Early onset of nasopharyngeal cancer in Asian/Pacific Islander Americans revealed by age-specific analysis.

PURPOSE: Incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer is substantially higher in Asian/Pacific Islanders (APIs) than other racial groups. Examining age-specific incidence patterns by racial group and histology could inform disease etiology. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2000 through 2019 from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program to compare age-specific incidence rates of nasopharyngeal cancer in non-Hispanic (NH) Blacks, NH APIs, and Hispanics to NH Whites using incidence rate ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: NH APIs showed the

The role of health promotion in the development of ear and hearing health services in the Pacific Islands : A literature review.

The Pacific Islands have among the highest rates of ear disease and hearing loss in the world. Ear and hearing health services are limited in this region; however, a significant proportion of avoidable hearing loss and disability may be addressed through public health promotion activities. In order to develop appropriate hearing health education campaigns and promotion initiatives, knowledge and attitude studies among target population groups are vital. This review aimed to summarize the research literature on knowledge and attitude to ear disease and hearing loss in the Pacific Islands in ord

Use of serum and blood samples on filter paper to improve the surveillance of Dengue in Pacific Island Countries.

BACKGROUND: In Pacific Island Countries (PICs) the epidemiology of dengue is characterized by long-term transmission of a single dengue virus (DENV) serotype. The emergence of a new serotype in one island country often indicates major outbreaks with this serotype will follow in other PICs. OBJECTIVES: Filter paper (FP) cards on which whole blood or serum from dengue suspected patients had been dried was evaluated as a method for transportation of this material by standard mail delivery throughout the Pacific. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-two FP-dried whole blood samples collected from patients in Ne

Blood mercury reporting in NHANES: identifying Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and multiracial groups.

INTRODUCTION: Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans are a potentially high-risk group for dietary exposure to methylmercury through fish consumption. However, blood mercury levels in this group have not been identified in recent reports of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 1999-2002. METHODS: We used NHANES data from 1999-2002 to obtain population estimates of blood mercury levels among women of childbearing age classified as belonging to the "other" racial/ethnic group (Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and multiracial; n = 140). Comparative clinical and physiological features of Maori, Pacific Islanders and Europeans with sleep related breathing disorders.

UNLABELLED: Recent studies have suggested that there is a familial association of sleep apnoea syndrome and that this is not entirely explained by inheritance of known risk factors. Maori (M) and Pacific Islanders (PI) have many of the body habitus features associated with sleep apnoea and therefore might be expected to exhibit more severe disease than Europeans (E). OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical and physiological characteristics of the different ethnic groups and to determine if race was an independent predictor of severity of sleep apnoea. METHODOLOGY: A prospective evaluation of pati

Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Patients with Fibromyalgia: Insights into BMI, Pain, and Comorbidities in a Multiethnic Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (NHPI) are significantly underrepresented in fibromyalgia literature. This study aims to characterize the clinical presentation of fibromyalgia across ethnoracial groups to identify potential disparities in symptoms and comorbidities. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at a single-center clinic involving 200 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Patients were stratified by race: Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Asian, and White. Clinical variables including Body Mass Index (BMI), pain severity, exercise frequency, and comorb

Hypoxic Burden from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is Increased in Pacific Islanders with distinct Pathophysiological Traits.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is common in Pacific Islanders; however, its pathophysiological mechanisms are unknown. We compared OSA severity and endotypes between Pacific Islanders and Caucasians. METHODS: Retrospective polysomnography data were analysed using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) to balance age, sex, and BMI. Sleep stage endotypes were derived using validated non-invasive methods. Generalised regression models (GLMs) were used to estimate population-average differences and rank-based tests used as sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: 42 Pacific Is

Qualitative risk assessment of Japanese encephalitis virus introduction and transmission in Pacific Island countries and territories.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in Australia raises questions about transmission potential across neighbouring Pacific Island countries and territories (PICs), where surveillance infrastructure and diagnostic capacity are limited. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a qualitative risk assessment of 22 PICs structured around three components: (1) 'release assessment', evaluating JEV introduction pathways based on geographic proximity, migratory waterbird flyway connectivity, and windborne mosquito dispersal potential; (2) 'exposure assessment', evaluating ecological transm

Critical theory and cultural competency in medical QI projects: lessons from Pacific Islander communities.

