Alterations in the autonomic nerve activities of prenatal autism model mice treated with valproic acid at different developmental stages.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment of social communication, repetitive behavior and restrictive interest. The risk of ASD is strongly associated with the prenatal period; for instance, the administration of valproic acid (VPA) to pregnant mothers increases risk of ASD in the child. Patients with ASD often exhibit an alteration in the autonomic nervous system. In this study, we assessed the autonomic nervous activity at each prenatal developmental stage of model mice of ASD treated with VPA, to clarify the relationship between timing of exposure and ASD symptoms. Enhancement of salivary secretion by chronic anethole trithione treatment.

Effect on salivary secretion of a single dose and of chronic treatment with trithio-p-methoxyphenylpropene (anethole trithione; ANTT) was investigated in mice, rats and rabbits in relation to changes in function of the autonomic nervous system. Chronic treatment with ANTT enhanced salivary secretion induced by pilocarpine or electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nerve, but had no effect on salivary secretion induced by isoproterenol or phenylephrine. A single dose of ANTT had no effect on salivary secretion. Chronic treatment with ANTT prevented the inhibition of parotid salivary secre

Pupil light reflex evoked by light-emitting diode and computer screen: Methodology and association with need for recovery in daily life.

OBJECTIVES: Pupil light reflex (PLR) has been widely used as a method for evaluating parasympathetic activity. The first aim of the present study is to develop a PLR measurement using a computer screen set-up and compare its results with the PLR generated by a more conventional setup using light-emitting diode (LED). The parasympathetic nervous system, which is known to control the 'rest and digest' response of the human body, is considered to be associated with daily life fatigue. However, only few studies have attempted to test the relationship between self-reported daily fatigue and physiol

Heart rate variability analysis reveals a shift in autonomic balance towards an increase in parasympathetic tonus in boys with undescended testis.

AIM: Evaluations of sacs and cremaster muscles associated with undescended testis (UT) have revealed a decrease in sympathetic, but an increase in parasympathetic tonuses. Since the low frequency/high frequency power ratio obtained through spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) determines the sympatho-parasympathetic balance, the sympatho-parasympathetic balance as defined by HRV in healthy boys and in boys with UT were compared. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen healthy boys and 21 boys with UT presenting as an isolated anomaly were evaluated. Powers in low and high frequency bands we

Antagonistic and Synergistic Activation of Cardiovascular Vagal and Sympathetic Motor Outflows in Trigeminal Reflexes.

The trigeminal nerve and heart are strongly related through somato-autonomic nervous reflexes that induce rapid changes in cardiovascular function. Several trigeminal reflexes have been described, but the diving and trigeminocardiac reflexes are the most studied. The heart is a target organ dually innervated by the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Thus, how cardiac function is regulated during the trigeminal reflexes is the result of the combination of an increased parasympathetic response and increased, decreased, or unaltered sympathetic activity. Various hemodynamic changes occur as

Resting parasympathetic dysfunction predicts prosocial helping deficits in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

In the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), left-lateralized salience network dysfunction reduces basal activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, a branch of the autonomic nervous system that reduces arousal and fosters empathy and prosociality. Here we examined whether resting parasympathetic deficits in bvFTD related to diminished prosocial behavior. Eighty participants [30 with bvFTD, 25 with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and 25 healthy controls] completed a "helping task" in which we quantified participants' spontaneous reactions to an experimenter who struggled to find

Efficacy of atropine combined with paroxetine in vagus nerve excitatory panic disorder.

Panic disorder is often associated with the autonomic nervous system pattern - sympathetic activation and parasympathetic (vagal) withdrawal. However, we present one special case here to show a totally reversed pathogenesis - vagal activation occupying the leading role, which requires atropine to cure the patient's symptoms. Through this report, it is reasonably proven that panic disorder may be a heterogeneous condition, whose mechanism might be the imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic tone.

Control of pulmonary surfactant secretion from type II pneumocytes isolated from the lizard Pogona vitticeps.

