A chimpanzee rhadinovirus sequence related to Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus 8: increased detection after HIV-1 infection in the absence of disease.

OBJECTIVE: To look for a virus related to Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) or human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) in chimpanzees and to investigate phylogenetic and biological similarities to KSHV. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) DNA samples from chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) were screened with newly designed consensus oligonucleotide primers for the DNA polymerase gene of KSHV-related gamma2-herpesviruses (rhadinoviruses). Samples from HIV-1-infected and -uninfected chimpanzees were screened with virus-specific primers. Antibodies to KSHV structural and lat

Preliminary insights into the impact of dietary starch on the ciliate, Neobalantidium coli, in captive chimpanzees.

Infections caused by the intestinal ciliate Neobalantidium coli are asymptomatic in most hosts. In humans and captive African great apes clinical infections occasionally occur, manifested mainly by dysentery; however, factors responsible for development of clinical balantidiasis have not been fully clarified. We studied the effect of dietary starch on the intensities of infection by N. coli in two groups of captive chimpanzees. Adult chimpanzees infected by N. coli from the Hodonín Zoo and from the Brno Zoo, Czech Republic, were fed with a high starch diet (HSD) (average 14.7% of starch) for 1

Large-scale production of Plasmodium vivax sporozoites.

Mass-scale production of Plasmodium vivax sporozoites in Anopheles stephensi was achieved using the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) as a source of infective blood. Membrane feeding was as successful as feeding mosquitoes directly on the animal so long as the time between drawing the blood and feeding was restricted to 45 min. Longer delays such as 2-3 h resulted in loss of infectivity in terms of oocyst production. The selected strain of A. stephensi was highly susceptible to P. vivax (Chesson strain). A strain of A. stephensi relatively refractory to P. falciparum showed no cross-refractoriness

Infection of mosquitoes with Plasmodium vivax from chimpanzees using membrane feeding.

Six splenectomized chimpanzees were infected with the Chesson or the North Korean strains of Plasmodium vivax. Heparinized blood taken from the animals was fed to approximately 45,000 mosquitoes using parafilm membranes. High-level mosquito infections were obtained with the blood from 4 animals. One animal infected mosquitoes only at a very low level. The other chimpanzee failed to produce a parasitemia high enough to warrant mosquito feeding.

Multisite analysis of infant corpse carrying in Pan reveals maternal attachment and death context as explanations of carrying duration.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying non-human primate death-related behaviours is essential for reconstructing the evolution of human responses to death and death-related cognition. Infant corpse carrying is widely observed in chimpanzees and bonobos, yet its underlying mechanisms remain debated. Analysing 83 published cases across multiple sites using Bayesian mixed-effects models, we found strong support that infant corpse carrying duration varies with cause of death, infant age at death and site-level interbirth intervals. A less robust association of temperature with carrying duration

The adaptive significance of human scleral brightness: an experimental study.

Homogeneously depigmented sclerae have long been proposed to be uniquely human-an adaptation to enable cooperative behaviour by facilitating interpersonal coordination through gaze following. However, recent evidence has shown that deeply pigmented sclerae also afford gaze following if surrounding a bright iris. Furthermore, while current scleral depigmentation is clearly adaptive in modern humans, it is less clear how the evolutionarily intermediate stages of scleral pigmentation may have been adaptive. In sum, it is unclear why scleral depigmentation became the norm in humans, while not so i

Yaws Disease Caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue in Wild Chimpanzee, Guinea, 2019.

Yaws-like lesions are widely reported in wild African great apes, yet the causative agent has not been confirmed in affected animals. We describe yaws-like lesions in a wild chimpanzee in Guinea for which we demonstrate infection with Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue. Assessing the conservation implications of this pathogen requires further research.

First molar eruption, weaning, and life history in living wild chimpanzees.

Understanding dental development in chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, is of fundamental importance for reconstructing the evolution of human development. Most early hominin species are believed to show rapid ape-like patterns of development, implying that a prolonged modern human childhood evolved quite recently. However, chimpanzee developmental standards are uncertain because they have never been based on living wild individuals. Furthermore, although it is well established that first molar tooth emergence (movement into the mouth) is correlated with the scheduling of growth and rep

Prevalence of muzzle-rubbing and hand-rubbing behavior in wild chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania.

In 1998, four chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, were observed wiping their mouths with non-detached leaves or stalks of grass, or rubbing their mouths with a tree trunk or branch, especially while eating lemons. The number of mouth-wiping/rubbing individuals increased to 18 in 1999. By 2005, 29 chimpanzees were documented wiping/rubbing their muzzles in this way. Although it is difficult to determine whether the chimpanzees acquired this behavior as a result of trial and error or social learning, the fact that chimpanzees at other sites perform this behavior with det

Examination of Fe and Cu Isotope Variation in Great Apes Using an Optimized Protocol.

