Deposition of calcium oxalate in the periodontium with accompanying bone loss and tooth resorption, occurred in a 55-year-old woman on long-term renal dialysis for end-stage renal disease. These deposits were birefringent upon examination with polarized light. Scanning electron microscopy of the deposits revealed clusters of sharply angular oblong and needlelike crystals. Microincineration followed by staining with alizarin red S was positive for calcium oxalate. X-ray diffraction studies of the crystals in the tissue specimen revealed a pattern identical to that of commercially prepared calci

Rana esculenta tadpoles that are fed spinach develop an oxalic calculogenesis. The addition of cholestyramine, orthophosphate, citrate, allopurinol and tungstate to the tank water prevented calculi formation while succinimide, magnesium oxide, hydrochlorothiazide and tetracycline were ineffective. Methylene blue proved lethal to tadpoles, and its anti-lithogenic activity could not be assessed. These findings, except for the non-effectiveness of magnesium oxide, are in agreement with both the theoretical expectations and the results obtained in other experimental models. Calcium oxalate nephropathy is a rare condition with both primary and secondary causes. Primary hyperoxaluria, an inherited disorder, leads to liver oxalate overproduction, whereas secondary hyperoxaluria, or enteric hyperoxaluria, may be multifactorial and typically occurs during adulthood, with etiologies including increased dietary intake of oxalate, destruction of the microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract that break down oxalate, and malabsorptive disorders that increase serum oxalate levels. Calcium oxalate crystal deposition can cause irreversible kidney injury necessitating kidney re

Electro-organic reduction reactions are canonically carried out at a cathode at which a significant negative potential is applied. Specifically, at carbon electrodes, aryl bromides and chlorides undergo heterogeneous reduction in organic solvents at potentials more negative than -2 V vs E0' for the Fc/Fc+ couple (Fc = ferrocene). To decrease the overpotential for reduction reactions, homogeneous or heterogeneous electrocatalysis strategies are often employed. Here, we present an electrochemical method to reduce aryl bromides and chlorides that is initiated by an oxidation reaction at very mild

INTRODUCTION: Oxalate nephropathy, characterized by calcium oxalate crystal deposition in renal tissue, represents an underrecognized etiology of acute and chronic kidney injury. Secondary hyperoxaluria can emerge from diverse pathogenetic mechanisms, including excessive oxalate precursor intake, augmented intestinal absorption, or iatrogenic interventions. The therapeutic potential of glucocorticoids in managing this condition remains incompletely elucidated.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old man with no significant prior medical history developed acute kidney injury (AKI), manifesting as a p

BACKGROUND: To assess whether 24-h urine oxalate (UOx) excretion is a risk factor for incident chronic kidney disease (CKD).
METHODS: This longitudinal observational USA-based study included 426 896 individuals aged ≥18 years with no CKD at baseline and with at least one UOx, and at least 6 months of baseline and 6 months of follow-up data. Of these, 11 239 (2.6%) had an underlying malabsorptive condition. Incident CKD, defined by relevant International Classification of Diseases codes, was identified from a multi-source data cloud containing individual-level healthcare claims and electronic

Lanthanides (Ln) from the f-blocks of the periodic table have gained significant interest due to their unique characteristics, including magnetism, photoluminescence, and catalysis. In this study, a series of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks [Ln-MOFs, Ln = Eu(III), Tb(III), Nd(III), Er(III), Ho(III), Gd(III), Pr(III), and Dy(III)] were constructed based on oxalic acid and lanthanide metals as the building blocks. These MOFs were comprehensively characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, th

Objective: To elucidate the actual circumstances of damage caused by Japanese Alocasia (A) odora. Materials and Methods: We investigated cases in Japan from our own hospital in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture as well as published reports. Results: A. dorais found in western Japan, and plants of the Alocasia genus are cultivated often. A. odora is frequently associated with food poisoning because its aboveground parts resemble those of Satoimo (Colocasia esculenta). Moreover, A. odora contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause poisoning symptoms, such as oral pain, nausea,

Oxalate is a metabolic end-product whose systemic concentrations are highly variable among individuals. Genetic (primary hyperoxaluria) and non-genetic (e.g., diet, microbiota, renal and metabolic disease) reasons underlie elevated plasma concentrations and tissue accumulation of oxalate, which is toxic to the body. A classic example is the triad of primary hyperoxaluria, nephrolithiasis, and kidney injury. Lessons learned from this example suggest further investigation of other putative factors associated with oxalate dysmetabolism, namely the identification of precursors (glyoxylate, aromati

Primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) is a rare disease due to alanine glyoxylate aminotransferase enzyme deficiency caused by mutations in AGXT gene. Increased oxalate causes crystalline deposits in the eye particularly in conjunctiva, cornea, iris, retina, and choroid. A 20-month-old boy was referred with a diagnosis of infantile PH1. There were numerous yellowish crystalline deposits at the posterior pole and hyperpigmented lesions were detected around the macula. Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) revealed dome-shaped retinal pigment epithelium elevations, subretina

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) is a multisystemic metabolic disorder caused by an excessive production of oxalate by the liver. The majority of patients presenting in early infancy have end-stage renal disease (ESRD). While awaiting the results of sRNAi trials, the current standard treatment is combined liver-kidney transplantation. Recently, Stiripentol has been reported as a promising drug in the treatment of primary hyperoxaluria by reducing urinary oxalate (UOx). Stiripentol is an anti-convulsive drug used in the treatment of children suffering from Dravet syndrome. It caus

Mammary malignancies are radiologically detected by presence of masses, architectural distortions or microcalcifications. Unlike calcium hydroxyapatite, calcium oxalate (CaOx) deposits have been almost exclusively associated with benign mammary processes. The etiology and mechanism of mammary CaOx deposition remains poorly understood, and the original studies elucidating its histopathologic correlation are dated several decades ago. We reviewed radiopathologic findings of breast biopsies and excisions to re-examine the clinicopathologic significance of CaOx deposits and to ascertain potential

IMPORTANCE: Oxalate is a potentially toxic terminal metabolite that is eliminated primarily by the kidneys. Oxalate nephropathy is a well-known complication of rare genetic disorders and enteric hyperoxaluria, but oxalate has not been investigated as a potential contributor to more common forms of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether urinary oxalate excretion is a risk factor for more rapid progression of CKD toward kidney failure.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study assessed 3123 participants with stages 2 to 4 CKD who enrolled in the Chron
