Patterned injuries caused by wooden plank.

Wooden planks of different dimensions are commonly used in construction of buildings, fence of houses, bullock-carts and walls of huts. There is plenty of opportunity for wooden plants to be used as assault implements. Three cases of homicide are reported. In each case a wooden plank was the weapon of offence. The causes of death were respectively anal impalement injury, liver rupture and head injury. Case 1: A 30-year-old man who was beaten by a wooden plank and had it inserted per anum was found alive by a police officer after approximately 48 h. He sustained multiple patterned contused abra

Maternal Longevity is Associated With Reduced Risk but an Earlier Onset of Alzheimer's Disease in Offspring.

IntroductionWhile human longevity has increased significantly over the last 2 centuries, the time spent in good physical and cognitive health has not risen proportionately. The incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) increases with age, but parental longevity is often associated with better offspring health and lower AD risk. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parental longevity and AD.MethodsWe included patients with AD and cognitively healthy subjects (over 75 years), collecting family history data, namely maternal and paternal age at death. We performed a logistic regres

Risk factors associated with morbidity and mortality of pneumonia in Thai children under 5 years.

ARI is the most common cause of illness and death in children under 5 years of age. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death. This prospective study was part of an ARIC project conducted to identify risk factors associated with mortality and morbidity of community acquired pneumonia in Thai children younger than 5 years of age. Study subjects were 267 moderately severe pneumonia who were admitted to hospital. Fifteen percent required a ventilator and were categorized as severe cases. Nine patients (3.4%) died and were categorized in the fatal group. From univariate analysis only, risk factors o

Neonatal respiratory failure due to novel compound heterozygous mutations in the ABCA3 lipid transporter.

The ATP-binding cassette transporter member A3 (ABCA3) is a lipid transporter with a critical function in pulmonary surfactant biogenesis. Biallelic loss-of-function mutations in ABCA3 result in severe surfactant deficiency leading to neonatal respiratory failure with death in the first year of life. Herein, we describe a newborn with severe respiratory distress at birth progressing to respiratory failure requiring transplant. This patient was found to have a maternally inherited frameshift loss-of-function ABCA3 mutation and a paternally inherited synonymous variant in ABCA3 predicted to crea

Obstetric and perinatal outcomes in pregnancies conceived with donor versus partner sperm: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Male-related factors contribute to 30-40% of infertility cases, with donor sperm serving as a critical solution for severe male infertility or paternally inherited genetic disorders. While cryopreservation ensures virological safety, concerns persist regarding sperm DNA damage, oxidative stress, and epigenetic impacts on embryogenesis. Previous studies have shown inconsistent evidence regarding obstetric and perinatal outcomes using donor versus partner sperm. This meta-analysis aimed to compare these outcomes to guide evidence-based clinical decisions. METHODS: To identify studie

Foetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.

Foetal or neonatal thrombocytopenia results from alloimmunisation during pregnancy. Maternal alloantibodies can be formed following exposure to paternally derived human platelet antigens (HPAs) on foetal platelets, in case of incompatible HPA type. These alloantibodies are of the immunoglobulin G subclass and can therefore enter the foetal circulation through active placental transport mediated by the neonatal Fc-receptor. After entering the foetal circulation, these alloantibodies can cause destruction of foetal platelets and potentially damage other foetal cells containing the specific antig

An assessment of the use of interphase FISH with chromosome specific probes as an alternative to cytogenetics in prenatal diagnosis.

We have assessed the effects that would have been observed if we had changed from standard prenatal diagnosis to interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) on our amniocentesis samples. We aimed to estimate the number of cases with aberrations other than chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X and Y, which would not have been detectable by FISH and to assess the potential clinical implications for these cases. In 1687 prenatal diagnoses, 111 cases had abnormal cytogenetic reports (6.5% aneuploidy rate). Out of those 111 cases, 14 had chromosomal abnormalities not detectable by FISH but four of the

Trends of Social Inequalities in the Specific Causes of Infant Mortality in a Nationwide Birth Cohort in Korea, 1995-2009.

The relationship between social disparity and specific causes of infant mortality has rarely been studied. The present study analyzed infant mortality trends according to the causes of death and the inequalities in specific causes of infant mortality between different parental social classes. We analyzed 8,209,836 births from the Statistics Korea between 1995 and 2009. The trends of disparity for cause-specific infant mortality according to parental education and employment were examined using the Cox proportional hazard model for the birth-year intervals of 1995-1999, 2000-2004, and 2005-2009

Environmental risk factors of Wilms tumour: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Wilms tumour (WT) is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in children. Elucidating modifiable risk factors is crucial in identifying venues for primary prevention of the disease. This study aimed to review literature and synthesize environmental risk factors for WT. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies using PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases. Studies were included if they were case-control or cohort studies of children under the age of 20 years at diagnosis and reported Relative Risks (RRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Factors influencing basic vaccination coverage in Myanmar: secondary analysis of 2015 Myanmar demographic and health survey data.

