Abdominal aortic rupture from an impaling osteophyte following blunt trauma.

Blunt injury of the abdominal aorta is highly fatal. We present an unusual case of an osteophyte impaling the abdominal aorta treated by endovascular repair. A 77-year-old man sustained a thoracolumbar fracture-dislocation with posterior aortic rupture between his celiac and superior mesenteric artery origins. His aortic injury was treated with a stent graft, excluding the celiac origin. He was dismissed on postoperative day 6. At 6 months, he had returned to most preinjury activities, and at 2-year follow-up, he continues to have good functional outcome. Endovascular repair may be successfull

Vertebral osteophyte of pre-modern Korean skeletons from Joseon tombs.

Spinal osteophytic changes are known to be affected by differences in age, sex, population, and mechanical stress. We examined Joseon skeletons (n=87) to obtain vertebral osteophytosis data on a pre-modern Korean population. The mean osteophytic value (MOV) of vertebrae increased in the cervical-thoracic-lumbar order. More severe osteophytosis was found in the vertebrae (C5, T9, T10, and L4) farthest from the line of gravity, while the general pattern of vertebral osteophytosis appeared similar to those of previous reports on other skeletal series. More severe osteophytes were much more common

Peroneal nerve compression resulting from fibular head osteophyte-like lesions.

BACKGROUND: The anatomical relationship of the fibular head with the fibular nerve is a critical point in regard to injuries of peripheral nerves in the lower extremities. In this location, the peroneal nerve may be injured due to several mechanisms, and osteophyte-like lesions can be considered as a differential diagnosis. METHODS: The suitable literature concerning this association is reviewed and a case is presented. A 15-year-old adolescent boy presented with right peroneal nerve palsy on admission. The radiological examinations (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) demonst

Anterior osteophyte discrimination in lumbar vertebrae using size-invariant features.

Radiologists often examine X-rays of cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae for determining the presence of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. For individual vertebra assessment, the boundary increasingly digresses from the general rectangular shape as the vertebra becomes less normal in appearance. For an abnormal vertebra, bony growths ('osteophytes') may appear at the vertebral comers, resulting in a change in the vertebra's shape. Image processing techniques are presented for computing size-invariant, convex hull-based features to highlight anterior osteophytes. Feature evaluation of 714 lu

Large cervical osteophyte--another cause of difficult flexible fibreoptic intubation.

A patient suffering from ankylosing spondylitis required surgical excision of a large anterior osteophyte of the cervical spine. Fibreoptic nasal intubation was difficult due to distortion of the airway by the osteophyte. This cause of difficult flexible fibreoptic intubation has not been described previously.

Bone remodeling and osteophyte formation after remission of rheumatoid arthritis.

Bone remodeling and osteophyte formation rarely take place in active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). To determine if disease inactivation leads to their occurrence, we studied 38 patients with RA whose disease had gone into drug induced remission. We looked for osteophytes at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints in roentgenograms taken before and after remission, and correlated their presence to that of osteoarthritis of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints. There were 21 patients with RA who had a median of 3 (range 1-8) osteophytes in their "remission" films which were rarely present in their

Anterolateral extrapharyngeal approach for cervical osteophyte-induced dysphagia. Literature review.

While it is estimated that hypertrophic cervical osteophytes occur in up to 20% to 30% of the population, they are only rarely associated with dysphagia. Pathophysiologically, dysphagia may occur secondary to 1) mechanical compression with partial obstruction, or 2) periesophageal inflammation caused by pharyngoesophageal motion over the osteophytes. A careful history, indirect laryngoscopy, cineesophagography, and lateral cervical spine films establish the diagnosis in most patients. While routine rigid endoscopy is potentially hazardous in view of the recognized risk of inadvertent pharyngoe

Proximal tibial osteophyte volumes are correlated spatially and with knee alignment: a quantitative analysis suggesting the influence of biochemical and mechanical factors in the development of osteophytes.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the differences and correlations in osteophyte volumes between and within proximal tibial compartments, and to assess the correlations between osteophyte volumes and the femorotibial angle. DESIGN: CT scans of 73 knees with predominantly medial femorotibial osteoarthritis (21 K/L2, 28 K/L3, 24 K/L4) were retrospectively analyzed using a new, reproducible method measuring total and subregional osteophyte volumes in the medial and lateral compartments. Non-parametric statistics was used for comparison and correlation analyses. RESULTS: Total osteophyte volumes were l

Vertebral artery stenosis from osteophyte: A systematic review and case series.