This reflection explores the transformative power of critical theory through a quality improvement (QI) project creating culturally relevant dietary resources for Pacific Islander communities in Washington State, USA. Food injustice and lack of food sovereignty are examined as manifestations of modern-day colonialism perpetuated by capitalist-driven social structures. The methodology employed critical reflection, defined as the process of examining assumptions and power relations that shape practice, central to critical theory. Iterative group discussions aimed to understand the impact of indi

Spatial Risk Factors of Vector-Borne Diseases in Pacific Island Countries and Territories: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesise spatially relevant environmental, demographic, and socio-economic factors associated with vector-borne diseases (VBDs) in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), a region particularly vulnerable due to its ecological and climate diversity. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted in March 2025 with no time restrictions, yielding 3008 records. After applying the inclusion criteria, 21 studies were selected for analysis. Environmental factors such as temperature, precipitation, and land cover were consi

Prehospital Assaults Against Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders During COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-Asian sentiment increased when the SARS-CoV-2 virus reached the United States in 2020. Trends in national assaults occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community were evaluated. METHODS: Patients treated for assaults by emergency medical services between January 2019 and December 2021 were extracted from ImageTrend Collaborate, a national database. Multivariable logistic regression models, adjusting for age, sex, and urbanicity, were used to compare assault rates overall and in the AANHPI population. R

Prevalence of cardiovascular disease among Asian, Pacific Islander and multi-race populations in Hawai'i and California.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the US. CVD incidence is influenced by many demographic, clinical, cultural, and psychosocial factors, including race and ethnicity. Despite recent research, there remain limitations on understanding CVD health among Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs), particularly some subgroups and multi-racial populations. Combining diverse API populations into one study group and difficulties in defining API subpopulations and multi-race individuals have hampered efforts to identify and address health disparities in these growi

Novel peeling skin condition in neonatal Pacific walruses, Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska, USA.

We describe here a novel peeling skin condition (PSC) in 2 neonatal Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus subsp. divergens). Macroscopically, calves had various degrees of peeling skin exacerbated by mechanical trauma. Lesions occurred in areas subject to friction: ventrum, fore- and hindflippers, and associated joints. Histopathologic features included pseudocarcinomatous epithelial hyperplasia with orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis. Bacterial cocci were present within the stratum corneum. A few intraepidermal clefts were present. Inflammation, epidermolysis, and vasculopathies were not observed. P

Challenging Aspects to Precise Health Strategies in Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders Using Statins.

Cardiometabolic disorders (CD), including cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and obesity, are the leading cause of health concern in the United States (U.S.), disproportionately affecting indigenous populations such a Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI). Dyslipidemia, a prevalent risk factor for the development and progression of CVD, is more prone to occur in NHOPI than other populations in the U.S. High-intensity statin therapy to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is associated with the prevention of CVD events. However, significant side-effects, such as muscle

The disproportionately large contribution of the Māori and Pacific Islander community to the healthcare burden of gout in Western Sydney.

BACKGROUND: Gout is a common chronic inflammatory disorder due to monosodium urate deposition, which results in severe inflammatory arthritis. It is particularly common in those of Māori or Pacific Islander heritage. There is a significant number of this at-risk ethnic group in western Sydney. AIMS: To determine the healthcare burden of gout in Western Sydney. METHODS: We characterised patients managed in the emergency departments (EDs) of the four Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) hospitals and those admitted for gout as the primary or secondary diagnosis from 1 January 2017 to 3

Cancer Mortality Disparities among Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Populations in California.

BACKGROUND: Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) are the fastest growing minority in the United States. Cancer is the leading cause of death for AANHPIs, despite relatively lower cancer morbidity and mortality. Their recent demographic growth facilitates a detailed identification of AANHPI populations with higher cancer risk. METHODS: Age-adjusted, sex-stratified, site-specific cancer mortality rates from California for 2012 to 2017 were computed for AANHPI groups: Chinese, Filipino, South Asian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Southeast Asian (i.e., Cambodian, Hmong, L

The Missing Link: A Case of Plummer-Vinson Syndrome in a Young Pacific-Islander Woman With Helicobacter Pylori.

Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS), the triad of dysphagia, iron-deficiency anemia (IDA), and esophageal webs, is a relatively rare disease entity that is mostly observed in the Caucasian populations of Scandinavia and North America. As these regions have become more developed with improved nutrition, PVS is now more commonly seen in the developing regions of the world. We present the case of a 29-year-old Pacific-islander woman who presented with progressive dysphagia and IDA and was found to have an esophageal web and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis on upper endoscopy. She improved with
