Klippel-Feil syndrome cases from Slovakia.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes two probable cases of Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) from the region of modern Slovakia and provides an overview of possible cases reported in 'grey' literature. MATERIALS: Two adult skeletons with probable KFS from Vráble-Veľké Lehemby and Radoľa-Koscelisko. METHODS: Macroscopic analysis was performed using standard osteological methods. RESULTS: The two analyzed skeletons represent probable cases of KFS; one from the Neolithic, and one from the Middle Ages. Additional cases of potential KFS have been indicated within the 'grey' literature. CONCLUSIONS: The stu

A new microraptorine theropod from the Jehol Biota and growth in early dromaeosaurids.

Fossils from the Jehol Group (Early Cretaceous, Liaoning Province, China) are integral to our understanding of Paraves, the clade of dinosaurs grouping dromaeosaurids, troodontids, and avialians, including living birds. However, many taxa are represented by specimens of unclear ontogenetic age. Without a more thorough understanding of ontogeny, evolutionary relationships and significance of character states within paravian dinosaurs may be obscured and our ability to infer their biology restricted. We describe a complete specimen of a new microraptorine dromaeosaur, Wulong bohaiensis gen. et s

Delayed diagnosis of mucopolysaccharidosis type I in a patient with spinopelvic instability, short stature, and skeletal dysplasia.

Pathogenic variants in IDUA, encoding α-L-iduronidase (IDUA), cause the autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I). Deficiency of α-L-iduronidase leads to the accumulation of partially degraded glycosaminoglycans in various tissues, including the musculoskeletal system. Clinically, typical skeletal manifestations are dysostosis multiplex, joint contractures, and low BMD. Mucopolysaccharidosis type I represents a spectrum of disease severity. Especially in attenuated disease, establishing an accurate diagnosis and initiating disease-specific therapy, inc

The internal cranial morphology of an armoured dinosaur Euoplocephalus corroborated by X-ray computed tomographic reconstruction.

Internal cranial anatomy is a challenging area to study in fossilized skulls because of small sample sizes and varied post-mortem preservational alterations. This difficulty has led to the lack of correspondence between results obtained from direct osteological observation and from more indirect reconstruction methods. This paper presents corroborating evidence from direct osteological observation and from reconstruction based on computed X-ray tomography (CT) on the internal cranial anatomy of the ankylosaurid dinosaur Euoplocephalus tutus. A remarkable specimen of Euoplocephalus preserves ra

New insights into dinosaur jaw muscle anatomy.

Jaw muscles are key components of the head and critical to testing hypotheses of soft-tissue homology, skull function, and evolution. Dinosaurs evolved an extraordinary diversity of cranial forms adapted to a variety of feeding behaviors. However, disparate evolutionary transformations in head shape and function among dinosaurs and their living relatives, birds and crocodylians, impair straightforward reconstructions of muscles, and other important cephalic soft tissues. This study presents the osteological correlates and inferred soft tissue anatomy of the jaw muscles and relevant neurovascul

Sink or swim? Bone density as a mechanism for buoyancy control in early cetaceans.

Previous analyses have shown that secondarily aquatic tetrapods, including whales, exhibit osteological adaptations to life in water as part of their complex buoyancy control systems. These structural specializations of bone span hyperostosis through osteoporosis. The past 15 years of paleontological effort has provided an unprecedented opportunity to examine the osteological transformation of whales as they make their transition to an obligate aquatic lifestyle over a 10-million-year period. It is hypothesized that whales manifest their osteological specialization in the same manner as extant

[Trabecular bone score in rheumatology : Are there benefits in comparison to bone densitometry alone?].

Patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases have an increased risk of fractures due to the inflammatory potential of the disease and also because of the treatment with glucocorticoids that is often necessary. According to the current guidelines of the Governing Body on Osteology (DVO), the fracture risk can be assessed using dual energy X‑ray absorptiometry and can also be supplemented by measuring the trabecular bone score (TBS). The assessment of the TBS offers additional advantages, for example in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and in patients with osteoproliferative changes of the s

A Rare Presentation of Os Odontoideum with Multiple Vertebral Fusion in Type III Klippel-Feil Syndrome (KFS) - A Case Report.

An abnormal atlas and axis with presence of os odontoideum and fusion of multiple vertebrae were noted in an intact skeleton, in the osteology museum of the Department of Anatomy of North Bengal Medical College, West Bengal, India. These multiple abnormalities at various levels along with increased thickness of antero-posterior arch of atlas pointed towards the congenital nature of the anomalies, possibly due to Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS). These unusual findings denote a developmental background of the manifestations. The cervical instability, resultant neurodeficit and impairment of quality of

[Glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis].

Secondary osteoporosis is caused by various non-physiological factors. It affects 5% of all patients with osteoporosis and accounts for 20% of all osteoporotic fractures. Glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis is the most common form of secondary osteoporosis, whereas an endogenous Cushing syndrome rarely results in decreased bone mineral density. In addition, chronic inflammatory diseases which require a glucocorticoid therapy also need to be considered in the context of osteoporosis. This article presents the current data on glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis and an update of the proposed DVO

From fins to limbs to fins: limb evolution in fossil marine reptiles.

