Gorham-Stout (GS) disease is a rare disease of the bone and is also known as massive osteolysis. Less than 200 cases have been reported in the world literature. A 29-year-old female with a diagnosis of GS disease was identified. She complained of aural fullness and tinnitus bilaterally. Demineralization and moth-eaten changes of the osseous structures of the skull base and posterior fossa were prominent. The left mastoid air cells were opacified and erosion extended to the left jugular foramen, left hypoglossal canal, left stylomastoid process, and left eustachian tube. The radiographic findin

This case report of a 61-year-old woman suffering from Gorham-Stout syndrome shows osteolyses of the left pelvis, proximal femur and lumbar spine. The therapeutic regime has included two courses of percutaneous radiotherapy and also continuous application of bisphosphonates over 17 years. Despite this antiresorptive therapy, elevated urinary excretion of desoxypyridinoline has indicated the persistence of increased bone destruction. The radiological progression following bisphosphonate treatment was only moderate. However, physical disability is reduced, but without soaring handicaps suggestin

Classification of skeletal angiomatosis into aggressive and nonaggressive types is on the basis of their clinical behavior and pattern of skeletal involvement (regional and disseminated). Gorham's disease (massive osteolysis) is an aggressive form of skeletal angiomatosis that shows regional involvement, frequently involving the shoulder and hip areas. Cystic angiomatosis is a nonaggressive form of skeletal angiomatosis with multifocal involvement, predominantly affecting the trunk bones. The imaging modalities gave the diagnosis of cystic angiomatosis of humerus showing multicystic lytic area

BACKGROUND: Gorham-Stout disease is an unusual, progressive syndrome of unknown etiology characterized by mono- or polyostotic osteolysis most often affecting children and young adults. The onset is insidious and the disease progresses to extensive and potentially disabling osteolysis often unresponsive to therapeutic intervention. Although bone and soft tissue lesions are the most frequent manifestations of Gorham-Stout disease, skin lesions can occur and may provide a clue to the pathogenesis of this rare syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to describe characteristics of vascular skin lesions

Gorham disease is an extremely rare condition of unknown etiology characterized by progressive osteolysis. Only 28 cases of its spinal involvement have been reported, and some of those cases showed kyphosis, kyphoscoliosis, subluxation or dislocation. No definite regimen of treatment has been established yet. A 10-year-old boy presented with a severe and progressive kyphosis over 90 degrees caused by Gorham disease from T3 to T12. In situ posterior fusion with a hook and rod system and iliac bone grafts were performed, but after surgery, he had complete paraplegia and its cause was uncertain.

A group of 14 patients underwent 17 consecutive open surgical excisions of the distal clavicle for atraumatic osteolysis after having failed conservative treatment. All patients were men involved in weight training or heavy-lifting occupations. The diagnosis was based on no history of shoulder trauma, positive plain radiographs, and positive joint scintigraphy. All 14 patients were available for followup at an average of 25 months postoperatively. The UCLA Shoulder Rating Scale was used for evaluation. All patients reported full return to sports and employment at a satisfactory level. All resu

Progressive teleangiomatous osteolysis (P.T.O.) is a very rare disease, particularly when one recalls that only five cases have been recorded at the Rizzoli Institute (Campanacci, 1981). The aetiopathogenesis is unknown and according to Campanacci it is not clear whether it is attributable to an angiomatous condition or to a post-traumatic dystrophy. A typical case is presented, localised in the thoracic cage and complicated by severe haemothorax. The patient was observed over a period of 17 years and made a complete recovery.

