of internal resources to accommodate the hydric demands of reproduction. Recent research suggests that dehydration increases the catabolism of muscle as a means of maintaining water balance. Accordingly, we investigated the interactive effects of reproductive investment and water deprivation on catabolism and reproductive output in female Childre

Colloid Deposit Morphology and Clogging in Porous Media: Fundamental Insights Through Investigation of Deposit Fractal Dimension.

Experiments reveal a wide discrepancy between the permeability of porous media containing colloid deposits and the available predictive equations. Evidence suggests that this discrepancy results, in part, from the predictive equations failing to account for colloid deposit morphology. This article reports a series of experiments using static light scattering (SLS) to characterize colloid deposit morphology within refractive index matched (RIM) porous media during flow through a column. Real time measurements of permeability, specific deposit, deposit fractal dimension, and deposit radius of gy

An examination of the relationship between ocular surface tear osmolarity compartments and epitheliopathy.

A 2014 PubMed search for tear hyperosmolarity and corneal stain yielded 2960 results. Selections from those providing evidence of variations in osmolarity were used to refine the compartmentalization model of tear osmolarity over the ocular surface. This new model includes the low point of freshly produced isotonic tears in the upper conjunctival sac, with osmolarity increasing successively in the upper meniscus, the upper area of exposed ocular surface, the lower area of over-exposed ocular surface, the lower meniscus, and the lower conjunctival sac. Compartmentalization is used to explain ep

A second-generation computational modeling of cardiac electrophysiology: response of action potential to ionic concentration changes and metabolic inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrhythmias are becoming one of the major health care problem in the world, causing numerous serious disease conditions including stroke and sudden cardiac death. Furthermore, cardiac arrhythmias are intimately related to the signaling ability of cardiac cells, and are caused by signaling defects. Consequently, modeling the electrical activity of the heart, and the complex signaling models that subtend dangerous arrhythmias such as tachycardia and fibrillation, necessitates a quantitative model of action potential (AP) propagation. Yet, many electrophysiological models, whi

Homocysteine disulphides and vascular disease.

The total plasma concentration of homocysteine is a marker of this amino acid's atherogenic potential. However, the homocysteine pool exists almost entirely as oxidized homocysteine equivalents (OHcyE), composed of homocystine and cysteine-homocysteine disulphides (20-30%), and protein-bound disulphide (70-80%). We have noticed that the total concentration of OHcyE in injured coronary artery tissue is higher than the aqueous solubility of homocystine (approximately 1.4-1.5 x 10<formula>;{-3}</formula> mol kg<formula>;{-1}</formula> versus approximately 0.6 mol kg<formula>;{-1})</formula>. The effect of ionic strength on the complexation of copper (II) with salicylate ion.

The complexation of Cu2+ with the hydrogen salicylate, HL-, ion has been studied, at 25 degrees C, by potentiometric measurements with a glass electrode in NaClO4 media for an ionic strength range from 0.5 to 3 M. The complexes found were CuL, CuL2(2-) and CuHL+. Stability constants, extrapolated to zero ionic strength by using the Specific Interaction Theory were: [formula: see text]

The relationship between vasopressin and endolymphatic hydrops in the guinea pig.

Clinical studies have shown that plasma vasopressin level is significantly elevated in patients with Meniere's disease. Other reports indicated that histamine induced a very quick and high elevation of vasopressin level and caused nystagmus in experimentally produced endolymphatic hydrops. We became interested in further investigating the details of this relationship by studying the effect of experimental endolymphatic hydrops and histamine upon plasma vasopressin level in the guinea pig. The results are as follows: 1) Histamine increased the plasma vasopressin level in normal guinea pigs. 2)

Hyperosmolar non-ketotic diabetic coma and rhabdomyolysis.

Rhabdomyolysis is a rare but potentially fatal complication of hyperosmolar states. We report a case of severe hyperosmolar non-ketotic diabetic coma causing rhabdomyolysis in a young man. Despite very high levels of creatine kinase there was no detectable myoglobinuria. Creatine kinase estimation should be a standard investigation in all patients presenting with a hyperosmolar state.

[The osmolar gap and the diagnosis of severe alcohol intoxication].

The calculated osmolar gap is a useful diagnostic tool in clinical toxicology whenever toxicologic screens are not available. In a case of severe intoxication with ethyl alcohol there was deep coma and a calculated osmolar gap of 208 mOsm, consistent with an ethanol plasma level of 958 mg/dl. The diagnosis of severe ethanol intoxication was confirmed later. Serial calculations of the osmolar gap served to assess the clinical course.
