Rheumatoid nodules are an extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis that are rarely found in the maxillofacial region. A 59-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate, leflunomide, and tocilizumab, presented with an enlarging mass in the left parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) displayed a lesion compatible with a neoplasm. However, an incisional biopsy showed features consistent with a rheumatoid nodule. The patient was managed conservatively, including cessation of methotrexate and initiation of treatment with hydroxychloroquine. At 15-month f

It is difficult to distinguish nodular fasciitis (NF) from other neoplasm of the parotid gland, especially pleomorphic adenoma (PA) by fine needle aspiration cytology. A 39-year-old female noticed a mass in the parotid region. The aspirate material showed cohesive parts composed of the cells that had oval or spindle-shaped nuclei and relatively abundant cytoplasm and some cells with plasmacytoid features. The background substance was fibromyxoid. PA was diagnosed based on the cytologic findings. Subsequently, parotidectomy was performed and NF was diagnosed based on histologic and immunohistoc

During an anatomic dissection of the parotid region inferiorly located parotid glands were noted on both sides. Because within the glands lies the external carotid artery, retromandibular vein and the facial nerve, surgeons should have detailed knowledge of the anatomy of this region and possible variations to avoid risk of damaging, especially the facial nerve. Also the unusual location of the gland may be confused with pseudomass during CT or MRI.

Kaposi's sarcoma is the most frequent malignancy associated with AIDS. The occurrence of Kaposi's sarcoma in the parotid region is extremely rare. In this publication we present a case of a 47-year-old male patient who developed a swelling of the left parotid tail that proved to be Kaposi's sarcoma of an intra parotid lymph node. A discussion of the etiological factors, clinical staging and management of KS, as well as the differential diagnosis of the parotid enlargement in AIDS patients, is presented.

Lipomas are common benign tumors usually detected on the torso, neck, upper thighs, and upper arms. However, they are rarely found in the parotid gland region. Because of their rarity at this site, they are not often considered in the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. This report describes a rare case of a lipoma in the superficial lobe of parotid gland. A 71-year-old female patient admitted to our department complaining about swelling and pain in the posterior area of the left mandibular region since one month. Her medical history included mastectomy after breast CA fifteen years ago.

On the basis of two cases, one a fistula and the other a cyst of the first brachial cleft with chiefly parotid manifestations, a review of the embryology is given which explains the anatomical features. The elements in their clinical diagnosis, complemented by fistulography and sialography are compared with operative findings, the essential steps in which are as follows: 1) Identification of the facial nerve which by necessity overlies the lesions. 2) Partial resection of the superficial lobe of the parotid. 3) The essential resection of the external auditory meatus, the keystone of radical cu

First bite syndrome (FBS) is an uncommon pain syndrome characterised by severe cramping or spasm in the parotid region with the first bite of each meal. The proposed pathogenesis is sympathetic denervation of the parotid gland secondary to iatrogenic injury with resultant cross-stimulatory parasympathetic hypersensitivity response. FBS is a potential sequela of surgeries involving the infratemporal fossa, parapharyngeal space and/or deep lobe of the parotid gland, however, only four cases of FBS secondary to carotid endarterectomy have been documented to date. We present a case and management

Swelling of the parotid region is a frequent reason for consultation and the first clinical sign of both benign and malignant parotid tumors. These parotid tumors represent 80 % of tumors of the main salivary glands. They present a highly variable clinical and radiological picture and are known to have a wide histological diversity. Some histological types are rare entities found in the parotid gland, such as Ewing's sarcoma and lymphoepithelial cyst, the latter of which is often associated with HIV co-morbidity, and therefore requires careful and adequate therapeutic attitudes and strategies.

Cystic lymphangioma of the parotid gland is an uncommon congenital lymphatic malformation. Its occurrence in patients of advanced age is infrequent. Patients usually present with painless soft swelling, often having experienced a long duration of symptoms. Lymphangioma among the salivary glands frequently involves the parotid gland. When evaluating cystic lesions of the parotid gland, cystic lymphangioma should be included in the differential diagnosis in addition to Warthin's tumor, branchial cyst, cystic pleomorphic adenoma, and cystic mucoepidermoid tumor. Ultrasonography (USG) and magnetic

Metastatic involvement of the oral and maxillofacial region is an uncommon clinical event. These secondary lesions may develop in several anatomical locations, most frequently within the parotid glands or orbital structures. While many primary tumors that spread to these regions arise from neighboring sites such as the scalp, face, oral cavity, or pharynx, distant subclavicular malignancies can also give rise to metastases in these areas. Among such tumors, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the third most frequent source of metastasis to the oral and maxillofacial region. Nevertheless, reports of

