Acute parietal lobe infarction presenting as Gerstmann's syndrome and cognitive decline mimicking senile dementia.

Gerstmann's syndrome encompasses the tetrad of finger agnosia, agraphia, acalculia, and right-left confusion. An elderly man with a history of several cardiovascular diseases was initially brought to the psychiatric outpatient department by his family because of worsening of recent memory, executive function, and mixed anxious-depressive mood. Gerstmann's syndrome without obvious motor function impairment and dementia-like features could be observed at first. Emergent brain computed tomography scan revealed new left-middle cerebral artery infarction over the left posterior parietal lobe. This

Tactile apraxia: unimodal apractic disorder of tactile object exploration associated with parietal lobe lesions.

Tactile apraxia is characterized by an isolated disturbance of hand movements for use of and interaction with an object (transitive movements) in the presence of preserved intransitive movements (movements without use of an object, for example repetitive movements or gestures). It is, however, still unclear whether motor and sensory abnormalities represent causal or associated features of tactile apraxia. To address this question, quantitative kinematic recordings of exploratory finger movements (transitive movements) and rapid alternating finger movements (intransitive movements) were studied

Acute embolic infarcts of bilateral cerebellar lobes, cerebral peduncles, thalami and left parietal lobe cortex following HIPEC surgery.

Cytoreductive surgery and intraoperative, intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion (hyperthermic intraperitoneal intraoperative chemotherapy) are commonly used for the management of peritoneal surface metastases. We describe a case of acute embolic infarcts in bilateral cerebellar lobes, cerebral peduncles, thalamus and left parietal lobe cortex in a postmenopausal woman in her 50s diagnosed with bilateral ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma with peritoneal metastasis under general anaesthesia.

Left parietal structural connectivity mediates typical and atypical language laterality in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Subjects with left temporal lobe epilepsy may either show altered hemispheric language lateralization or retain typical, left lateralization. Examining the integrity of white matter pathways involved in the adaptation or maintenance of language lateralization in these patients could have important clinical implications for preserving or potentiating compensatory language mechanisms. METHODS: We combined task functional magnetic resonance imaging and structural diffusion metrics to determine the dependency of lobe-based language laterality on white matter integrity in healthy partic

Increased Effective Connectivity of the Left Parietal Lobe During Walking Tasks in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease (PD), walking may depend on the activation of the cerebral cortex. Understanding the patterns of interaction between cortical regions during walking tasks is of great importance. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated differences in the effective connectivity (EC) of the cerebral cortex during walking tasks in individuals with PD and healthy controls. METHODS: We evaluated 30 individuals with PD (62.4±7.2 years) and 22 age-matched healthy controls (61.0±6.4 years). A mobile functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to record cerebral oxygenation si

Cognitive and affective theory of mind double dissociation after parietal and temporal lobe tumours.

Extensive neuroimaging literature suggests that understanding others' thoughts and emotions engages a wide network encompassing parietal, temporal and medial frontal brain areas. However, the causal role played by these regions in social inferential abilities is still unclear. Moreover very little is known about theory of mind deficits in brain tumours and whether potential anatomical substrates are comparable to those identified in functional MRI literature. This study evaluated the performance of 105 tumour patients, before and immediately after brain surgery, on a cartoon-based non-verbal t

Simultaneous Motor and Visual Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Asleep Parietal Lobe Surgery: Dual Strip Technique.

Background: The role played by the non-dominant parietal lobe in motor cognition, attention and spatial awareness networks has potentiated the use of awake surgery. When this is not feasible, asleep monitoring and mapping techniques should be used to achieve an onco-functional balance. Objective: This study aims to assess the feasibility of a dual-strip method to obtain direct cortical stimulation for continuous real-time cortical monitoring and subcortical mapping of motor and visual pathways simultaneously in parietal lobe tumour surgery. Methods: Single-centre prospective study between 19 M

Parieto-premotor functional connectivity changes during parietal lobe seizures are associated with motor semiology.

OBJECTIVES: Parietal lobe seizures (PLS) are characterized by multiple clinical manifestations including motor signs. The mechanisms underlying the occurrence of motor signs are poorly understood. The main objective of this work was to estimate the functional coupling of brain regions associated with this clinical presentation. METHODS: We retrospectively selected patients affected by drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) for pre-surgical evaluation and in whom the seizure onset zone (SOZ) was located in the parietal cortex. The SOZ was defined visually and

Integrating when and what information in the left parietal lobe allows language rule generalization.

A crucial aspect when learning a language is discovering the rules that govern how words are combined in order to convey meanings. Because rules are characterized by sequential co-occurrences between elements (e.g., "These cupcakes are unbelievable"), tracking the statistical relationships between these elements is fundamental. However, purely bottom-up statistical learning alone cannot fully account for the ability to create abstract rule representations that can be generalized, a paramount requirement of linguistic rules. Here, we provide evidence that, after the statistical relations betwee

Long-term seizure outcome following epilepsy surgery in the parietal lobe: a meta-analysis.