BACKGROUND: Rotational vertebral artery syndrome, also referred to as Bow Hunter's syndrome (BHS), manifests when the vertebral artery (VA) is compressed following head rotation. This compression is often caused by an osteophyte and may lead to symptoms of a posterior stroke. This systematic review aims to shed light on the current management strategies for BHS resulting from osteophytes. Additionally, we present two illustrative cases where the VA compression by an osteophyte was effectively resolved by complete resection of the problematic bone spur. METHODS: A literature search was conduct

Posttraumatic anterior cervical osteophyte and dysphagia: surgical report and literature review.

Degenerative changes in the cervical spine can produce osteophytes and other hypertrophic abnormalities. Asymptomatic osteophytes of the anterior margins of the cervical vertebrae may occur in 20-30% of the population. Occasionally, dysphagia or dysphonia may be caused by such cervical osteophytes pressing against the esophagus or trachea. Recently, the authors treated a patient with posttraumatic dysphagia and dysphonia secondary to osteophytic spurring of the anterior cervical spine. This 43-year-old man presented 2 years after sustaining a flexion/extension soft tissue injury to his cervica

Pathological Priors Inspired Network for Vertebral Osteophytes Recognition.

Automatic vertebral osteophyte recognition in Digital Radiography is of great importance for the early prediction of degenerative disease but is still a challenge because of the tiny size and high inter-class similarity between normal and osteophyte vertebrae. Meanwhile, common sampling strategies applied in Convolution Neural Network could cause detailed context loss. All of these could lead to an incorrect positioning predicament. In this paper, based on important pathological priors, we define a set of potential lesions of each vertebra and propose a novel Pathological Priors Inspired Netwo

Empirical Modelling Workflow for Resolution Invariant Assessment of Osteophytes.

OBJECTIVE: Traditional quantitative analysis of bone microstructure in micro-computed tomography (microCT) is dependent on animal scale and requires parametric tuning in new implementations. This study aims to develop an automated and resolution-invariant 3D image processing workflow for quantitative assessment of osteophytes. METHODS: In this workflow, cortical bone was segmented from microCT scans, and a 3D sphere-fitting transform was performed to obtain a thickness map, for which each voxel is assigned a thickness value corresponding to the size of the largest sphere containing the voxel

Identification of the skeletal progenitor cells forming osteophytes in osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Osteophytes are highly prevalent in osteoarthritis (OA) and are associated with pain and functional disability. These pathological outgrowths of cartilage and bone typically form at the junction of articular cartilage, periosteum and synovium. The aim of this study was to identify the cells forming osteophytes in OA. METHODS: Fluorescent genetic cell-labelling and tracing mouse models were induced with tamoxifen to switch on reporter expression, as appropriate, followed by surgery to induce destabilisation of the medial meniscus. Contributions of fluorescently labelled cells to os

Surgical treatment of anterior cervical osteophytes causing dysphagia.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia due to anterior cervical osteophytes is a rare condition. However, it can become serious enough to permanently impair the quality of life up to making normal food intake impossible. If conservative treatment fails, there is the option of surgical resection of the osteophytes. The objective of this study was to assess the outcomes of resections of anterior cervical osteophytes causing spondylogenic dysphagia, taking literature into consideration. METHOD: Resection of anterior cervical osteophytes using a standard anterior approach was performed in 14 consecutive patients wit
