BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity is a significant risk factor for liver dysfunction and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in offspring, with oxidative stress playing a critical role in developmental programming. Understanding oxidative stress-mediated metabolic reprogramming during intrauterine overnutrition is crucial for developing MASLD preventive strategies.
METHODS: Female mice were fed a Western diet to induce obesity before mating. Biochemical detection and histopathological staining were employed to assess changes in lipid metabolism and liver fibrosis. Oxid

Maternal overnutrition results in programmed offspring obesity, mediated in part, by hyperphagia. This is remarkably similar to the effects of maternal undernutrition on offspring hyperphagia and obesity. In view of the marked differences in the energy environment of the over and under-nutrition exposures, we studied the expression of select epigenetic modifiers associated with energy imbalance including neurogenic factors and appetite/satiety neuropeptides which are indicative of neurogenic differentiation. HF offspring were exposed to maternal overnutrition (high fat diet; HF) during pregnan

Accelerated growth in early infancy has been associated with later cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. We investigated the influence of overnutrition during neonatal periods on the development of renal pathophysiological changes in adult offspring rats. Three or 10 male pups per mother were assigned to either the small litter (SL) or normal litter (NL) control groups during the first 21 days of life. The effects of early postnatal overnutrition on body weight, blood pressure and renal changes were determined at 3 and 6 months. Pups in the SL group weighed more than controls between 7 days a

Intrauterine overnutrition is associated with development of cardiovascular disease in adulthood although the underlying mechanism has not been precisely elucidated. This study evaluated the effects of maternal overnutrition on fetal cardiac morphometry and hypertrophy-related mRNA/protein expression. Multiparous ewes were fed either 150% of National Research Council (NRC) nutrient requirements (overfed group) or 100% of NRC requirements (control group) from 60 days before mating to Day 75 (D75) of gestation, when ewes were euthanized. Cardiac morphometry, histology and expression of Akt, fork

PURPOSE: Malnutrition, whether characterized by not enough or too much nutrient intake, is detrimental to the liver. We herein provide a narrative literature revision relative to hepatic disease occurrence in over or undernourished subjects, to shed light on the paradox where both sides of malnutrition lead to similar liver dysfunction and fat accumulation.
METHODS: Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for publications up to July 2020. Articles discussing the association between both chronic and acute liver pathology and malnutrition were evaluated together with studies reporti

The prevalence of childhood obesity has risen dramatically and coincident with this upsurge is a growth in adverse childhood psychological conditions including impulsivity, depression, anxiety and attention deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD). Due to confounds that exist when determining causality of childhood behavioral perturbations, controversy remains as to whether overnutrition and/or childhood obesity is important. Therefore, we examined juvenile mice to determine if biobehaviors were impacted by a short-term feeding (1-3wks) of a high-fat diet (HFD). After 1wk of a HFD feeding, mouse bu

Liver-gut communication is vital in fatty liver diseases, and gut microbes are the key regulators in maintaining liver homeostasis. Chronic alcohol abuse and persistent overnutrition create dysbiosis in gut ecology, which can contribute to fatty liver disease. In this review, we discuss the gut microbial compositional changes that occur in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases and how this gut microbial dysbiosis and its metabolic products are involved in fatty liver disease pathophysiology. We also summarize the new approaches related to gut microbes that might help in the diagnosis

Nutrition is crucial for the growth of children and adolescents. This study investigated multiple nutritional problems and influencing factors among 2423 students aged 6-17 years in Guizhou Province, using questionnaire surveys, physical examinations and blood tests. Multifactorial logistic and Poisson regression analyses were used to identify determinants of overnutrition and undernutrition. The results showed a distinct profile compared with national averages: wasting was more prevalent (9·6 %), while overweight (8·6 %) and obesity (5·0 %) were less common. Notably, hyperuricaemia (27·6 %) a

The aim of our study was to analyze the impact of early-life overnutrition and the exposure in adulthood to a cafeteria diet (CAF) on eating behavior and on the expression of key genes involved in the regulation of food intake. Male Wistar rats were raised in small (SL, 4 pups/dam) or normal litters (NL, 10 pups/dam), fed a control diet (CON) until postnatal day (PND) 90. Then, they received CON or CAF for 11 weeks (NL-CON, NL-CAF, SL-CON, SL-CAF; 12±2 rats/group). Body weight, food intake and behavioral tests (Elevated Plus Maze: EPM, Sensory-specific satiety: SSS) were assessed. At PND167, t

Ghrelin is a hormone synthesized by the stomach that acts in different tissues via a specific receptor (GHS-R1a), including hypothalamus and adipose tissue. For instance, recent reports have shown that ghrelin has a direct action on hypothalamic regulation of food intake mainly inducing an orexigenic effect. On the other hand, ghrelin also modulates energy stores and expenditure in the adipocytes. This dual action has suggested that this hormone may act as a link between the central nervous system and peripheral mechanisms. Furthermore, concerning nutritional disorders, it has been suggested t

Developmental orthopedic disease is a group of musculoskeletal disorders that occur in growing animals (most commonly fast growing, large breed dogs). Osteochondritis dissecans and canine hip dysplasia are the overwhelming majority of the diagnoses in those musculoskeletal problems with a possible nutritional-related etiology. Nutritional management alone will not completely control osteochondrosis or any of the developmental bone diseases. However, osteochondrosis and other developmental orthopedic diseases can be influenced during growth by feeding technique and nutrient profile. Dietary def

BACKGROUND: Peru faces a double burden of malnutrition, characterised by the co-existence of overnutrition and undernutrition. Although several fiscal policies have been implemented to address nutrition challenges, these have been designed and implemented separately, limiting their potential for synergistic impact. This paper investigates the potential impact of retrofitting unhealthy food and beverage taxation for 'double-duty' action by allocating revenues towards welfare transfers and fruit and vegetable subsidies on overweight and stunting in Peru.

Background and objectives Weight-for-height (WHZ) and body mass index (BMI)-for-age (BAZ) are commonly used to assess child overnutrition but have limitations: they conflate skeletal growth with body weight, correlate with height, and inadequately distinguish fat from lean mass, particularly during puberty. This study proposes an India-specific generalised body mass index (gBMI), an age- and sex-specific power-type index adapted from Benn's concept, to better capture adiposity. Methods Exponent parameters for gBMI were estimated using healthy-child data, selected by WHO selection criteria, fro

Much has been written about the role of diet and risk for Crohn's disease (CD). However, the evidence is contradictory. Recent evidence has pointed to fiber playing an important role along with the possibility that dietary fat and overnutrition also have a role. Diet has a clearer place in disease modification, with some diets used in the treatment of CD. The lack of clarity stems from a poor understanding of the mechanisms underlying the relationship between diet and CD. Gut permeability is likely to play a key role in the risk for CD. Mechanisms whereby diet can affect gut permeability, incl
