Successful treatment of infertility in a female Sumatran orangutan Pongo abelii.

In 2011, a female Sumatran orangutan housed at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust became infertile following a massive antepartum hemorrhage in labor and the delivery of a stillborn infant. The placenta was infected with Pantoea sp. Hysterosalpingography (HSG) revealed blocked fallopian tubes, and pressurized fallopian tube perfusion was used to reverse the tubal occlusion. She subsequently conceived and following an intensive training program, we were able to measure umbilical artery waveform analysis for fetal well-being and placental localization to exclude placenta previa, which could com

Comprehensive genomic insights into Mixta calida isolated from the faecal sample of a tuberculosis patient in India.

Mixta calida, formerly known as Pantoea calida, is a motile Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium with coccoid rod morphology. Although previously considered non-pathogenic, emerging case studies indicate its potential role in causing serious infections, including bacteraemia, meningitis, sepsis, and implant-associated infections. This study presents the first whole-genome sequence of M. calida of Indian origin, isolated from the stool sample of a tuberculosis patient undergoing treatment. Sequencing was performed using the Illumina NextSeq 2000 and Oxford Nanopore PromethION platfo

The Therapeutic Efficacy of Inhaled Vitamin D3 Metabolites Initiated During the Acute Phase of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis: An In Vivo Study.

Our earlier studies have revealed the beneficial impact of vitamin D3 (VD3) metabolites on the development of pulmonary fibrosis in a murine model of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). Despite the discovery of the great antifibrotic potential of both the bioactive form of VD3, 1,25(OH)2-VD3 and its direct precursor, 25(OH)-VD3, study designs based on the co-administration of VD3-metabolites and fibrosis-inducers do not reflect the clinical situation. Thus, the presented study aims to examine the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions based on the mentioned inhalations, initiated during the

[Growth-promoting effect and triptolide production regulation of endophytic bacteria from Tripterygium wilfordii].

A total of twenty-three endophytic bacteria were isolated from Tripterygium wilfordii, among which three strains were selected for further studying based on their capabilities of growth-promotion and wheat germination. All three isolated strains could produce phytohormone and siderophore, and LG3 and LJ10 strains were capable of dissolving phosphorus. Additionally, LG3 and LY4 strains were both proved to have nitrogen-fixing function and 1-aminocyclopropane-1carboxy-late deaminase activity. Bacterial 16S rDNA sequence identification and homology analysis suggested that LG3 and LY4 strains belo

Recovery from immunosuppression-related disorders in humans and animals by IP-PA1, an edible lipopolysaccharide.

Immunopotentiator from Pantoea agglomerans 1 (IP-PA1), an edible lipopolysaccharide (LPS) derived from symbiotic bacteria in crops, is a promising immunomodulator. It activates macrophages and protects from chemotherapeutic agent-induced growth inhibition in macrophages in vitro. We showed the immune-recovery effects of IP-PA1 in a chicken model of dexamethasone-induced stress in which IP-PA1 inhibited thymic and bursal atrophy and improved antibody production in response to vaccination. Furthermore, we showed IP-PA1 improved survival of melanoma-bearing, doxorubicin-treated mice, although not

Retained Hawthorn fragment in a child's foot complicated by infection: diagnosis and excision aided by localization with ultrasound.

Puncture wounds in children are very common and often result in foreign body retention. Organic materials in the form of plant thorns present problems in identification and localization because they are not visualized with plain radiographs. A case of a 10-year-old girl with a small piece of retained hawthorn is presented. Correct diagnosis and treatment were delayed because of misinterpretation of magnetic resonance image studies. Ultrasound ultimately located the foreign body, and assisted in its excision. Plant thorns may be toxic and produce an intense local inflammatory response. In the c

Seed-vectored endophytic bacteria modulate development of rice seedlings.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the removal of indigenous bacteria from rice seeds on seedling growth and development. Here we report the presence of three indigenous endophytic bacteria in rice seeds that play important roles in modulating seedling development (shoot and root lengths, and formation of root hairs and secondary roots) and defence against pathogens. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seed-associated bacteria were removed using surface sterilization with NaOCl (bleach) followed by antibiotic treatment. When bacteria were absent, growth of seedlings in terms of

Enterobacter agglomerans, an uncommon cause of community-acquired bacterial infection in neonates.

Enterobacter agglomerans formerly termed Erwina herbicola but now called Pantonea agglomerans is a ubiquitous gram-negative bacterium that rarely causes mild and opportunistic infection in humans. Sources of infection are myriad causing both local and systemic disease across all systems of the body. Infection is often fulminant and fatal in neonates. We aim to report another facet of the infection as seen in our centre. Of the 248 neonates recruited into the study, 94 had bacteria isolated from their blood, eight (8.5%) of whom had E. agglomerans sepsis. Infection was acquired from the communi

Persistent Knee Monoarthritis as a Lyme Disease Presentation: A Diagnostic Challenge - Case Report.