Pulmonary surfactant, a mixture consisting of lipids and proteins and secreted by type II cells, functions to reduce the surface tension of the fluid lining of the lung, and thereby decreases the work of breathing. In mammals, surfactant secretion appears to be influenced primarily by the sympathetic nervous system and changes in ventilatory pattern. The parasympathetic nervous system is not believed to affect surfactant secretion in mammals. Very little is known about the factors that control surfactant secretion in nonmammalian vertebrates. Here, a new methodology for the isolation and cultu

White adipose tissue: getting nervous.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a cancer type that causes a high rate of cancer death in the world. The standard therapy plan of intermediate and advanced stages of the HCC is transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The treatment effectiveness is, however, limited because of the heterogeneity of tumors and the resistance to drugs. This paper shows that the HCC patients with TACE resistance alter their tumor immune homeostasis by reducing the secretion of exosomal miR-32-5p, which has a negative relationship with the population of CD68+ macrophages. Both in-cellular and animal studies show th

[Cholinergic systems in bronchospasm].

A neuronal cholinergic system is widely distributed in larger airways, particularly around bifurcations. These neurons form efferent pathways from the brainstem ending in the motor end-plate on smooth muscle, and ciliated and mucus-producing cells. Impulses originating in various sensory endings in the airways, from the central nervous system and from many sensory receptors throughout the body, influence the activity of the cholinergic system thereby controlling the patency of the airways and modulating the rate and depth of breathing. A non-neuronal cholinergic system present on mast cells fa

Activation of peripheral muscarinic receptors rescues depressive-like behaviors via gut-brain-axis, involving parasympathetic excitation.

Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is strongly linked to the pathophysiological mechanisms of depression. Unfortunately, the correlation between depressive-like behaviors and the activation or inhibition of the sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system has not been systematically explored. This study demonstrated that the pharmacological activation of sympathetic α-/β-adrenergic receptors increased stress susceptibility, whereas their antagonists enhanced stress resistance, thus suggesting a close correlation between sympathetic activity and depressive-like behaviors. Furthermo

Physiology of long pranayamic breathing: neural respiratory elements may provide a mechanism that explains how slow deep breathing shifts the autonomic nervous system.

Pranayamic breathing, defined as a manipulation of breath movement, has been shown to contribute to a physiologic response characterized by the presence of decreased oxygen consumption, decreased heart rate, and decreased blood pressure, as well as increased theta wave amplitude in EEG recordings, increased parasympathetic activity accompanied by the experience of alertness and reinvigoration. The mechanism of how pranayamic breathing interacts with the nervous system affecting metabolism and autonomic functions remains to be clearly understood. It is our hypothesis that voluntary slow deep br

Topography, syntopy and morphology of the human otic ganglion: a cadaver study.

The human otic ganglion (OG) is not readily accessible during ordinary anatomical teaching courses because of insufficient time and severe difficulties encountered in dissection. Accordingly, most anatomical descriptions of its location, relation to neighbouring structures, size and shape are supported only by drawings, but not by photographs. The aim of this study has been to present the OG with associated roots and branches in dissected anatomic specimens. Following cumbersome dissection and precise photo-documentation, a detailed analysis of location, syntopy and morphology was performed. W

Heart rate variability and vagal tone in schizophrenia: A review.

Recent heart rate variability (HRV) research has identified diminished levels of parasympathetic activity among schizophrenia patients. Over two dozen empirically-based studies have been published on this topic; primarily over the last decade. However, no theoretical review appears to have been published on this work. Further, only one empirical study has evaluated HRV research findings in the context of documented hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity in schizophrenia. HRV research indicates that no abnormalities exist in the initial sympathetic stress response of schizophrenia pa

Correlation of a new index reflecting the fluctuation of parasympathetic tone and fetal acidosis in an experimental study in a sheep model.

The autonomic nervous system plays a leading role in the control of fetal homeostasis. Fetal heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is a reflection of its activity. We developed a new index (the Fetal Stress Index, FSI) reflecting parasympathetic tone. The objective of this study was to evaluate this index as a predictor of fetal acid-base status. This was an experimental study on chronically instrumented fetal lambs (n = 11, surgery at 128 +/- 2 days gestational age, term = 145 days). The model was based on 75% occlusion of the umbilical cord for a maximum of 120 minutes or until an arterial p

Disturbances of autonomic nervous system activity and diminished response to stress in patients with celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CED) is immune-mediated enteropathy caused by gluten intolerance affecting genetically predisposed individuals. CED may exert a number of various symptoms, including extra intestinal manifestations. Neurological symptoms can be the first sign of gluten intolerance. However, affected autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may be linked to other symptoms. We evaluated the frequency of ANS impairment and resting ANS response to several stimuli in CED patients without neurological manifestations. Twenty five neurologically asymptomatic patients with CED were studied. The medical h