Limb osteology and ontogenetic patterns of limb ossification are reviewed for extinct lineages of aquatically adapted diapsid reptiles. Phylogenies including these fossil taxa show that paddle-like limbs were independently derived, and that the varied limb morphologies were produced by evolutionary modifications to different aspects of the limb skeleton. Ancient marine reptiles modify the limb by reducing the relative size of the epipodials, modifying the perichondral and periosteal surface of elements distal to the propodials, and evolving extremes of hyperphalangy and hyperdactyly. Prenatal traces of aberrant neurofacial growth.

The interrelation between the development of the brain/peripheral nerves and that of the surrounding bone tissue is termed neuro-osteology. In orthodontic and pediatric practice the development of the hard tissues is evaluated radiographically, but the development of the neural tissue within the bone tissue is not evaluated. In this review the emphasis is placed on two neuro-osteologic interrelations that can be observed on profile radiographs and orthopantomograms, respectively. One is the connection between the pituitary gland of the central nervous system and the sella turcica (profile radi

Complete Agenesis of Dorsal Wall of Sacral Canal: A Case Report.

The sacral canal is the continuation of the vertebral canal in the sacrum. The sacral canal contains spinal meninges, lumbar and sacral part of spinal nerves and filum terminale. So sacral canal has been used for the caudal epidural block. During routine osteology demonstration classes for undergraduate students, we observed a dry human sacrum with complete agenesis of the dorsal wall of the sacral canal. Knowledge of these variations is important to diagnose lower back pain, sciatica, caudal regression syndrome and to avoid complications related to caudal epidural block and other spinal surge

Cervical Rib Synostosis to the First Rib: A Rare Anatomic Variation.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anatomic variations exist in human anatomy, which create both diagnostic and treatment challenges. Understanding the osteologic and radiographic anatomy of supernumerary ribs arising from the cervical spine and recognizing the morphologic variations thereof is of great importance to clinicians, radiologists, and surgeons alike. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case study describes osteologic morphology and radiologic characteristics of a rare anatomic variant of a cervical rib (CR): a unilateral, right-sided CR synostosis to the first thoracic rib of a 50-year-old South African m

New evidence suggesting a dissociated etiology for cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis.

OBJECTIVES: Porotic hyperostosis (PH), characterized by porotic lesions on the cranial vault, and cribra orbitalia (CO), a localized appearance of porotic lesions on the roof of the orbits, are relatively common osteological conditions. Their etiology has been the focus of several studies, and an association with anemia has long been suggested. Anemia often causes bone marrow hypertrophy or hyperplasia, leading to the expansion in trabecular or cranial diploic bone as a result of increased hematopoiesis. Hypertrophy and/or hyperplasia is often coupled with a disruption of the remodeling proces

Estimating the Stature of an Ancient North Andean Population From Articular Breadths and Diaphyseal Diameters: An Extension of Anzellini and Toyne (2020).

OBJECTIVES: For anthropologists and forensic scientists, sex estimation using skeletally dimorphic traits is fundamental in biological profile reconstruction. Archaeogenetic research on past populations allows us to identify genetic sex generating opportunities to validate the accuracy of commonly used skeletal traits. We compare genetic sex estimates, derived from aDNA analysis of dental calculus, with macroscopic skeletal observations to ascertain the accuracy of trait-based estimates on British skeletons. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental calculus was sampled from 146 individuals from two Brit

Comparative Morphology and Mechanics of Aquatic and Terrestrial Feeding Salamanders.

Salamanders are often used as models to understand the iconic vertebrate water-land transition as they exhibit similar morphology and, presumably, ecologies as early tetrapods. Recent studies have demonstrated previously unappreciated diversity in salamander feeding mechanisms, however, compared to mammals, and reptiles there is little data on the internal mechanical response of salamander skulls to feeding loads. In this study, we used data from microCT scans to compare skull osteology and jaw muscle architecture in an aquatic salamander (Necturus) and a terrestrial salamander (Salamandra), w

Novel Osteo Refurbishment Method and Choice of Colouring Materials for Anatomy Specimens.

OBJECTIVE: The introduction of competency-based medical education curriculum and a shifted focus towards self-directed learning (SDL) in medical schools across the world has necessitated a reduction of didactic teaching hours. Museum specimens are an indispensable tool in anatomy teaching and can play a pivotal role in fostering and reinforcing SDL. Coloring of specimens makes it attractive and facilitates understanding anatomy. The aims of this study were: (1) weigh up the two commonly used coloring materials in anatomy viz. acrylic paint and nail polish; and (2) to assess the perception of a

Recognition of sickle cell anemia in skeletal remains of children.

The present study discusses in detail the osteological changes associated with sickle cell anemia in children and their importance in differential diagnosis. Posterior calcaneal and specific articular surface disruptive metacarpal lesions are diagnostic for sickle cell anemia. Calvarial thickening, tibial and femoral cortical bone thickening, and bowing are of more limited utility in differential diagnosis. Granular osteoporosis, pelvic demineralization and rib broadening are nonspecific. Localized calvarial "ballooning," previously not described, may have diagnostic significance. Bone marrow

Anatomy of the craniocervical junction - A review.

An in-depth understanding of the anatomy of the craniocervical junction (CCJ) is indispensable in skull base neurosurgery. In this paper, we discuss the osteology of the occipital bone, the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), the ligaments and the muscle anatomy of the CCJ region and their relationships with the vertebral artery. We will also discuss the trajectory of the vertebral artery and review the anatomy of the jugular foramen and lower cranial nerves (IX to XII). The most important surgical approaches to the CCJ, including the far lateral approach, the anterolateral approach of Bernard George an