There are several differential diagnoses for knee monoarthritis. We report a patient with recurrent episodes of knee effusion, in which the non-specific clinical condition implied several diagnostic hypotheses, therapeutic inaccuracies, and a delay in implementing adequate treatment. For more than 2 years, the patient underwent different Orthopedics and Rheumatology visits. She received multiple therapies, including a knee arthroscopy with partial meniscectomy with transient improvement of the complaints but not a definitive diagnosis. After collecting synovial fluid samples and successively n

Succession and persistence of microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance genes associated with International Space Station environmental surfaces.

BACKGROUND: The International Space Station (ISS) is an ideal test bed for studying the effects of microbial persistence and succession on a closed system during long space flight. Culture-based analyses, targeted gene-based amplicon sequencing (bacteriome, mycobiome, and resistome), and shotgun metagenomics approaches have previously been performed on ISS environmental sample sets using whole genome amplification (WGA). However, this is the first study reporting on the metagenomes sampled from ISS environmental surfaces without the use of WGA. Metagenome sequences generated from eight defined

Molecular characterization and kinetics of isoprene degrading bacteria.

Isoprene, the highly reactive volatile organic compound, is used as monomer for the synthesis of several useful polymers. Its extensive production and usage leads to contamination of air. Once released, it alters the atmospheric chemistry by reacting with hydroxyl radicals (OH) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) to generate tropospheric ozone. Its prolonged exposure causes deleterious effects in human and plants. Therefore, its removal from the contaminated environment through biodegradation, provides a promising remedial solution. In the present study, isoprene utilizing bacteria namely, Pseudomonas s

Complete Genome Sequence of bla IMP-6-Positive Metakosakonia sp. MRY16-398 Isolate From the Ascites of a Diverticulitis Patient.

A novel species of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) was isolated from a patient diagnosed with sigmoid colon diverticulitis. At first, laboratory testing suggested it was Klebsiella oxytoca or Pantoea sp.; however, a complete genome sequence of the isolate, MRY16-398, revealed that it could be novel species, most similar to [Kluyvera] intestini, of which taxonomic nomenclature is still under discussion. Orthologous conserved gene analysis among 42 related bacterial strains indicated that MRY16-398 was classified as the newly proposed genus Metakosakonia. Further, MRY16-398 was

Endophytic Bacteria Associated with Medicinal Plant Vernonia anthelmintica: Diversity and Characterization.

Increasing evidence shows that endophytic bacteria living inside plant tissue may possess similar biological activity and produce similar metabolites to their hosts. This study aimed to determine the diversity of endophytic bacteria associated with Vernonia anthelmintica and to evaluate their biological activity. The bacteria were isolated from the plant tissue using culture-dependent techniques. Comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of endophytic bacteria isolated from V. anthelmintica showed that isolates belong to the species Micrococcus endophyticus VERA1, Bacillus megaterium VERA2, Ps

A paratransgenic strategy to block transmission of Xylella fastidiosa from the glassy-winged sharpshooter Homalodisca vitripennis.

BACKGROUND: Arthropod-borne diseases remain a leading cause of human morbidity and mortality and exact an enormous toll on global agriculture. The practice of insecticide-based control is fraught with issues of excessive cost, human and environmental toxicity, unwanted impact on beneficial insects and selection of resistant insects. Efforts to modulate insects to eliminate pathogen transmission have gained some traction and remain future options for disease control. RESULTS: Here, we report a paratransgenic strategy that targets transmission of Xylella fastidiosa, a leading bacterial pathogen

Revealing novel insights into the enhancement of quality in black tea processing through microbial intervention.

Black tea is highly favored by consumers worldwide, with enzymatic reactions being recognized as a pivotal factor influencing tea quality. The role of microorganisms in shaping the composition of black tea has emerged as a focus of research due to their involvement in enzyme catalysis and metabolic processes. In this study, full-length amplicon sequencing combined with qPCR more accurately reflected microbial profile, and Pantoea, Pseudomonas, Paucibacter, and Cladosporium were identified as the main microbial genera. Moreover, by comprehensively analyzing color, aroma, and taste components ov

Co-transmission of Rahnella aquatilis between hospitalized patients.

Rahnella aquatilis is an environmental Gram-negative bacillus that is rarely reported as human pathogen, being mainly associated with infections in immunocompromised patients. Herein we describe two cases of R. aquatilis isolates recovered from endotracheal aspirate cultures of different patients in a tertiary hospital located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA gene sequencing were performed to confirm bacterial identification after the isolates being erroneously identified as Pantoea spp. by automated sys

Biotransformation of Acetaminophen in Rice Phyllosphere: Xenobiotic-Plant-Microbiota Interactions.

The biotransformation of acetaminophen, a pharmaceutical contaminant widely found in crop produce, in the rice phyllosphere highlights critical xenobiotic-plant-microbiota interactions. This study investigated acetaminophen uptake, translocation, and transformation in hydroponically exposed rice shoots, revealing accumulation at 8.33 ± 0.82 μg/g and conversion into hydroxylated, glycosylated, methylated, thiomethylated, sulfonated, dimerized, and amino acid-conjugated derivatives. Specifically, these transformations may be driven by plant enzymes (cytochrome P450, glycosyltransferases, sulfotr
