BACKGROUND: The added value of cardiac computed tomography (CT) with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) for evaluating mechanical aortic valve (AV) dysfunction has not yet been investigated. The purposes of this study were to investigate the added value of cardiac CT for evaluation of mechanical AVs and diagnoses of pannus compared to TEE, with surgical findings of redo-aortic valve replacement (AVR) used as a standard reference.
METHODS: 25 patients who underwent redo-AVR due to mechanical AV dysfunction and cardiac CT before redo-AVR were included. The presence of pannus, encroachment r

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To report the influence of histological features of corneal surface pannus following ocular surface burn on the outcome of cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET).
METHODS: On retrospectively reviewing the medical records of the patients who underwent autologous CLET from April 2002 to June 2012 at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India, we could trace the histological reports in only 90 records. These 90 records, besides clinical parameters, were reviewed for the influence of various histological features on the final outcome of CLET.
RESULTS: The histologic

Redundant pannus after massive weight loss can impair function and obscure abdominal wall pathology. Incisional hernia after cesarean delivery is uncommon, and extension of the small bowel into a post-bariatric pannus is particularly unusual. We report a 42-year-old woman with three prior cesarean deliveries and prior bariatric surgery who presented with a functionally limiting grade 3 pannus and a long-standing, nonreducible lower abdominal bulge. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a 12.3 cm × 5.6 cm low ventral incisional hernia with a 6.7 cm neck containing small bowel loops extending in

INTRODUCTION: Pannus formation and resulting cartilage destruction during rheumatoid arthritis (RA) depends on the migration of synoviocytes to cartilage tissue. Here, we focused on the role of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-2α-induced chemokines by chondrocytes in the regulation of fibroblast-like synoviocyte (FLS) migration into the cartilage-pannus interface and cartilage erosion.
METHODS: Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), K/BxN serum transfer, and tumor necrosis factor-α transgenic mice were used as experimental RA models. Expression patterns of HIF-2α and chemokines were determined via i

OBJECTIVES: Several techniques have been proposed for treating cervical spine instability due to rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study was to screen the different treatment options used in this pathology to evaluate the best form of treatment when the progression of rheumatoid disease affected the cranio-vertebral junction (CVJ) stability. The most important purpose of this study was to achieve both the efficacy of occipito-cervical fusion (OCF) to stabilize the occipitocervical junction and stop pannus progression. The authors describe their case example and stress, in the light of a li

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is a blinding disease caused by conjunctival infection with Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct). Mass drug administration (MDA) for trachoma control is administered based on the population prevalence of the clinical sign of trachomatis inflammation - follicular (TF). However, the prevalence of TF is often much higher than the prevalence of Ct infection. The addition of a clinical sign specific for current ocular Ct infection to TF could save resources by preventing unnecessary additional rounds of MDA.
METHODS: Study participants were aged between 1-9 years and resided on 7 island

OBJECTIVES: Examination of synovial tissue (ST) obtained at surgery because of end stage destructive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) showed that macrophages and fibroblasts are the major cell types at the cartilage-pannus junction (CPJ). This study aimed at defining the cell infiltrate and mediators of joint destruction in ST selected at arthroscopy from the CPJ in patients with RA who did not require joint surgery.
METHODS: Paired synovial biopsy specimens were obtained at arthroscopy from ST adjacent to the CPJ and the suprapatellar pouch from the knee joints of 17 patients with RA. Immunohistolo

OBJECTIVE: To use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the importance of knee joint synovitis at the cartilage-pannus junction (CPJ) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as compared with synovitis at a distant site in the suprapatellar pouch (SPP) and as compared with CPJ synovitis in the spondylarthropathies (SpA), and to assess the relative response of knee joint synovitis to therapy at the CPJ and SPP sites.
METHODS: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DEMRI) of actively involved knee joints in 24 patients (13 with RA and 11 with SpA) was undertaken. The area of synovitis was calculated at t

BACKGROUND: The transoral transpharyngeal odontoidectomy, followed by occipitocervical fixation, have traditionally been a recognized method for ameliorating ventral compression at the craniovertebral junction (CVJ), despite its associated comorbidities. As an alternative, the endoscopic endonasal odontoid resection is a viable approach for various CVJ abnromalities that preserve the oropharynx and leads to fewer procedure-related complications(1-4). We present our case to detail the technical nuances of the procedure and its advantages over other techniques.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation, synovial hyperplasia, cartilage degeneration, bone erosion, and pannus. Immunoglobulin D (IgD) plays an important role in autoimmune diseases although the content of it in vivo is low. Increased concentrations of anti-IgD autoantibodies have been detected in many RA patients. IgD-Fc-Ig fusion protein is constructed by connecting human IgD Fc domain and IgG1 Fc domain, which specifically block the IgD/ IgDR pathway and regulate the function of cells expressing IgDR to treat RA. The expression levels

BACKGROUND: The pathologic and echocardiographic findings observed in 87 patients with mitral valve obstruction were reviewed to ascertain the incidence of pannus formation versus that of thrombosis, the relationship between the two, and the time to the occurrence of pannus versus the time to thrombosis.
METHODS: Pannus morphology (concentric or eccentric), its location on the valve (atrial, ventricular, atrioventricular), and the presence and relationship of associated thrombi (atrial, ventricular, atrioventricular) were analyzed. The times between valve replacement and the occurrence of obs

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery results in significant and durable weight loss and improved health in severely obese adolescents. An important adverse consequence of the massive weight loss after bariatric surgery is excess skin and soft tissue. The prevalence and clinical characteristics of excess skin-related symptoms have been described in adults undergoing bariatric surgery but not in adolescents. Although the higher skin elasticity of adolescents may result in fewer excess skin problems compared with adults, this hypothesis remains untested.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was

We examined the capability of a gray-scale arterial spin labeling blood flow pattern variation (BFPV) map with two different post labeling delay (PLD) times to discriminate pannus in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) at 3T. There was a statistically significant difference in the BFPV values between artery, pannus, and surrounding tissue. Furthermore, the color-coded BFPV map was able to accurately distinguish pannus from other tissues. These results suggest this approach may be capable of identifying pannus noninvasively.

Prosthetic valve obstruction is a life-threatening complication most commonly caused by thrombus, pannus, or both. We report a St. Jude tricuspid valve obstruction, initially treated with thrombolytic therapy, found to be caused by pannus on pathologic examination. Clinical evaluation and diagnostic evaluation with fluoroscopy and echocardiography in distinguishing pannus from thrombus are reviewed.

Ten patients with severe chronic rheumatoid arthritis with atlantoaxial subluxation were examined with conventional radiography and MR imaging of the cervical spine before and at an average of 6 months after posterior occipitocervical fusion. Periodontoid pannus formation was revealed by MR preoperatively in nine patients, all with mobile horizontal atlantoaxial subluxation. Compression of the medulla and/or upper cervical cord, due to subluxation and periodontoid pannus bulging into the spinal canal, was seen in seven patients. After the stabilizing surgery the periodontoid pannus had decreas
