Multivariate resting-state functional connectivity predicts response to cognitive behavioral therapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for many with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, response varies considerably among individuals. Attaining a means to predict an individual's potential response would permit clinicians to more prudently allocate resources for this often stressful and time-consuming treatment. We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging from adults with OCD before and after 4 weeks of intensive daily CBT. We leveraged machine learning with cross-validation to assess the power of functional connectivity (FC) patterns to

Visual adaptation provides objective electrophysiological evidence of facial identity discrimination.

Discrimination of facial identities is a fundamental function of the human brain that is challenging to examine with macroscopic measurements of neural activity, such as those obtained with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). Although visual adaptation or repetition suppression (RS) stimulation paradigms have been successfully implemented to this end with such recording techniques, objective evidence of an identity-specific discrimination response due to adaptation at the level of the visual representation is lacking. Here, we addressed this issue wit

Multimodal detection of sleep apnoea using electrocardiogram and oximetry signals.

A method for the detection of sleep apnoea, suitable for use in the home environment, is presented. The method automatically analyses night-time electrocardiogram (ECG) and oximetry recordings and identifies periods of normal and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). The SDB is classified into one of six classes: obstructive, mixed and central apnoeas, and obstructive, mixed and central hypopnoeas. It also provides an estimated apnoea, hypopnoea and apnoea-hypopnoea index. The basis of the method is a pattern recognition system that identifies episodes of apnoea by analysing the heart variability,

Early online detection of upper airway obstructions in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) patients.

The obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a diagnosis related to snoring and caused by a collapse in the upper airway. OSAS patients suffer from desaturated oxygen levels during sleep as well as daytime sleepiness. In this paper, we propose a system able to identify and detect respiratory disorders online based on monitoring the airflow amplitude from a sleeping OSAS patient. By the use of chi(2)-analysis and a Haar wavelet transform on signals performed offline, reference templates indicating the specific apnoea pattern for four different patients are constructed and used for similarity

Altered anatomical patterns of depression in relation to antidepressant treatment: Evidence from a pattern recognition analysis on the topological organization of brain networks.

BACKGROUND: Accumulated evidence has illuminated the topological infrastructure of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the changes of topological properties of anatomical brain networks in remitted major depressive disorder patients (rMDD) remain an open question. The present study provides an exploratory examination of pattern changes among current major depressive disorder patients (cMDD), rMDD patients and healthy controls (HC) by means of a pattern recognition analysis. METHODS: Twenty-eight cMDD patients (age range: 22-54, mean age: 39.57), 15 rMDD patients (age range: 23-53, mean

Viral priming of cell intrinsic innate antiviral signaling by the unfolded protein response.

The innate response to a pathogen is critical in determining the outcome of the infection. However, the interplay of different cellular responses that are activated following viral infection and their contribution to innate antiviral signalling has not been clearly established. This work shows that flaviviruses, including Dengue, Zika, West Nile and Tick-borne encephalitis viruses, activate the unfolded protein response before transcription of interferon regulatory factor 3 induced genes. Infection in conditions of unfolded protein response priming leads to early activation of innate antiviral

Why Physiology Is Critical to the Practice of Medicine: A 40-year Personal Perspective.

Accuracy in diagnosis trumps all other elements in clinical decision making. If diagnosis is inaccurate, management is likely to prove futile if not dangerous. Knowledge of physiology provides a periscope for identifying abnormalities beneath the skin responsible for clinical manifestations on the surface. Expert diagnosticians suspect disorders based on pattern recognition and automatic retrieval of knowledge stored in memory. A superior diagnostician looks at the same findings other clinicians see but thinks of causes that others have not imagined. Solving clinical mysteries depends on a cli

Urologic considerations in the newborn.

The management of the neonate will continue to hold a special interest for the urologic surgeon because of the many unique aspects of neonatal physiology and pathology that must be considered. I would anticipate that the number of referrals will continue to increase, from awareness of familial patterns of urologic disorders, from recognition of obstructive uropathy with prenatal ultrasound, and from improved survival of very sick neonates by our pediatric colleagues. The urologist who wishes to participate in the care of these sick newborns must become familiar with the unique aspects of care

A unique pattern of cortical connectivity characterizes patients with attention deficit disorders: a large electroencephalographic coherence study.

BACKGROUND: Attentional disorders (ADD) feature decreased attention span, impulsivity, and over-activity interfering with successful lives. Childhood onset ADD frequently persists to adulthood. Etiology may be hereditary or disease associated. Prevalence is 5% but recognition may be 'overshadowed' by comorbidities (brain injury, mood disorder) thereby escaping formal recognition. Blinded diagnosis by MRI has failed. ADD may not itself manifest a single anatomical pattern of brain abnormality but may reflect multiple, unique responses to numerous and diverse etiologies. Alternatively, a stable

Non-Invasive Triage of Bladder Outlet Obstruction and Detrusor Underactivity in Men With Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: A Narrative Review and Conceptual Framework for Depth-Aware Multimodal Transcutaneous Testing.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiating bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) from detrusor underactivity (DU) remains a major unmet need in the management of lower urinary tract symptoms in men. Although pressure-flow urodynamics provide a definitive physiological classification, their invasiveness limits their widespread use. We reviewed why current non-invasive approaches have failed to achieve consistent clinical adoption and explored a pathway toward clinically useful pre-urodynamic triage. METHODS: This hypothesis-generating narrative review synthesized evidence on non-invasive BOO/DU assessment, usin

Biophysical Models With Adaptive Online Learning for Direct Neural Control of Prostheses.

