Conventional versus high-flow oxygen therapy in dogs with lower airway injury.

Dogs with lower airway pathology that present in respiratory distress often receive oxygen therapy as the first line of treatment regardless of the underlying cause. Conventional "low-flow" systems deliver oxygen with a maximum flow rate of 15 L/minute. Traditionally, when an animal's respiratory status does not improve with conventional oxygen therapy and treatments for underlying disease, options might be limited to either intubation and mechanical ventilation or humane euthanasia. High-flow oxygen therapy (HFOT) has been gaining popularity in veterinary medicine as an alternative route of o

Canine renal cortical necrosis and haemorrhage following ingestion of an Amitraz-formulated insecticide dip.

Amitraz is a formamidine compound used in veterinary medicine as a topical dip to control ticks and mites on dogs and livestock. A 10-year-old female Scottish terrier was presented following the accidental oral administration of a dip containing amitraz. This case report describes the clinical signs, treatment and pathology of this dog. Clinical signs of toxicity from amitraz result from stimulation of alpha2-adrenergic receptors. Amitraz is seldom fatal because the effects can be reversed by alpha2-adrenergic antagonists. The dog recovered from the amitraz toxicity but died 5 days later from

Femoral arterial embolism of an airgun pellet in a dog.

A 4-y-old male Labrador Retriever was submitted for autopsy following radiographic examination by the owner, a veterinarian, which had revealed 3 embedded projectiles. Autopsy revealed a single entrance wound on the left flank. Using flap-by-flap dissection, the trajectory of the projectile was traced through the skin and lumbar musculature to its location where it had perforated the abdominal aorta, causing fatal acute hemoperitoneum. Remarkably, the copper-coated pellet (Diabolo) was found in the lumen of the right femoral artery, consistent with projectile embolism. No external trauma was p

Rapport de cas Ossifying fibroma in the cervical vertebra of a dog.

The objective of this study was to describe the clinical signs, neurologic examination findings, diagnostic imaging results, and pathologic diagnosis of ossifying fibroma in the cervical vertebra of a dog. A 3-year-old spayed female Pembroke Welsh corgi dog exhibited severe cervical pain and left-sided postural reaction deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a lobulated contrast enhancing mass associated with the C6 cervical vertebra. Due to the lack of response to pain medications, humane euthanasia was elected, and histopathologic evaluation of the mass revealed a fibro-osseous

Palmitoylethanolamide in Human and Animal Obesity.

Background: With the increase in the middle-aged population and sedentary lifestyle, a high incidence of obesity has been observed in humans and in animals. Obesity is consequent or correlated to multiple diseases, such as metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD), diabetes, dyslipidemia, etc. The attention of many researchers is focused on understanding the specific cellular mechanism and the role of inflammation, particularly chronic, in the development of this pathology as well as its link with dysmetabolic conditions, which seriously affect the survival of both humans an

Pulse-wave analysis during routine blood pressure measurement shows potential to distinguish between sinus and nonsinus rhythm.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether pulse-wave analysis (PWA) performed by trained evaluators facilitates detection of nonsinus rhythm. ANIMALS: Same-day, high-definition oscillometry pulse-wave data and ECG results of 155 animals (144 dogs and 11 cats) were analyzed. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 18 participants from various backgrounds, all of whom received PWA training. The ability to distinguish between sinus and nonsinus rhythms was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The pulse-wave datasets were divided into 5 ECG categories. Agreement b

The immunopathology of canine vector-borne diseases.

The canine vector-borne infectious diseases (CVBDs) are an emerging problem in veterinary medicine and the zoonotic potential of many of these agents is a significant consideration for human health. The successful diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these infections is dependent upon firm understanding of the underlying immunopathology of the diseases in which there are unique tripartite interactions between the microorganism, the vector and the host immune system. Although significant advances have been made in the areas of molecular speciation and the epidemiology of these infections and

Optimized monoclonal antibody panel for accurate immunohistochemical detection of haematopoietic cell populations in animal species.

BACKGROUND: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) has emerged as an essential tool in characterizing neoplastic diseases, playing a crucial role in both human and veterinary medicine. Despite the increased demand for specific diagnoses in veterinary oncology, the full potential of IHC has been hampered by the reduced number of specific cross-reactive antibodies recognising their antigens in diverse animal species. This study addresses this limitation by testing the cross-reactivity of a panel of 69 antibodies, including one in-house generated monoclonal antibody, using IHC on routinely fixed formalin-fix

Clinicopathologic findings and causes of mortality in 100 pet rabbits from the Canary Islands, Spain, 2011-2022.