PURPOSE: Determine rates of intra-parotid and neck nodal metastasis, identify risk factors for recurrence, and report outcomes in patients with primary high-grade parotid malignancy who undergo total parotidectomy and neck dissection.
MATERIALS & METHODS: Retrospective review of patients undergoing total parotidectomy and neck dissection for high-grade parotid malignancy between 2005 and 2015. The presence and number of parotid lymph nodes, superficial and deep, as well as cervical lymph nodes involved with metastatic disease were assessed. Risk factors associated with metastatic spread to th

BACKGROUND: Regional metastasis of head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (HNcSCC) can be seen in either parotid and/or cervical lymph nodes. The aim of this study was to assess whether there was a difference in prognosis between parotid and cervical nodal metastases.
METHODS: Patients with regional metastasis from HNcSCC were identified from an institutional database. Disease-specific (DSS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models.
RESULTS: Five hundred and thirty-five patients were identified with median follow-up

OBJECTIVES: To describe a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland that caused obstruction of a salivary gland duct and manifested as a parotid retention cyst.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 21-year-old woman presented with a 5-cm cystic swelling in her left parotid region. Ultrasound examination and a computerized tomography scan showed a clearly outlined parotid cyst. Through a conventional parotidectomy incision, the cyst was excised with parotid gland tissue around the lesion. The patient had an uncomplicated recovery.
RESULTS: Histopathological examination of the resected parotidec

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence and associated factors of pulmonary seed migration after parotid brachytherapy using a novel migrated seed detection technique.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients diagnosed with parotid cancer who underwent permanent parotid brachytherapy from January 2006 to December 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. Head and neck CT scans and chest X-rays were evaluated during routine follow-up. Mimics software and Geomagic Studio software were used for seed reconstruction and migrated seed detection from the original implanted region, respectively. Postimplant dosimetry an

Bilateral variation of the parotid gland is an anatomically rare entity. In this study, we present a 91-year-old female cadaver with aplasia of the parotid gland on the left side of the face and hypoplasia of the parotid gland on the right side of the face. The accessory parotid glands on both sides were of normal size, while bilateral submandibular glands were found to be larger than normal. The surgical anatomy of the parotid gland is very important because this region of the face is a complex structure intertwined with important vessels and nerves. Patients with aplasia, atresia, agenesis,

Primary hydatid cyst of the parotid gland is extremely rare, even in the endemic areas. A 23-year-old woman presented with slowly progressive swelling in the right periauricular region. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the head and neck revealed a round, well-demarcated water-density mass in the right parotid gland. At the operation, the cystic mass replacing most of the superficial part of right parotid gland was demonstrated. Superficial parotidectomy was carried out. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of hydatid disease. CT scan is a valuable imaging method for diagnosis

OBJECTIVES: To establish whether there is a requirement for a network policy on management of suspected intraparotid lymphoma, and to answer the question, 'Can lymphoma of the parotid region be adequately diagnosed, typed and treated on the basis of a core biopsy, within the West of Scotland?'
METHOD: We identified 22 patients from the West of Scotland Managed Clinical Network database who had been diagnosed between 2003 and 2005 with lymphoma of the parotid region (nodal or extranodal). These 22 cases were reviewed, assessing specifically their investigation and diagnosis (compared with the

Oncological surgery of the parotid region sometimes requires the sacrifice of the facial nerve (parotid cancers, extensive skin cancers of the face, soft tissue sarcomas). The sacrificed portion of nerve can be reconstructed by a vascularized nerve graft, especially if the patient must undergo radiotherapy after surgery. In those cases, the facial nerve sacrifice is associated to an important loss of substance from the parotid region (skin, masseter, parotid, and sometimes jaw). Chimeric flap permit the reconstruction at the same time of the external skin, soft tissues for the volume (fat or m

Reflex parotitis is a recurrent parotid inflammation caused by an imbalance in the parasympathetic and sympathetic innervation of the salivary gland. This is an unknown but real parotid pathology. However, until now, it had not been reported as a complication of the placement of zygomatic implants. This case report presents the case of a male patient who presented from 1 month postoperatively repetitive edema in the parotid region and salivary alterations.

Warthin's tumor is a benign salivary gland tumor of the parotid gland. Although bilateral or multicentric involvement of the parotid gland is common, extraparotid involvement is seen rarely. The nasopharynx is an unusual region for extraparotid involvement. In this article, we present a 52-year-old male case with a synchronized Warthin's tumor in the bilateral parotid gland and nasopharynx, and we discuss the clinical management of the disease.