Direct neural control of multi-articulating prosthetic hands is critical for achieving dexterous manipulation in unstructured environments. However, such control - predicting continuous movements over independent degrees of freedom - remains confined to research settings. In contrast, pattern recognition systems are widely employed for their simple, user-friendly training procedures, though their limitation to a set of discrete whole-hand poses restricts functionality. To bridge this gap, we designed a direct neural controller and a training procedure to support adaptive retraining, enabling u

A comprehensive review on the influence of light on signaling cross-talk and molecular communication against phyto-microbiome interactions.

Generally, plant growth, development, and their productivity are mainly affected by their growth rate and also depend on environmental factors such as temperature, pH, humidity, and light. The interaction between plants and pathogens are highly specific. Such specificity is well characterized by plants and pathogenic microbes in the form of a molecular signature such as pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) and microbes-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), which in turn trigger systemic acquired immunity in plants. A number of Arabidopsis mutant collections are available to investigate molecu

Change in Odor Identification Impairment is Associated with Improvement with Cholinesterase Inhibitor Treatment in Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Anticholinergic challenge can induce odor identification impairment that indicates Alzheimer's disease pathology. OBJECTIVE: To determine if decline in odor identification ability with anticholinergic challenge can predict improvement with donepezil, a cholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI), in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: At baseline, the University of Pennsylvania Smell identification Test (UPSIT) was administered before and after an anticholinergic atropine nasal spray challenge. Donepezil was started at 5 mg daily, increased to 10 mg daily if tolerated, an

Response properties underlying selectivity for the rate of frequency modulated sweeps in the auditory cortex of the mouse.

This study focused on the response properties underlying selectivity for the rate of frequency modulated (FM) sweeps in the auditory cortex of anesthetized C57bl/6 (C57) mice. Linear downward FM sweeps with rates between 0.08 and 20 kHz/ms were tested. We show that at least two different response properties predict FM rate selectivity: sideband inhibition and duration tuning. Sideband inhibition was determined using the two-tone inhibition paradigm in which excitatory and inhibitory tones were presented with different delays. Sideband inhibition was present in the majority (88%, n = 53) of neu

Rate change detection of frequency modulated signals: developmental trends.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine developmental trends in rate change detection of auditory rhythmic signals (repetitive sinusoidally frequency modulated tones). METHODS: Two groups of children (9-10 years old and 11-12 years old) and one group of young adults performed a rate change detection (RCD) task using three types of stimuli. The rate of stimulus modulation was either constant (CR), raised by 1 Hz in the middle of the stimulus (RR1) or raised by 2 Hz in the middle of the stimulus (RR2). RESULTS: Performance on the RCD task significantly improved with age. Also, the dif

Enhanced temporal non-linearities in human object-related occipito-temporal cortex.

To what extent does neural activation in human visual cortex follow the temporal dynamics of the optical retinal stimulus? Specifically, to what extent does stimulus evoked neural activation persist after stimulus termination? In the present study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the resulting temporal non-linearities across the entire constellation of human visual areas. Gray-scale images of animals, houses and faces were presented at two different presentation rates - 1 and 4 Hz - and the fMRI signal was analyzed in retinotopic and in high order occipito-tempo

Sigma-movement and optokinetic nystagmus elicited by stroboscopically illuminated stereopatterns.

Sigma-movement is an apparent movement seen when a stationary periodic visual pattern of the period PS is illuminated stroboscopically at the flash frequency fS and smooth gaze pursuit eye movements are performed across the pattern at an angular velocity Ve = PS X fS deg X S-1. Sigma-movement leads to an optokinetic nystagmus (Sigma OKN) which in turn sustains Sigma-movement perception. (1) Sigma-movement was also seen in an apparent three-dimensional periodic stripe pattern generated by two periodic monocular stimulus patterns with a certain degree of horizontal binocular disparity. (2) Sigma

Pitfalls and artifacts in [18F]-FDG PET imaging in children with lymphoma.

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with 2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([18F]-FDG) is a well-established imaging tool in adult oncology and is increasingly utilized also in pediatric oncology due to its ability to combine functional and anatomic information, thereby enhancing diagnostic accuracy and improving patient management. However, [18F]-FDG uptake in children differs physiologically from adults, and this radiotracer is not tumor-specific, with uptake occurring in various benign conditions such as inflammation, infection, and trauma. Orthographic Priming in Braille Reading as Evidence for Task-specific Reorganization in the Ventral Visual Cortex of the Congenitally Blind.

The task-specific principle asserts that, following deafness or blindness, the deprived cortex is reorganized in a manner such that the task of a given area is preserved even though its input modality has been switched. Accordingly, tactile reading engages the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) in the blind in a similar way to regular reading in the sighted. Others, however, show that the vOT of the blind processes spoken sentence structure, which suggests that the task-specific principle might not apply to vOT. The strongest evidence for the vOT's engagement in sighted reading comes from o

Neural adaptation to thin and fat bodies in the fusiform body area and middle occipital gyrus: an fMRI adaptation study.

Visual perception can be strongly biased due to exposure to specific stimuli in the environment, often causing neural adaptation and visual aftereffects. In this study, we investigated whether adaptation to certain body shapes biases the perception of the own body shape. Furthermore, we aimed to evoke neural adaptation to certain body shapes. Participants completed a behavioral experiment (n = 14) to rate manipulated pictures of their own bodies after adaptation to demonstratively thin or fat pictures of their own bodies. The same stimuli were used in a second experiment (n = 16) using functio
