A rabbit antiserum raised against pancreatic extracts of newborn Syrian hamsters was used in a histological study of pancreas development. Pancreatic enzyme extracts have been used for several decades to decrease maldigestion of macro- and micronutrients due to pancreatic insufficiency and to alleviate various abdominal symptoms, including the pain of alcohol-induced chronic pancreatitis and distal intestinal obstruction. Decreasing nutrient maldigestion and malabsorption in pancreatic insufficiency is of additional critical importance because improvement in nutritional status reduces morbidity and mortality. Acromegaly due to ectopic production of growth hormone releasing hormone (GH-RH) by a tumor is rare, but several cases have been described after isolation and identification of GH-RH from a pancreatic tumor. The authors observed a patient with acromegaly caused by a pancreatic tumor in whom GH-RH production was demonstrated by measurements of GH-RH in peripheral plasma, tumor veins, tumor extracts and immunohistochemical identification. Endocrinological, histological and ultrastructural results are discussed. The problem of potential malignancy is investigated in the light of DNA measurements.

Stevia rebaudiana is an important source of steviol glycosides with antidiabetic properties. This study evaluated the effects of abiotic elicitors, including foliar application of 5% ethanol and root-zone excess iron (150 mg/L Fe; +Fe), on stevioside accumulation and the biological activity of leaf extracts in pancreatic β-cells.
