OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether ostomy industry patent activity (PA) is associated with patient outcomes and healthcare costs.
METHODS: Two groups of ostomy pouch users based on manufacturer PA (low or high) were compared in terms of ostomy-related wear patterns, adverse events, and healthcare expenditure. Using Swedish registry data, all patients with newly formed stomas were divided between each group and were followed during a 2-year period (2011-12). Propensity score matching and parametric duration analysis were used to compare outcomes between patients of simil

Diseases or anomalies of the genitourinary or gastrointestinal tract often require removal of organs and creation of an artificial opening (stoma) to allow for elimination of urine or stool. Preoperative stoma site marking can affect quality of life (QoL). A descriptive study was conducted to assess the relationship between QoL and preoperative stoma site marking in adults with a permanent ostomy. Using convenience sampling methods, 230 eligible participants attending a United Ostomy Association of America conference were invited to complete a survey of demographics regarding age, gender, time

INTRODUCTION: Despite the shift toward liberal primary anastomosis in penetrating colon injuries, some surgeons recommend a protective diverting ostomy (DO) proximal to the anastomosis. This study evaluates the effect of DO on outcomes in patients undergoing colon resection and anastomosis following penetrating trauma.
METHODS: The TQIP database (2013-2018) was queried for penetrating colon injuries undergoing colectomy and anastomosis. Patients receiving DO were propensity matched to patients without diverting ostomy (woDO) (1:3). Outcomes were compared between groups.
RESULTS: After matchi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The clinical significance of early ostomy complications has been emphasized worldwide, and the current evidence concerning the impact of emergency or elective surgery on ostomy complications is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of elective and emergency colorectal surgery on early ostomy complications and the risk factors associated with specific complications.
METHODS: A mandatory colorectal recording system for consecutive ostomy patients between 2012 and 2020 was reviewed retrospectively. Patient socio-demographics, ostomy-related variables, and early

BACKGROUND: Abdominal wall deficiencies or weakness are a common complication of temporary ostomies, and incisional hernias frequently develop after colostomy or ileostomy takedown. The use of synthetic meshes to reinforce the abdominal wall has reduced hernia occurrence. Biologic meshes have also been used to enhance healing, particularly in contaminated conditions. Reinforced tissue matrices (RTMs), which include a biologic scaffold of native extracellular matrix and a synthetic component for added strength/durability, are designed to take advantage of aspects of both synthetic and biologic

Irritant contact dermatitis is a common peristomal skin complication. Due to the continuous irritation from intestinal fluids and faeces, the healing of this dermatitis is slow and the condition severely impairs patients' quality of life. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a modified insertable ostomy appliance in promoting healing and improving patient outcomes. A randomised controlled trial was conducted from January 2022 to December 2024 in a tertiary hospital. The enrolled patients, all diagnosed with irritant contact dermatitis, were randomly assigned to two groups. The control g

INTRODUCTION: Pre-operative stoma site marking is a strongly recommended practice for preventing complications and improving the health-related quality of life of intestinal stoma patients. Despite its benefits, this practice is not routinely implemented in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to increase the rate of pre-operative stoma site marking.
METHODS: This evidence implementation project was conducted in three hospitals at the Brandenburg Medical School, Germany. The project followed the seven-stage JBI audit and feedback process recommended in the JBI Evidence Implementat

BACKGROUND: Neuro-endoscopy offers solutions to several challenges encountered during intraventricular tumor surgery. In this case, technical nuances included performing a ventriculo-subarachnoid cisternostomy for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion, and the postoperative application of a tightly stitched dressing gauze secured with silk sutures for a few weeks to minimize the development of CSF collections (pseudomeningocele) beneath the skin. Such collections can exhibit high protein content due to slow absorption, complicating patient management.

Emergency surgeries are linked with increased morbidity and reduced life expectancy, often associated with low socioeconomic status, limited access to healthcare, and delayed hospital admissions. While the influence of socioeconomic status on elective surgery outcomes is well-established, its impact on emergency surgeries, including ostomy creation and closure, is less clear. This study aimed to explore how the pandemic and socioeconomic status affect emergency ostomy procedures, seeking to determine which has a greater effect. It emphasizes the importance of considering socioeconomic factors

Objective: Wound infection after intestinal ostomy closure is a very common postoperative complication. An alternative to primary wound suturing by single sutures or purse string sutures (PSS) is applying incisional negative pressure wound therapy (iNPWT). The aim of the following systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess and compare clinical outcomes in patients after PSS and iNPWT use. Approach: The aim of the study was to find relevant clinical data comparing outcomes of iNPWT and primary wound closure after intestinal ostomy closure. The search was conducted using the MEDLINE/PubMe

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are the most common congenital anomaly of the digestive tract. And colostomy should be performed as the first-stage procedure in neonates diagnosed with intermediate- or high-type ARMs. However, the most classic Pe˜na's colostomy still has some disadvantages such as complicated operation procedure, susceptibility to infection, a greater possibility of postoperative incision dehiscence, difficulty of nursing and large surgical trauma and incision scarring when closing the stoma. We aimed to explore the effectiveness of middle descending colon-double lu

BACKGROUND: To decrease morbidity caused by anastomotic leakages after a low anterior resection (LAR) with primary anastomosis, a diverting ostomy is often created. Reversal of a diverting ostomy is associated with morbidity, which may result in non-reversal, particularly in the elderly. This study aimed to describe the diverting ostomy-related outcomes in elderly patients with more advanced rectal cancer after LAR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All rectosigmoid and rectal cancer patients ≥70 years who underwent LAR with primary anastomosis between 2006 and 2019 in the Catharina Hospital (Eindhoven,

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of intestinal stricture is low for most conditions requiring a primary small bowel stoma in infants. Routine performance of contrast enemas (CE) prior to stoma closure adds cost and radiation exposure. We hypothesized that routine CE prior to ostomy reversal is not necessary in all infants, and sought to identify a subset of patients who may benefit from preoperative CE.
METHODS: Medical records of infants under age 1 (N=161) undergoing small bowel stoma reversal at a single institution between 2003 and 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. Student's T-test was used
