Cerebral arterial compliance in patients with internal carotid artery disease.

BACKGROUND: A decrease in arterial compliance of the internal carotid artery has been associated with an increased risk in ipsilateral ischaemic stroke. However, so far, no technique has been validated to monitor the compliance of intracerebral arteries (Ca) in patients with carotid artery disease. In this study, we sought to monitor Ca in patients with unilateral symptomatic disease and to determine its variations during changes in PaCO(2). METHODS: We studied 18 patients with unilateral symptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis >50% or occlusion. Patients underwent monitoring of arterial

Home infusion therapy is safe and enhances compliance in patients with mucopolysaccharidoses.

The transition to home infusion therapy is described in 11 patients with mucopolysaccharide (MPS) disorders initially treated with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in an out-patient infusion center. Home therapy was well tolerated with no infusion-related reactions (IRR) occurring in 671 patient-weeks of treatment. In addition, compliance with the weekly treatment regimen was improved in patients on home therapy.

Follow-up of patients with celiac disease: achieving compliance with treatment.

Celiac disease is the only autoimmune condition for which we know the environmental trigger: gluten. Complete removal of gluten from the diet in a patient with celiac disease should result in symptomatic, serologic, and histologic remission. However, compliance with the gluten-free diet, especially in the United States, is extremely challenging. Compliance can be measured both noninvasively, by dietary history and measurement of serum antibodies, and invasively, by using endoscopic and histologic criteria. The advantages and disadvantages of these various modalities are discussed. The highest

Determination of total effective vascular compliance in patients with sepsis syndrome.

Changes in capacitance vessels have important consequences on cardiac filling pressure and fluid volume distribution in patients with sepsis syndrome. Vascular compliance may be evaluated from the slope of the relationship between changes in total blood volume (deltaTBV) and changes in central venous pressure (deltaCVP) during acute volume expansion (450 ml of gelatin fluid over 6 min), i.e., from the deltaTBV/deltaCVP ratio. The mean ratio (ml x mm Hg-1 x kg-1) was 2.03 +/- 0.21 in control subjects, 1.43 +/- 0.25 in mechanically ventilated patients without sepsis syndrome, and 0.94 +/- 0.24 i

Compliance with CPAP therapy in patients with the sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is the treatment of choice for the sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome. Compliance with this relatively obtrusive therapy has not been well studied. METHODS: Usage of CPAP was investigated in 54 patients with sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (median 36 (range 7-129) apnoeas + hypopnoeas/hour slept) over the first 1-3 months after starting CPAP therapy. In all cases CPAP usage was monitored by hidden time clocks that indicated for how long the machines were switched on--that is, the CPAP run time. In 32 patients the time at which the CP

Improving compliance with prednisone therapy in pediatric patients with rheumatic disease.

Compliance with regimens for pediatric rheumatic diseases is often poor, and few studies have evaluated strategies for improving compliance. This study utilized relatively simple behavioral and educational strategies to improve compliance with prednisone for three patients with pediatric rheumatic diseases (systemic lupus erthematosus and dermatomyositis). These strategies were implemented in a pediatric rheumatology setting and resulted in improved compliance that was maintained at 6- and 12-month follow-up. During baseline, patients were found to be overmedicating as well as undermedicating.

A Head of the Curve: Investigating Helmet Therapy Compliance in Patients With Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to helmet therapy is critical for achieving optimal cranial molding following endoscopic strip craniectomy (ESC). Limited data exist on factors influencing compliance, which may inform surgical planning and family counseling. This study evaluated clinical and sociodemographic factors associated with helmet therapy compliance in infants with sagittal craniosynostosis. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients with nonsyndromic sagittal craniosynostosis who underwent ESC with postoperative helmet therapy between 2015 and 2024. Patients with open cranial vau

Cerebrovascular compliance during progressive hypotension in patients with autonomic failure.

The compliant nature of cerebral blood vessels may represent an important mechanical protection for sustained cerebral perfusion during reductions in arterial blood pressure (ABP). However, whether the rise in cerebrovascular compliance (Ci) with falling ABP persists and exhibits a threshold effect remains unknown. Therefore, we analyzed Ci changes during graded head-up tilt (HUT) in individuals with autonomic failure (AF), a group that tolerates graded and progressive reductions in ABP. Finger ABP and middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv) were recorded from five patients with AF (61 ±

Clinical Predictors of Medication Compliance in Patients With Acute Herpetic Neuralgia.

PURPOSE: Pain is one of the most common and harmful symptoms experienced by individuals with acute herpetic neuralgia (AHN). In this population, studies to determine the causes that affect patients taking medications compliance are rare. This study aimed to construct a predictive model for medication compliance of patients with AHN and to verify its performance. DESIGN AND METHODS: In this prospective study of 398 patients with AHN who were discharged from a tertiary hospital with medications from July 2020 to October 2022, we used logistic regression analysis to explore the predictive factor

Hypertensive patients compliance for clinician counseling in dessie city, Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Clinicians counsel patients on medication adherence and behavioral risk factors to achieve optimal blood pressure levels and reduce the risk of hypertension-related complications. There has been little research on the risk of health-related quality of life and perceived social support in hypertensive patients' compliance with clinician counseling. As a result, the purpose of this study is to assess hypertensive patients' compliance to clinician counseling. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted of 384 hypertensive patients during their clinical visit using simple random

Patient's Adherence and Compliance and Quality of Life During/After VIT.

Adherence and compliance, respectively considered as a more positive, proactive behavior, resulting in a patient's lifestyle change to follow a daily regimen, and, as a more enforced response to an external command, are a critical aspect of any medical therapy, since it is estimated that less than half of the patients who are prescribed a therapy perform it, respecting the doses and duration. As far as aeroallergen immunotherapy is concerned, current data show that adherence is respected in about 50% of subcutaneous immunotherapy and in percentages even lower than 20% in sublingual immunothera

Factors associated with medical orders' compliance among hyperlipidemic patients.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery diseases are one of the most important issues in health and social problems. One of the amendable risk factors in development of these diseases is high cholesterol which can be modified through correction of lifestyle (diet change, playing sports, and usage of lipid-lowering drugs). Patients' compliance to therapeutic programs is the most important element to achieve this goal. This study aims to define the factors associated with compliance to medications among hyperlipidemic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a descriptive analytical study conducted on 82 h

Endometrial cancer patients and compliance with genetic counseling: room for improvement.

INTRODUCTION: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for the presence or absence of DNA mismatch repair (MMR) proteins in tumor samples is a quick and relatively inexpensive method to screen for Lynch syndrome (LS). At our institution we have found that >20% of patients lack expression of MMR proteins and >10% would be expected to benefit from genetic counseling (GC). However, compliance with referral to GC is poor. Therefore, we set out to analyze the reasons for noncompliance, hypothesizing that it could be due to a perception of a low risk for developing other cancers. METHODS: All patients with endom
