Resolution of Postsurgical Diplopia, Paresthesia, and Weakness Following Inpatient Massage Therapy: A Case Report.

Massage therapy is utilized in hospitals for patients experiencing pain, anxiety, sleeplessness, among other symptoms. Postsurgical pain is one of the most common reasons massage therapy is ordered. We present a case of a 45-year-old woman who underwent ventral hernia repair. Postoperative day 2, she began to experience multiple symptoms, including double-vision, left-sided facial numbness, tremors, pain, and weakness in her left fingers, arm, and leg. A static magnetic resonance image of the brain and cervical spine were obtained, which revealed disc protrusions at C3/C4, C5/C6, C6/C7, and mi

Delayed paresthesia of inferior alveolar nerve after dental surgery: case report and related pathophysiology.

Paresthesia is an altered sensation of the skin, manifesting as numbness, partial loss of local sensitivity, burning, or tingling. The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is the third branch of the trigeminal nerve and is very important in dental treatment. IAN paresthesia may occur after various dental procedures such as simple anesthetic injections, surgical procedures, and endodontic treatment, and is reported to range from 0.35% to 8.4%. The altered sensation usually follows immediately after the procedure, and reports of late onset of nerve involvement are rare. This report presents a rare case

Case report: Bilateral facial palsy with paresthesias and positive anti-GT1a antibodies.

Bilateral facial palsy with paresthesia (FDP) is a rare variant of GBS, characterized by simultaneous bilateral facial palsy and paresthesia of the distal limbs. Mounting evidence indicates that the presence of anti-GT1a IgG has a pathogenic role as an effector molecule in the development of cranial nerve palsies in certain patients with GBS, whereas anti-GT1a antibody is rarely presented positive in FDP. Here, we report the case of a 33-year-old male diagnosed with FDP presented with acute onset of bilateral facial palsy and slight paresthesias at the feet as the only neurological manifestati

[Horner's syndrome and paresthesia in the trigeminal nerve territory secondary to epidural analgesia for labor].

Currently, epidural analgesia is a common procedure for labor analgesia. Although it is considered a safe technique, it is not without complications. Horner's syndrome and paresthesia within the trigeminal nerve distribution are rare complications of epidural analgesia. We report a case of a pregnant woman who developed Horner's syndrome and paresthesia within the distribution of the trigeminal nerve following epidural analgesia for the relief of labor pain.

Load Carriage-Related Paresthesias: Part 1: Rucksack Palsy and Digitalgia Paresthetica.

This is the first of a two-part article discussing loadcarriage- related paresthesias, including brachial plexus lesions (rucksack palsy), digitalgia paresthetica, and meralgia paresthetica. Paresthesias are sensations of numbness, burning, and/or tingling, usually experienced as a result of nerve injury, compression, traction, or irritation. Rucksack palsy is a traction or compression injury to the brachial plexus, caused by the shoulder straps of the rucksack. The patient presents with paresthesia, paralysis, cramping with pain, and muscle weakness of the upper limb. Muscle-strength losses a

Simultaneous paresthesia of the lingual nerve and inferior alveolar nerve caused by a radicular cyst.

The inferior alveolar nerve is sometimes affected by periapical pathoses and mandibular cysts. However, mandibular intraosseous lesions have not been reported to disturb the lingual nerve. A case of simultaneous paresthesia of the right lingual nerve and the right inferior alveolar nerve is presented. The possible mechanisms of this extremely uncommon condition are discussed.

Iatrogenic paresthesia in the third division of the trigeminal nerve: 12 years of clinical experience.

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic paresthesia in the third division of the trigeminal nerve remains a complex clinical problem with major medicolegal implications. However, most lawsuits can be prevented through better planning of procedures and by obtaining informed consent. The purpose of this article is to present the authors" clinical experience over the past 12 years, to review the principles of prevention and management of trigeminal paresthesia and to highlight the resulting medicolegal implications. METHODS: The files of all 165 patients referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgery department

Carpal compression test and pressure provocative test in veterans with median-distribution paresthesias.

We investigated the value of the carpal compression test (CCT) and the pressure provocative test (PPT) in predicting carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in a predominantly male population of veterans. We performed a prospective, blinded comparison of these clinical diagnostic tests with neurophysiological testing. One cohort of 135 consecutive patients was assessed with the CCT; a separate cohort of 134 consecutive patients was assessed with the PPT. Of these 269 patients, 58.4% had electrodiagnostically confirmed CTS. The sensitivity of the CCT was 52.5%, specificity was 61.8%, positive predictive v

[Paresthesia, pain, coldness of the arm and possible responsibility of the thoraco-brachial outlet syndrome].