Wear debris-induced osteolysis, especially titanium (Ti) particles-induced osteolysis, is the most common cause of arthroplasty failure with no effective therapy. Previous studies have suggested that inflammation and impaired osteogenesis are associated with Ti particles -induced osteolysis. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element in the human body, which forms selenomethionine (Se-Met) in nature, and selenoproteins has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant stress effects. In this study, the effects of Se-Met on Ti particles-induced osteolysis were observed and the potential mechanism w

CASE: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disorder characterized by massive bone destruction. Consensus is lacking on the effective treatment strategies for GSD. This report presents 2 cases of GSD, a 47-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman, involving the shoulder girdle which were successfully controlled by antiresorptive agents including bisphosphonates and denosumab, the antireceptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand antibody.
CONCLUSIONS: These 2 cases suggest that antiresorptive agents targeting osteoclasts can be efficacious therapeutic options for GSD. This is the first case of GS

Familial expansile osteolysis is a rare and possibly unique form of hereditary bone dysplasia with dental manifestations that has affected 42 members of a Northern Ireland family for five generations. Twenty-seven family members, aged 3 to 60 years, were examined clinically and radiographically, and it was found that cervical and/or apical root resorption is an early manifestation of the dysplasia. Of the 20 family members with skeletal manifestations of familial expansile osteolysis, 16 showed root resorption. Root resorption may therefore be a good prognosticator for later bone involvement.

Multiple myeloma is a neoplasm of plasma cells affecting mostly the elderly with incidence peaks between 60 and 70 years. This disease is exceedingly rare in younger people, especially in adults under 30-year-old. Non-secretory multiple myeloma accounts for 1-5% of all cases of multiple myeloma. It is also a rare condition in young adult patients, and only six cases have been reported [1]. We herein describe a rare case of non-secretory myeloma in a 22-year-old male, explaining from chest wall pain, without general manifestation. Plain radiography and CT scans revealed diffuse osteolytic lesio

Gorham's disease or vanishing bone disease is a rare, progressive musculoskeletal disorder characterized by resorption of bone matrix, and later replaced by fibrous connective tissue. The disease has no specific predilection for age, gender, or race. The most common sites of involvement are the shoulder and pelvic bones. To date, nearly 50 cases of Gorham's disease with maxillofacial involvement have been reported in the literature. The etiology of Gorham's disease is not known, clinical features are variable, and prognosis is generally good unless vital structures are involved. Due to the rar

We report here a case of the rare Gorham-Stout syndrome (GSS) of the humerus. GSS is a disease in the course of which spontaneous idiopathic osteolysis occurs. We describe a case of a 46-year-old business economist who suffered an inadequate trauma and within 3 weeks developed self-limited idiopathic osteolysis of the left humerus head, also affecting the rotator cuff. This could be diagnosed especially on the basis of histopathological findings. Hereupon we indicated operative repair by means of inverted shoulder joint endoprosthesis.

Gorham-Stout syndrome is a rare disease and most often recognized in children and young adults. Chylothorax is a serious complication of Gorham-Stout syndrome. The treatment of either Gorham-Stout syndrome or chylothorax is still a dilemma. We described a 9-year-old girl with Gorham-Stout syndrome and chylothorax who was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea, orthopnea, and bone pain, and treated with interferon alpha-2b.

Gorham-Stout disease is characterized by local proliferation of small vascular or lymphatic channels resulting in progressive destruction and resorption of bone. The etiology and pathogenesis of the disease remains mostly unknown, despite some 175 reported cases. A case of Gorham-Stout disease of the humerus in a 14-year-old boy is described. The patient presented with progressive pain and deformity of the right arm. Although the disease was described in different bones of the body its location in the humerus is rare. We report the natural history and clinical follow-up in a young patient. A f

Gorham-Stout syndrome, also called "disappearing bone disease" or idiopathic massive osteolysis, is a rare disease of unknown etiology and pathogenesis. It is characterized by rapidly progressive localized massive osteolysis associated to a proliferation of vascular structures of benign origin in which the absence of new bone formation is representative. We present two cases (a six-year-old boy with affected right ulna, and a 15-year-old girl with right rib affection associated to chylothorax) of this disease with the characteristic clinical, histological, and imaging findings.

BACKGROUND: A 17-year-old male presented with pain in his lower-left chest. He had no significant medical history and was previously in good health. He had a fractured ninth left anterior rib and the tenth, eleventh and twelfth ribs were absent, which was thought to be a congenital anomaly. Several months later, he presented again with back pain, an enlarging mass in the lower-left chest wall, erosion of the lateral pedicles of the lower thoracic vertebrae and pleural effusion.
INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination, chest X-ray, MRI of the spine, incisional biopsy, serial CT imaging of the hem
