Wild isolates of the egg-parasitic fungi Paecilomyces lilacinus and Verticillium chlamydosporium, obtained from the organic environment of Durg, Chhattisgarh, India, were subjected to screening for in vitro growth using different media types, range of incubation temperature and pH, and their predatory activity to the eggs of Fasciola gigantica and Gigantocotyle explanatum. Maximum growth of P. lilacinus was obtained in corn-meal agar compared to any other media types. The preferred medium for growth of V. chlamydosporium was corn-meal agar, followed by potato-dextrose agar. After initial growt

The objective of this study was to determine if plasticized polyvinyl chloride film would support the growth of any of nine species of fungi. The film was suspended in distilled water with no nutrients or with glucose or ammonium sulfate. Spores of each of the test species were inoculated into the suspension medium, and the mixture was incubated at 30 degrees C for up to 18 weeks. Most species were found to be capable of utilizing the film for carbon or nitrogen when the other nutrient was supplied. Only two species, Aspergillus fischeri and Paecilomyces sp., were found to be capable of utiliz

Hyalohyphomycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by a variety of environmental, hyaline (i.e., non-pigmented) molds and is often associated with skin and/or systemic manifestations in immuncompromised individuals. Herein, we describe a case of a 73-year-old immunocompetent individual who recently immigrated from Cambodia with cutaneous hyalohyphomycosis caused by Purpureocillium lilacinum. The patient presented with pruritic, pink-to-violaceous, linear plaques and papules on the right dorsal forearm that had been present for 2-3 years. Biopsy showed superficial granulomatous derma

Introduction:Purpureocillium lilacinum (formerly Paecilomyces lilacinus) is an emerging, saprophytic fungus known to cause severe, treatment-refractory ocular infections. It is notoriously clinically resistant to several common antifungal agents, including amphotericin B. Risk factors for Purpureocillium lilacinum (P. lilacinum) keratitis include contact lens wear, ocular trauma, and local or systemic immunosuppression. Case Presentation: We describe the clinical course of a 70-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus and a history of long-term soft contact lens use who presented with a rig

Paecilomyces lilacinus is a fungal pathogen which is generally resistant to amphotericin B and certain other antifungals and is an uncommon cause of devastating fungal keratitis. In the present studies, we evaluated topical voriconazole as therapy for P. lilacinus keratitis in rabbits. Thirty eyes of 15 rabbits were studied. In five animals, the uninfected left eye was treated twice daily with voriconazole (drug control, uninfected eye). In these same animals, the right eye was infected with P. lilacinus but not treated with voriconazole (infection control eye). By day 5, the infection control

Hyalohyphomycosis is an unusual opportunistic mycotic infection where the tissue morphology of the causative organism is mycelial. Etiological agents, which are not responsible for the otherwise-named infections like aspergillosis, are the species of non-dematiaceous hyaline hyphomycetes including Penicillium, Paecilomyces, Acremonium (formerly known Cephalosporium), Beauveria, Fusarium, and Scopulariopsis. Several cases of Acremonium infection have been described in immunocompromised patients; however it can cause invasive disease in an immunocompetent person very rarely. Optimum therapy of A

Daqu, a representative solid-state fermentation product, produces saccharifying enzymes to degrade sorghum starch into fermentable sugars for ethanol synthesis. Spatial heterogeneity in Daqu drives community assembly. However, its regulatory role in enzyme-driven saccharification remains unclear. By integrating metagenomics and PacBio full-length sequencing, this study investigated how microenvironmental gradients across distinct Daqu layers (QP (surface layer), HQ (middle layer), QX (center layer)) shape saccharifying microbiota and activity. Saccharifying activity exhibited a declining surfa

Thirty-six piglets (15 days old) were inoculated with Echinococcus according to the authors' procedure. Hepatic hydatid cyst growth in the piglets was ultrasonographically monitored 3 months after inoculation. In 15 piglets, the size of hepatic hydatid cysts was as high as 6.5 x 8.5 cm 5 months after infection. The cavity of larvocystic fibrous capsule was eliminated, by inverting the resection margins inward with interrupted catgut sutures. For content aspiration, the cystic bed was occasionally drained by a polyvinyl chloride tube with two side holes, which was brought outward through an ind