RATIONALE: Iron deficiency plagues reproductive-aged women across the world, and blood loss during menstruation is proposed as the driving force. To assess if other factors related to reproduction influence Fe and Cu isotope variation in females, we measured Fe and Cu isotope compositions in the bones of chimpanzees and bonobos. METHODS: To do this, we optimize the protocol for isolating Fe and Cu (and Zn) from phosphate-rich skeletal materials for further analysis via MC-ICP-MS. Then, we address possible Fe and Cu variation sources in non-menstruating apes (n = 26, of which the sex of 10 was

The deciduous dentition of Griphopithecus alpani from Paşalar, Turkey.

Seventy-four hominoid primary teeth have been recovered from the middle Miocene site of Paşalar, Turkey, constituting the largest sample of deciduous teeth for any species of fossil ape. Morphological features that characterize the permanent teeth of Griphopithecus alpani from the site have also been identified in some of these deciduous teeth, including a lingual pillar on the di(1)s. These features plus the overwhelming preponderance of G. alpani permanent teeth at the site suggest that all of the deciduous teeth belong to this species. Contrary to the situation in the permanent teeth, nothi

Building an inner sanctuary: complex PTSD in chimpanzees.

Through the analysis of case studies of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) in residence at a sanctuary, who previously sustained prolonged captivity and biomedical experimentation, we illustrate how human psychological models of diagnosis and treatment might be approached in great apes. This study reflects growing attention to ethical, scientific, and practical problems associated with psychological well-being of animals. The analysis concludes that a diagnosis of Complex PTSD in chimpanzees is consistent with descriptions of trauma-induced symptoms as described by the DSM-IV and human

The external genitalia of female pygmy chimpanzees.

The external genitalia of four adult female pygmy chimpanzees (Pan paniscus) were examined during a 2-year period. It was found that the labia majora are retained in adults of this species and that, when tumescent, the labia minora effectively relocate the frenulum and clitoris so that they point anteriorly between the thighs. When detumescent, the configuration of the labia minora and clitoris resembles that of immature common chimpanzees (P. troglodytes). It is suggested that the simple, structural relocation of the clitoris from the normal condition noted in adult P. troglodytes makes possi

Reconsidering Whether Knuckle-Walking Gave Rise to Bipedalism in Light of the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis.

Paleoanthropologists debate whether the common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans moved terrestrially by knuckle-walking or in some other manner preadapted for bipedalism. The answer to this question would shed light on the emergence of one of the most definitive features of early hominins-habitual terrestrial bipedalism. Comparative morphological studies of apes, australopithecines, and modern humans, and investigations of the few putative earliest hominins have failed to resolve this issue. Here, the knuckle-walking question is approached by comparing the ontogenetic development of locomotor

High diversity and sharing of strongylid nematodes in humans and great apes co-habiting an unprotected area in Cameroon.

Rapid increases in human populations and environmental changes of past decades have led to changes in rates of contact and spatial overlap with wildlife. Together with other historical, social and environmental processes, this has significantly contributed to pathogen transmission in both directions, especially between humans and non-human primates, whose close phylogenetic relationship facilitates cross-infections. Using high-throughput amplicon sequencing, we studied strongylid communities in sympatric western lowland gorillas, central chimpanzees and humans co-occurring in an unprotected ar

Chimpanzee histology and functional brain imaging show that the paracingulate sulcus is not human-specific.

The paracingulate sulcus -PCGS- has been considered for a long time to be specific to the human brain. Its presence/absence has been discussed in relation to interindividual variability of personality traits and cognitive abilities. Recently, a putative PCGS has been observed in chimpanzee brains. To demonstrate that this newly discovered sulcus is the homologue of the PCGS in the human brain, we analyzed cytoarchitectonic and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data in chimpanzee brains which did or did not display a PCGS. The results show that the organization of the mid-cing

The role of the placenta in the initiation of spiral artery remodelling in an early pregnant chimpanzee uterus.

INTRODUCTION: In this study we evaluated the full extent of placental bed changes (centre to periphery) in a pregnant chimpanzee uterus, kept at the Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium. According to placental size the specimen was equivalent to an 8 weeks pregnant human uterus. METHODS: Histological sections from central to peripheral tissue blocks of the placental bed were stained to reveal the presence of trophoblast, endothelium, vascular smooth muscle and elastic laminae. As an indicator for early arterial remodelling, we evaluated endothelial nuclear rounding and subendothelia

Dental development in Homo naledi.

Humans' prolonged somatic development and life history are unique among primates, yet their evolutionary origins remain unclear. Dental development has been used as a proxy to reconstruct life history evolution in the hominin clade and indicates a recent emergence of the human developmental pattern. Here, we analyse tooth formation and eruption in two developing dentitions of Homo naledi, a late-surviving, morphologically mosaic hominin species. Deciduous dental development is more similar to humans than to chimpanzees, probably reflecting hominin symplesiomorphy rather than bearing life histo