The European domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus) is commonly kept as a pet, with increasing popularity among pet owners. Despite the increasing body of information on lagomorph medicine and pathology, comprehensive published compilations of causes of mortality in pet rabbits are limited. We analyzed health disorders, pathology findings, and most probable causes of death in 100 pet rabbits submitted to the Anatomopathological Diagnostic Service of the Veterinary School of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, from 2011 to 2022. We reviewed clinical

Collaborative wildlife disease outbreak investigation and response at Bells Swamp Victoria, February 2023.

In February 2023, a report of morbidity and mortality in waterbirds triggered a collaborative regional wildlife disease outbreak investigation and response, led by Parks Victoria. Triage, rehabilitation and diagnosis of sick and dead birds were undertaken by Zoos Victoria (ZV), Agriculture Victoria, Vets for Compassion, Wildlife Victoria and Melbourne Veterinary School (MVS). The field response focused on collection of sick and dead birds for wildlife welfare, for diagnosis, and to reduce environmental contamination. Botulism was suspected, based on clinical signs and lack of significant gross

Paleopathological Changes in Animal Bones from Croatian Archaeological Sites from Prehistory to New Modern Period.

A special part of archaeology, so-called archaeozoopathology or veterinary paleopathology is dedicated to studies of paleopathological changes in animal remains and contributes to the knowledge of ancient veterinary medicine and the history of diseases. In our study, we analyze paleopathological changes determined by gross observation and diagnostic imaging in the animal material originating from eight archaeological sites in Croatia. A standard archaeozoological analysis was carried out and specimens with visually detected macrostructural changes were radiographed. In total, 50 animal remains

Biochemical detection of fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia in affected rat hypothalamus tissues by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

It is difficult to determinate the cause of death from exposure to fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia in forensic casework. Here, we present a state-of-the-art study that employs Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to investigate the hypothalamus tissues of fatal hypothermic, fatal hyperthermic and normothermic rats to determine forensically significant biomarkers related to fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia. Our results revealed that the spectral variations in the lipid, protein, carbohydrate and nucleic acid components are highly different for hypothalamuses after exposure to fat

Feline cryptococcosis: a retrospective evaluation.

Cryptococcus neoformans causes the most common form of feline systemic fungal disease. Nineteen cats with cryptococcosis were seen at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania between April 1986 and May 1995. Compared to other studies, these 19 cases showed increased neurological and ophthalmological involvement. Males were affected more often than females. Season and environment appeared to influence time of onset or presentation to the hospital. Clinical pathology did not show typical changes. It is possible that the organism was present frequently in the urine but was mistak

Radiological Landmarks as an Aid in the Interpretation of Rodent Skull Extra-Oral Projections.

Knowledge of the radiographic anatomy of rodent skulls is essential for accurately interpreting extra-oral radiographs, a non-invasive diagnostic tool commonly used in veterinary practice. Due to the complexity of the skull and the potential for distortion in two-dimensional views, a systematic evaluation of anatomical structures is necessary. This study identifies the most clinically relevant anatomical landmarks on standard extra-oral radiographic views of the skull and mandible in various rodent species, including a cane rat, two woodchucks, and seven common mole rats. Specimens were evalua

Surgical approach to a biliary tract cyst in an elderly cat.

Choledochal cyst or biliary tract cyst is a pathological condition characterized by abnormal dilation of the hepatobiliary system. In veterinary medicine, case descriptions and histological characterizations of this biliary malformation are scarce, requiring reliance on data from human medicine. A presumptive diagnosis typically involves imaging studies, with histopathological examination required for confirmation. Treatment often involves surgical intervention to remove the cyst and restore normal biliary function. A 15-year-old mixed-breed domestic female cat presented with vomiting and anor

Endocannabinoid system and phytocannabinoids in the main species of veterinary interest: a comparative review.

Since the discovery of the endocannabinoid system and due to the empirical evidence of the therapeutic effects on several illnesses both in humans and animals that follow the administration of exogenous cannabinoids (i.e., phytocannabinoids), numerous studies have been conducted. These investigations aimed to identify the expression and distribution of cannabinoid receptors in healthy and pathologic organs and tissues of different animal species and to define the interactions of phytocannabinoids with these receptors. In the last decade, pharmacokinetics, efficacy and tolerability of many Cann

Rethinking brachycephaly: Anatomical implications and health considerations in lagomorphs.

Brachycephaly in domestic rabbits is increasingly perceived by welfare organizations as associated with significant health complications, particularly oral pathologies. Despite this perception, comparative anatomical research into rabbit brachycephaly is limited compared to that of dogs and cats, compelling an in-depth examination of its health implications. This review aims to fill notable knowledge gaps by summarizing existing literature on the prevalence of health disorders associated with the morphological implications of brachycephalic rabbit breeds, particularly dental diseases.