Paresthesia, pain and coldness of the upper limb strongly suggest ischemia. The questions raised concern the etiology and treatment. 1) Treatment is based on confirmation of the unilateral nature of the disorder requiring search for the a locoregional cause (examination of the subclavian outlet) and on elimination of a cardiac or general origin. Two noninvasive examinations are indicated. An X-ray examination of the upper chest bones is performed to search for an abnormal formation, usually a cervical rib. Presence of a cervical rib indicates a possible damage to the sub-clavian artery in the

Myriad erythematous skin lesions, paresthesia, and anterior uveitis in a 34-year-old man.

A 34-year-old man recently immigrated from Guam to Colorado presented with a 3-year history of skin lesions and months of worsening eye irritation and vision loss. Examination revealed leonine facies, tender erythematous nodules, corneal neovascularization, and granulomatous anterior uveitis. Diagnosed with multibacillary leprosy complicated by erythema nodosum leprosum, he responded well to multidrug therapy and immunosuppressive treatment, with significant improvement in systemic symptoms, ocular inflammation, and skin lesions at follow-up.

Multislice computed tomography demonstrating mental nerve paresthesia caused by periapical infection: A case report.

Components derived from an infected lesion within the bone can spread through various passages in the mandible, particularly via the mental foramen. Radiologically, the spread of infection is typically nonspecific and challenging to characterize; however, multislice computed tomography (MSCT) can effectively detect pathological changes in soft tissues and the bone marrow space. This report describes the case of a 55-year-old woman who experienced mental nerve paresthesia due to a periapical infection of the right mandibular second premolar. MSCT imaging revealed increased attenuation around th

Unilateral Horner's Syndrome and Upper Limb Paresthesia Following Labor Epidural Analgesia: A Case Report.

Horner's syndrome arises from a disruption in the sympathetic nervous system. Although it is an uncommon complication of labor epidural analgesia, its occurrence is significantly more frequent among pregnant women. The incidence of Horner's syndrome after epidural analgesia for labor is 0.4%. This heightened frequency may be attributed to the extensive upward spread of local anesthetic (LA), which is possibly amplified by the anatomical and physiological changes during pregnancy. Here, we describe a case of unilateral Horner's syndrome following epidural analgesia, which was also associated wi

Relation of Mandibular Canal Discontinuity and IAN Paresthesia in Operated Cases of Mandibular Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular fractures are common in maxillofacial trauma, often requiring surgical intervention for optimal recovery. One critical concern during such procedures is the potential for nerve damage, specifically involving the mandibular canal. This study aims to investigate whether the presence of postoperative mandibular canal discontinuity is associated with an increased risk of nerve damage. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 72 postoperative mandibular fracture patients. In total, 58 patients had entire mandibular canal continuity, while 14 showe

Primary somatosensory/motor cortical thickness distinguishes paresthesia-dominant from pain-dominant carpal tunnel syndrome.

Paresthesia-dominant and pain-dominant subgroups have been noted in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a peripheral neuropathic disorder characterized by altered primary somatosensory/motor (S1/M1) physiology. We aimed to investigate whether brain morphometry dissociates these subgroups. Subjects with CTS were evaluated with nerve conduction studies, whereas symptom severity ratings were used to allocate subjects into paresthesia-dominant (CTS-paresthesia), pain-dominant (CTS-pain), and pain/paresthesia nondominant (not included in further analysis) subgroups. Incidence of chest wall paresthesia after needlescopic video-assisted thoracic surgery for palmar hyperhidrosis.

OBJECTIVE: Chest wall paresthesia is a reported sequela of thoracotomy and Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) which is distinct from wound pain. Although needlescopic VATS confers less post-operative pain and better cosmesis, the incidence of paresthesia after needlescopic VATS has not been quantified. METHODS: For homogeneity of the patient cohort, we studied 50 patients who received bilateral needlescopic VATS sympathectomy (T2-T4 excision) for palmar hyperhidrosis using 2 or 3 mm instruments during a 36-month period at a single institute. A standard questionnaire was administered by te

[Translated article] Paresthesias on the lateral face of the forearm: A nervous injury that is difficult to recognize.

The lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LACN) is the sensory branch of the musculocutaneous nerve and usually innervates the lateral aspect of the forearm. Isolated lesions are rare, of varied aetiology and generally underdiagnosed. We present a retrospective descriptive study of electromyography performed at the General University Hospital of Castellón in the last 20 years with isolated NCAL lesion. We identified 11 cases (8 men and 3 women), average age 44 years (15-73 years). 73% were referred from traumatology. Only one patient was correctly guided in the application. 63.6% of cases note

The effect of pulse width and contact configuration on paresthesia coverage in spinal cord stimulation.

BACKGROUND: In spinal cord stimulation for the management of chronic, intractable pain, a satisfactory analgesic effect can be obtained only when the stimulation-induced paresthesias cover all painful body areas completely or partially. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of stimulus pulse width (PW) and contact configuration (CC) on the area of paresthesia (PA), perception threshold (VPT), discomfort threshold (VDT), and usage range (UR) in spinal cord stimulation. METHODS: Chronic pain patients were tested during a follow-up visit. They were stimulated monopolarly and with the CC giving e
