Currarino-Silverman syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by premature fusion of manubrio-sternal joint and the sternal segments, resulting in a high carinate chest deformity; it is frequently associated with congenital heart disease. Among the various heart lesions reported in this syndrome, mitral valve disease and coarctation of the aorta have not yet been described (to our knowledge). Our report consists of five children with this syndrome, four of whom had mitral valve disease, with an associated coarctation of the aorta in one patient. The fifth patient had an innocent heart murmur.

Numerous publications have emerged on the application of erector spinae plane block in adult population. There are few reports of the use of this block in pediatric patients. The objective is to report 2 cases of adolescents, one diagnosed with pectus excavatum and the other one with pectus carinatum undergoing reconstructive surgery in which a bilateral single-shot erector spinae plane block was performed as an analgesic technique. The block was performed before surgery under general anesthesia in lateral decubitus position, guided by ultrasound using 20ml of 0.25% bupivacaine per side. After

BACKGROUND: The absence of standardized criteria for grading pectus carinatum (PC) severity hampers clinical decision-making and insurance approvals. Although the Haller Index (HI) is frequently used, it underestimates deformity by measuring the distance to the posterior sternum rather than the point of maximal protrusion. This study introduces the Maximum Protrusion Index (MPI), a novel metric designed to more accurately reflect PC severity.
METHODS: MPI is defined as the transverse chest diameter divided by the anterior-posterior distance from the vertebral column to the point of maximal ch

BACKGROUND: Patients with pectus carinatum have lower quality of life and self-esteem than their peers. We assessed the impact of dynamic compression system bracing on quality of life in patients with pectus carinatum.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study on patients aged 10-21 years. We assessed quality of life using the Child Health Questionnaire-87, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-6, the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF, the 36-Item Short Form Survey, and the Single-Step Questionnaire adapted for pectus carinatum.
RESULTS: Between March 2013 and March 2016, 225

OBJECTIVES: The frequency of sternochondroplasty in cases of pectus carinatum (PC) has increased due to greater surgeon experience and modified surgical techniques. PC deformity does not usually cause cardiopulmonary malfunction or impairment. However, whether cardiopulmonary function changes after surgical repair remains a matter of controversy. The aim of our prospective study was to determine if surgery changes preoperative cardiopulmonary function.
METHODS: Nineteen patients (16 males, 3 females) were enrolled in a prospective, open-label, single-arm, single-centre clinical trial (Impact

PURPOSE: Cryoanalgesia has shown to have safety and efficacy as an adjunct post-operative pain management for Nuss procedure. One retrospective study reported its efficacy for analgesia with the Ravitch procedure, with improved pain scores and decreased length of stay versus thoracic epidural. We describe our initial experience with the use of cryoanalgesia for an open repair of pectus carinatum.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients who received cryoanalgesia during an open repair of pectus carinatum from 2016 to 2019 at our institution. We recorded pain sc

BACKGROUND: To assess the impact of manipulation and a tailored program for compressive bracing on the quality of life of patients with flexible pectus carinatum.
METHODS: Two hundred forty-nine sequential patients attending a clinic for assessment of pectus carinatum deformities underwent outpatient manipulation and then followed a prescribed schedule of continuous external compressive bracing but without significant progressive tightening.
RESULTS: There was successful sustained reduction of the deformity in 244 patients with high reported rates of concordance (98%) and satisfaction (94%).

Pectus carinatum (PC) is one of the most common chest wall anomalies, which is characterized by the protrusion of the anterior chest wall including the sternum and adjacent costal cartilages. Mildly patients suffer from mental problems such as self-abasement, while severely suffering patients are disturbed by significant cardiopulmonary symptoms. The traditional Haller index, which is widely used clinically to evaluate the severity of PC, is deficient in diagnosis efficiency and classification. This paper presents an improved Haller index algorithm for PC: first, the contour of the patient che

OBJECTIVE: Bracing for pectus carinatum (PC) has emerged as an alternative to surgical correction. However, predictive factors for bracing remain poorly understood, as much of the data have been reported from small series.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed a prospective dataset in patients with PC who underwent dynamic compression bracing (DCB) from July 2011 to July 2016. Bracing was initiated in patients > 10 years of age with a significant PC and desire for bracing. Data were analyzed for those observed two or more times after the brace was fitted to the patient.
RESULTS: A total of 503