BACKGROUND: Immunization is one of the most effective measures for preventing disease when vaccination coverage is sufficient. Although vaccination coverage is known to be influenced by social and cultural barriers, the determinants of childhood immunization in Myanmar remain poorly understood. This study analyzed factors that influenced complete vaccination status (one dose each for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin and measles and three doses each for diphtheria-pertussis and polio) using 2015 data from the Myanmar Demographic Health and Survey. METHODS: Data from 12 to 23-month-old children and the

A rare case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia caused by compound heterozygous mutations in the EDAR gene.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic disease characterized by abnormal hair, teeth, and sweat gland development. Although most cases of HED display X-linked recessive inheritance, autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive forms also exist. X-linked HED is caused by mutations in the EDA gene, and the autosomal forms result from mutations in either the EDAR gene or the EDARADD gene. In this study, we identified compound heterozygous mutations in the EDAR gene in a Japanese female patient with HED. On the maternal allele is a novel splice donor site mutation of intron 2 leading t

Molecular and behavioral consequences of Ube3a gene overdosage in mice.

Chromosome 15q11.2-q13.1 duplication syndrome (Dup15q syndrome) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by intellectual disability, impaired motor coordination, and autism spectrum disorder. Chromosomal multiplication of the UBE3A gene is presumed to be the primary driver of Dup15q pathophysiology, given that UBE3A exhibits maternal monoallelic expression in neurons and that maternal duplications typically yield far more severe neurodevelopmental outcomes than paternal duplications. However, studies into the pathogenic effects of UBE3A overexpression in mice have yielded conflict

Maternally transmitted severe glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is an embryonic lethal.

Mouse chimeras from embryonic stem cells in which the X-linked glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) gene had been targeted were crossed with normal females. First-generation (F(1)) G6PD(+/-) heterozygotes born from this cross were essentially normal; analysis of their tissues demonstrated strong selection for cells with the targeted G6PD allele on the inactive X chromosome. When these F(1) G6PD(+/-) females were bred to normal males, only normal G6PD mice were born, because: (i) hemizygous G6PD(-) male embryos died by E10.5 and their development was arrested from E7.5, the time of onset of

Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome--pathological manifestations and autopsy considerations.

An 18-year-old university student with Osler-Weber-Rendu disease collapsed in the bathroom. Attempted resuscitation was unsuccessful. Her past history included recurrent epistaxes, mucosal telangiectasias, intracranial arteriovenous malformations with previous hemorrhage, a single pulmonary arteriovenous malformation, recent onset of grand mal seizures, and depression. There was a positive paternal family history. At autopsy the pulmonary arteriovenous malformation was confirmed. In addition, within the brain there were widespread areas of gliosis with hemosiderin deposition and small vascular

Prenatal diagnosis of a deletion of 18q in a fetus associated with multiple-marker screen positive results.

We report here the observations of positive maternal serum screening tests for Down syndrome, cytogenetic and molecular analysis, and dysmorphic fetal features in a pregnancy with 18q-syndrome. A 33-year-old primigravida was referred for genetic counselling because of multiple-marker screen positive results. At 14 weeks' gestation, the woman had a Down syndrome risk of 1:107 calculated from a maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) level of 1.49 multiples of the median (MOM), a total human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) level of 2.42 MOM, and a serum unconjugated oestriol (uE3) level of 0.55 M

Hereditary ovarian carcinoma.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancer in the United States. Although the etiology of ovarian cancer is unknown, a number of factors including advancing age, nulliparity and environmental factors have traditionally been related to risk. More recently, genetic predisposition has been recognized as a strong risk factor for ovarian cancer. Three distinct hereditary syndromes have been identified: (1) breast-ovarian cancer syndrome, (2) hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer, and (3) site-specific ovarian cancer. The mode of inheritance in these families is autosomal do

Spectrum of clinical features associated with interstitial chromosome 22q11 deletions: a European collaborative study.

We present clinical data on 558 patients with deletions within the DiGeorge syndrome critical region of chromosome 22q11. Twenty-eight percent of the cases where parents had been tested had inherited deletions, with a marked excess of maternally inherited deletions (maternal 61, paternal 18). Eight percent of the patients had died, over half of these within a month of birth and the majority within 6 months. All but one of the deaths were the result of congenital heart disease. Clinically significant immunological problems were very uncommon. Nine percent of patients had cleft palate and 32% ha

Ancestral childhood environmental exposures occurring to the grandparents and great-grandparents of the ALSPAC study children.

Background: Cohort studies tend to be designed to look forward from the time of enrolment of the participants, but there is considerable evidence that the previous generations have a particular relevance not only in the genes that they have passed on, their cultural beliefs and attitudes, but also in the ways in which previous environmental exposures may have had non-genetic impacts, particularly for exposures during fetal life or in childhood. Methods: To investigate such non-genetic inheritance, we have collected information on the childhoods of the ancestors of the cohort of births comprisi