Flavoenzymes of the 4-phenol oxidoreductase family are versatile biocatalysts that catalyze the oxidation of a wide variety of phenol derivatives to alcohols, aldehydes, ketones or alkenes. The promiscuous FAD-dependent vanillyl alcohol oxidases from Penicillium simplicissimum (PsVAO) and Diplodia corticola (DcVAO) have been described to catalyze the oxidative deamination of p-hydroxybenzylamines, giving rise to valuable flavor compounds, but starting from p-alkyl substituted phenols, the ketones are usually not accessible as these oxidases preferably stop at chiral benzylic alcohols. Here we

Invasive fungal disease (IFD) due to moulds other than Aspergillus is a significant cause of mortality in patients with malignancies or post haemopoietic stem cell transplantation. The current guidelines focus on the diagnosis and management of the common non-Aspergillus moulds (NAM), such as Mucorales, Scedosporium species (spp.), Lomentospora prolificans and Fusarium spp. Rare but emerging NAM including Paecilomyces variotii, Purpureocillium lilacinum and Scopulariopsis spp. are also reviewed. Culture and histological examination of tissue biopsy specimens remain the mainstay of diagnosis, b

INTRODUCTION: Invasive fungal infections caused by Fusarium and other rare hyalohyphomycetes, such as Scopulariopsis and Paecilomyces species, can lead to devastating localized and disseminated infections in vulnerable patient populations. Currently employed antifungal agents exhibit limited effectiveness for these molds. Over the past few years, the approval of new antifungals and the ongoing development of others in clinical trials offer promising new therapeutic options for treating these infections.
AREAS COVERED: In this review, utilizing PubMed literature review, we delve into selected

Schistosomiasis poses a serious threat to human health and remains a major tropical and parasitic disease in more than 70 countries. Praziquantel (PZQ) has been the primary treatment for schistosomiasis for nearly 4 decades. However, its efficacy against migratory-stage schistosomula is limited. Radicicol (RAD), a β-resorcylic acid lactone derived from Paecilomyces sp. strain SC0924, was investigated as an alternative treatment for Schistosoma japonicumIn vitro tests showed that within 72 h, RAD (10 μmol/liter) completely killed schistosomula of both skin and liver stages with an efficacy sign

Farmer's lung is rare in Australia whereas allergic alveolitis due to domestic fungal exposure ("domestic allergic alveolitis") is common. However there has been no systematic analysis of the fungi responsible for domestic allergic alveolitis in Australia. The aim of this study was to determine the sources and types of fungi that cause this type of alveolitis in Australia. Twelve subjects with recently diagnosed, biopsy proved, alveolitis thought on clinical grounds to be due to domestic fungal exposure were studied. The houses of all subjects were inspected, and fungal samples were taken. All

The extragent used to prepare a Latrodectus mactans hydrocarbon extract is a multicomponent system composed of alkanes, alkenes, and arenes. More than 100 compounds were identified in the hydrocarbon extract (petroleum). The petroleum matrix of Latrodectus mactans was first obtained to manufacture homeopathic remedies. The authors could prepare the first Russian homeopathic medicine from Latrodectus mactans, which proved to be effective in treating canine eclampsia. Canine experiments provide a rationale for the authors' choice as the only homeopathic remedy among thousand known drugs to treat

Modern industry, reliant on petroleum-derived synthetic emulsifiers, faces an urgent need for more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions. In this context, bioemulsifiers emerge as a powerful alternative, demonstrating superior emulsifying and stabilizing properties that can lead to cleaner and safer industrial processes. This study investigated the bioemulsifier production of eighteen filamentous fungal isolates, including strains of Aspergillus, Paecilomyces, and Trichoderma, sourced from a petroleum waste landfill. All isolates effectively emulsified motor oil (E24 > 90%) and pr

BACKGROUND: Thorn injuries are common in the desert Southwest; however, the frequency and microbiology of thorn-associated infections have not been systematically described. Most information comes from case reports describing infections from atypical or environmental microorganisms. Our aim was to summarize the spectrum of thorn-associated infections.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of electronic health records for patients presenting to our institution from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2014 for treatment of thorn-associated injuries and then focused on the patients with cultu

Dematiaceous fungi are a diverse group of "darkly" pigmented fungi, which contain melanin in their cell walls and are commonly found in soil worldwide. Although morphology and histochemical stains may aid identification in tissue sections, these means for species identification are not specific. In-situ hybridization (ISH) for abundant fungal rRNA sequences may provide a means for detecting dematiaceous fungi. In this study, a 24-base synthetic biotin-labeled oligonucleotide probe targeting rRNA sequences of a variety of dematiaceous fungi was developed. This probe was tested on a cohort of 29