BACKGROUND: We used an Abramson technique for minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum in patients who preferred surgery to brace therapy, had been unsuccessfully treated via brace therapy, or were unsuitable for brace therapy because of a rigid chest wall.
METHODS: Between July 2011 and May 2015, 16 patients with pectus carinatum underwent minimally invasive surgery.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 24.35±13.20 years (range, 14-57 years), and all patients were male. The percentage of excellent aesthetic results, as rated by the patients, was 37.5%, and the percentage of good r

Noonan syndrome is a genetic condition that can present with complex thoracic defects, the management of which often presents a surgical challenge. We present the surgical approach applied to a severe combined excavatum/carinatum deformity that had resulted in a Z-type configuration of the chest in a 9-year-old girl with Noonan syndrome.

PURPOSE: This report describes a 5-year experience with a novel, minimally invasive surgical technique for treatment of pectus carinatum.
METHODS: From June 2002 to August 2007, 40 patients underwent operation to correct pectus carinatum by pressure applied through a curved steel bar that was placed subcutaneously anterior to the sternum, via lateral thoracic incisions. The bar is inserted through a polyvinyl chloride tube with the convexity facing posteriorly. The polyvinyl chloride tube is positioned presternally by trocar. Subperiosteal wires attach small fixation plates to the ribs latera

BACKGROUND: Although patients with pectus carinatum (PC) often experience moderate to severe symptoms, there are sparse published data about the indications for correction, the newer techniques of surgical repair, and the results. This study reviews clinical experience with new, less extensive, open operative techniques for repair of PC.
STUDY DESIGN: Since 1970, 154 patients (119 men and 35 women) with symptomatic PC (mean severity index 1.76) underwent correction at the UCLA Medical Center using modifications of the Ravitch repair. The last 60 consecutive patients had a less extensive open

Seventy patients with pectus carinatum were examined. All the patients demonstrated the minimal signs of connective tissue deficiency. The ECG readings showed incomplete blockade of the bundle of His, ventricular extrasystole, WPW and CLC syndromes, and metabolic alterations in the myocardium. Mitral valve prolapse was discovered in 97% of cases by echocardiography. There was a decrease in myocardial contractility along with changes in cardio- and hemodynamics, which were more marked in patients having the corporocostal type of pectus carinatum. The correlation of these values with chest defor

OBJECTIVES: Dynamic compression bracing (DCB) systems have been proven safe and effective for non-surgical treatment of pectus carinatum (PC). This study aimed to identify potential prognostic factors for correcting PC using DCB.
METHODS: From 2011 to 2020, all patients treated with DCB for PC at the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne were reviewed retrospectively. The primary outcome was a ≤50% reduction in pectus height (PH) at the 6-month follow-up, measured by radiation-free imaging. Two statistical models adjusted for compliance with treatment were used.
RESULTS: A total of 297 patien

The study involved 1342 primary school students aged 7-14 years who applied to Ankara, a primary care center for general health check-up between 2006 and 2007. Forty-three students, 35 of whom had PE and 8 of whom had PC, were subjected to thorax measurement. All 43 students underwent pulmonary function tests (PFT).The prevalence rate of PC was 0.6%, and of PE, 2.6%. The thorax widths of the groups were similar (P = 0.273). The thorax circumference and depth of PE group were lower than those of the controls (P < 0.05). The probability rate of abnormality in PFT scores of PE group was statistic

Surgical correction of pectus excavatum et carinatum in a series of adult patients is described. The relationship between deformity of the anterior chest wall and cardiac, respiratory and digestive disturbances is assessed. The indications for surgical management are explained. Reference is also made to the satisfactory morphological and respiratory function results observed on follow-up. An unusual cases of pectus excavatum associated with straight back is separately described. Here again, successful surgical management was achieved, coupled with disappearance of functional disturbances and i

Pectus carinatum is a chest wall deformity, sometimes associated with physical signs and symptoms, but always associated to significant psychological distress. Surgical correction used to be the only solution, and was therefore only indicated for the most severe cases. Non-surgical approaches have been developed and improved during the last 15-20 years. A paradigm shift occured when the medical community realized that, despite the wall deformity, the chest wall was not completely rigid, but flexible and capable of remodeling. Several bracing devices and protocols are available as of today. Thi