Due to a limited number of patients with drug-resistant parietal lobe epilepsy in surgical series, there are insufficient data about long-term seizure outcome following surgery restricted to the parietal lobe. We performed a meta-analysis to asses long-term outcomes in patients with parietal lobe epilepsy who underwent surgery confined to the parietal lobe or resection with major involvement of the parietal cortex. An English language literature search for studies on parietal lobe surgery and outcome was conducted using the MEDLINE database, followed by a manual search based on specific criter

Parietal lobe volume distinguishes attentional control in bilinguals and monolinguals: A structural MRI study.

Research suggests that bilingualism is associated with increases in parietal gray matter volume (GMV). These parietal GMV increases are a source of variability that may help explain the reported bilingual/monolingual differences in attentional control. The current study examined how parietal GMV variability and a participant's language background predicted Simon task performance. GMV measures were extracted from the bilateral angular and supramarginal gyri from participants' MRI scans using Freesurfer image analysis suite. Contrary to expectations, bilinguals did not outperform monolinguals on

Parietal lobe critically supports successful paired immediate and single-item delayed memory for targets.

The parietal lobe is important for successful recognition memory, but its role is not yet fully understood. We investigated the parietal lobes' contribution to immediate paired-associate memory and delayed item-recognition memory separately for hits (targets) and correct rejections (distractors). We compared the behavioral performance of 56 patients with known parietal and medial temporal lobe dysfunction (i.e. early Alzheimer's Disease) to 56 healthy control participants in an immediate paired and delayed single item object memory task. Additionally, we performed voxel-based morphometry analy

Topographic anatomy of the lateral surface of the parietal lobe and its relationship with white matter tracts.

Aim of this study was to define sulcal and gyral variations of the lateral parietal cortex and underlying white matter tracts and emphasize the importance of relationship between topographic anatomy of parietal lobe and white matter tracts underlying it in approaches to deep parietal and atrial lesions. Twenty-eight formalin-fixed cerebral hemispheres of 14 adult cadavers were used. Ten hemispheres were dissected from lateral to medial by fiber dissection and all stages were photographed. Our anatomic findings were supported by MRI tractography. Postcentral sulcus and intraparietal sulcus were

The structure of the superior and inferior parietal lobes predicts inter-individual suitability for virtual reality.

The global virtual reality (VR) market is significantly expanding and being challenged with an increased demand owing to COVID-19. Unfortunately, VR is not useful for everyone due to large interindividual variability existing in VR suitability. To understand the neurobiological basis of this variability, we obtained neural structural and functional data from the participants using 3T magnetic resonance imaging. The participants completed one of two tasks (sports training or cognitive task) using VR, which differed in the time scale (months/minutes) and domain (motor learning/attention task). B

Information content best characterises the hemispheric selectivity of the inferior parietal lobe: a meta-analysis.

Our understanding of the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) remains challenged by inconsistencies between neuroimaging and neuropsychological perspectives. To date, others assume that hemispheric specialisation of the IPL is linked with the type of processing; attention processing in the right hemisphere; memory retrieval and semantic judgement in the left hemisphere. Here, we provide compelling evidence associating the type of information being processed with the recruitment of each hemisphere's IPL. In a meta-analysis, we classify 121 previous fMRI reports of IPL activity arising from episodic mem

Parietal lobe and disorganisation syndrome in schizophrenia and psychotic bipolar disorder: A bimodal connectivity study.

Given the emerging evidence in support of parietal brain stimulation to treat speech disorder in psychosis, we investigated structural and functional parietal dysconnectivity in schizophrenia (n = 34) and bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms (n = 16). We found that both patient groups demonstrated reduced left parietal structural connectivity compared to healthy controls (n = 32). The three groups also differed significantly on the variability of left and right parietal dynamic functional connectivity. In patients with schizophrenia, parietal dysconnectivity predicted the severity of disor

Modulation of Speech Motor Learning with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of the Inferior Parietal Lobe.

The inferior parietal lobe (IPL) is a region of the cortex believed to participate in speech motor learning. In this study, we investigated whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the IPL could influence the extent to which healthy adults (1) adapted to a sensory alteration of their own auditory feedback, and (2) changed their perceptual representation. Seventy subjects completed three tasks: a baseline perceptual task that located the phonetic boundary between the vowels /e/ and /a/; a sensorimotor adaptation task in which subjects produced the word "head" under conditions o

Longitudinal investigation of the parietal lobe anatomy in bipolar disorder and its association with general functioning.

The parietal lobe (PL) supports cognitive domains, including attention and memory, which are impaired in bipolar disorder (BD). Although cross-sectional voxel-based morphometry studies found reduced PL grey matter (GM) in BD, none has longitudinally focused on PL anatomy in BD, relating it to patients' functioning. Thirty-eight right-handed BD patients and 42 matched healthy subjects (HS) underwent a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan at baseline. Seventeen BD patients and 16 matched HS underwent a follow-up MRI. PL white matter (WM) and GM volumes were measured. The trajectory of parietal

Mapping the functional neuroanatomy of spatial neglect and human parietal lobe functions: progress and challenges.

Spatial neglect is generally defined by various deficits in processing information from one (e.g., left) side of space contralateral to focal (e.g., right) hemisphere damage. Although classically associated with parietal lobe functions, there is now compelling evidence that neglect can follow lesions in many different cortical and subcortical sites, suggesting a dysfunction in distributed brain networks. In addition, neglect is likely to result from a combination of distinct deficits that co-occur due to concomitant damage affecting juxtaposed brain areas and their connections, but the exact n
