First Report of Rhodnius stali Lent, Jurberg, and Galvão 1993 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) Naturally Infected by Trypanosoma cruzi in Concepción Department, Paraguay.

Most triatomine bugs inhabit nests and shelters of vertebrates, some of which are closely associated with palm trees. A few species occupy domestic and peridomestic habitats, posing a threat to human health as natural transmitters of Chagas disease. A peridomestic specimen that yielded positive results for Trypanosoma cruzi in both microscope and polymerase chain reaction tests was collected during a vector control survey in northeastern Paraguay. The specimen was identified as Rhodnius stali, marking a new record for the country. To the best of our knowledge, this is the southernmost report o

First report on the diversity and geographical distribution of mosquitoes of the genera Haemagogus and Sabethes (Diptera: Culicidae), the main vectors of jungle yellow fever in Paraguay.

Sylvatic yellow fever virus is transmitted by mosquitoes Haemagogus and Sabethes genera, which predominantly inhabit forested areas but can also be found near human dwellings in rural zones. In Paraguay, outbreaks of the disease were reported between 2007 and 2008, prompting the initiation of systematic sampling starting from those years to monitor the vectors transmitting the yellow fever virus. This study aims to identify the primary vector species and determine their geographic distribution in Paraguay, based on administrative divisions and ecoregions. Sampling was conducted in 17 departmen

The basaloid cell is the best tissue marker for human papillomavirus in invasive penile squamous cell carcinoma: a study of 202 cases from Paraguay.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been reported in 12-82% of penile squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). There is an association of the virus with basaloid and warty carcinomas but the reported prevalence is variable. The causes of these variations are not clear. They may be owing to geographic differences, the use of different techniques to detect HPV, the status of the original paraffin blocks, or to variable criteria in tumor classification. The aims of the study were to determine the prevalence of HPV in penile SCC and subtypes using a sensitive technique, to investigate genotypes involved, and to

Cross-sectional spatial and epidemiological analysis of canine visceral leishmaniasis cases in the triple border region, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, between 2015 and 2020.

Visceral Leishmaniasis is one of the most important vector-borne zoonoses in the world. In 2013, the first autochthonous canine case of the disease in the state of Paraná, southern region of Brazil, was reported in Foz do Iguaçu, on the triple border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. In 2015, the first human case was related. Once the endemic was confirmed, the Zoonoses Control Center (ZCC), an agency of the Municipal Health Department, started actions to implement the Human Visceral Leishmaniasis (HVL) Surveillance and Control Program (VLSCP), of the Ministry of Health. Between 2015 and

Scorpion Envenoming as an Emerging Public Health Problem in Paraguay, Bolivia, and Midwest Brazil: Involvement of Tityus confluens and the Need for a Panregional Evaluation of Available Antivenoms.

This contribution highlights the emergence of a newly endemic region for scorpion envenoming in South America, covering eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, and the midwestern Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. These areas have not historically been known to harbor life-threatening scorpion species. Tityus confluens, a parthenogenetic species of medical significance in Argentina, has been identified in severe and lethal human cases in Bolivia and Paraguay. Given that the clinical use of scorpion antivenom preparations in the region has often lacked preclinical data and considering t

Emerging hantaviruses in Central Argentina: First case of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome caused by Alto Paraguay virus, and a novel orthohantavirus in Scapteromys aquaticus rodent.

Orthohantaviruses are emerging rodent-borne pathogens that cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in humans. They have a wide range of rodent reservoir hosts and are transmitted to humans through aerosolized viral particles generated by the excretions of infected individuals. Since the first description of HPS in Argentina, new hantaviruses have been reported throughout the country, most of which are pathogenic to humans. We present here the first HPS case infected with Alto Paraguay virus reported in Argentina. Until now, Alto Paraguay virus was considered a non-pathogenic orthohantavirus since

Health service utilization patterns for substance use disorders in Paraguay: real-world evidence from a specialized treatment centre in a low- and middle-income setting.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) impose a substantial and evolving burden globally, yet real-world evidence on how addiction services are utilized in low- and middle-income countries remains limited. This study examined patterns of SUD-related service utilization (ICD-10 F10-F19) in Paraguay using routinely collected data from a national specialized treatment centre in 2024. A total of 18,149 attendances were analysed. Service utilization was heavily concentrated among young adult males (83.8%), with individuals aged 20-29 years accounting for the largest proportion of attendances (42.1%). Polys

The diversity of sandflies (Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) and the presence of Leishmania spp. DNA in potential vectors of the Mbaracayú Forest Biosphere Reserve, Canindeyú, Paraguay: New records and findings.

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease where parasites of the genus Leishmania are transmitted among hosts by sandfly vectors of the subfamily Phlebotominae. In Paraguay, studies on sandfly biodiversity are limited, even though the disease is present in its tegumentary and visceral forms. This pioneering ecoepidemiological study analyzes the diversity, abundance, and detection of Leishmania spp. DNA in sandflies from primary, secondary, and degraded forest habitats within the Mbaracayú Forest Biosphere Reserve. Over a year of sampling, 954 sandflies were captured, comprising 599 females and 355 m

Comparison of 4 laboratory tests for the detection of bovine rabies viral infection in Paraguay: fluorescent antibody test, rapid detection test, histologic lesions, and RT-PCR.

Rabies virus (RABV; Lyssavirus rabies) is a neurotropic virus that can be transmitted to mammals by the hematophagous bat Desmodus rotundus. An accurate, accessible method for the detection of RABV in cattle is necessary in Paraguay; thus, we evaluated the detection of RABV using 4 techniques: fluorescent antibody test (FAT), immunochromatography rapid detection test (RDT; Anigen Rapid Rabies Ag test kit; Bionote), a reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) assay, and histologic lesions in different portions of the CNS of 49 Paraguayan cattle to determine the most sensitive and specific technique.
