Friends in Focus: Developing a Peer-to-Peer Intervention for Adolescents.

Against a background of a higher prevalence of adolescent substance use compared to use among adults, UNODC searched for a peer-to-peer intervention since peer influence is one of the most persuasive factors at the age range of 14-17 year old. Friends in Focus is an intervention of six two-hour sessions delivered by young trainers to peers aged 14-17, aiming for the latter to have enhanced interaction with their friends. The trainers are equipped with a standardized practical manual and a three-day interactive training. The article narrates the design process, grounded in prevention science an

Shaping Citizenship in the Classroom: Peer Influences on Moral Disengagement, Social Goals, and a Sense of Peer Community.

Despite the important role of peers in the social process of classroom citizenship, the peer influence related to moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community remain unclear. To this end, it was examined to what extent youth become similar to their friends in moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community. Participants were 283 South Korean third to sixth graders (Mage = 9.60 years, SD = 0.97; 51.6% girls) who completed an online survey for moral disengagement, social goals, the sense of peer community and friendship network across the beginning (Time 1) a

Coproducing an Online Platform for People With Long-Term Physical Health Conditions: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: There is relatively limited psychological support dedicated to people living with long-term physical health conditions and subthreshold depressive disorder. Online peer support may be an appropriate intervention to help bolster patients' mental well-being to prevent progression of their symptoms to major depressive disorder. For interventions to be successfully integrated into the self-management routines of people with long-term physical health conditions, they should be co-designed to ensure that they align with the wants and needs of the target audience. OBJECTIVE: This study a

Dual adversarial deconfounding autoencoder for joint batch-effects removal from multi-center and multi-scanner radiomics data.

Medical imaging represents the primary tool for investigating and monitoring several diseases, including cancer. The advances in quantitative image analysis have developed towards the extraction of biomarkers able to support clinical decisions. To produce robust results, multi-center studies are often set up. However, the imaging information must be denoised from confounding factors-known as batch-effect-like scanner-specific and center-specific influences. Moreover, in non-solid cancers, like lymphomas, effective biomarkers require an imaging-based representation of the disease that accounts

Thinking you're different matters more for belonging than being different.

Belonging to a community is essential for wellbeing, but potentially unattainable for those dissimilar from a group. In the present work, we ask whether belongingness is better predicted by acting and thinking like peers or believing you act and think like peers. Students (N = 1181) reported their belonging and how much they, their friends, and an "average student" endorsed local behavioral norms and general values. We calculated difference scores for behaviors and values capturing perceived similarity to the average, actual similarity to the average, and accuracy around the norm. Key results

Insights and Recommendations From Moderators and Community Members for Keeping Online Peer Support Safe: Thematic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Online peer support can help people living with long-term physical health conditions to manage their mental well-being. Although the potential negative events that can occur and risks associated with web-based peer communities are well recognized, our understanding of how best to moderate these spaces is relatively limited, particularly with regard to new communities. Previous work has focused on the experiences of either moderators or community members. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the perspectives of both members and moderators of a new online peer support community to

Peer E-Cigarette and Cannabis Use and Adolescent Anxiety: Findings from a Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents are typically motivated to conform to peer influence, including substance use behaviors, and it is likely that adolescents who deviate from their peers' substance use behaviors might experience stress and anxiety. METHOD: A mixed-methods approach was utilized to examine the relationship between peer e-cigarette and cannabis use and symptoms of generalized anxiety among a diverse sample of 12th grade students in Los Angeles County, California, USA (N = 1,867, Mage = 17.04, SD = 0.43). Multivariable logistic regression models examined the associations between peer substan

The role of online peer support in pregnancy: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Online peer support groups offer virtual spaces where members can share experiences, seek advice, and offer mutual support. While in-person peer support in pregnancy has shown benefits such as improved well-being and reduced isolation, limited research has explored online peer support groups. This scoping review aims to examine the types, contexts, and perceived benefits of online peer support for pregnant people. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in five databases (Embase, Medline PsychInfo, MIDIRS and CINAHL) from inception to December 2024. Eligible studies examined on

Recovery Colleges or Something Different? The Development and Evaluation of a Reflection Tool for Recovery Colleges in the Netherlands.

Recovery Colleges (RCs) are increasingly implemented worldwide, with a fidelity measure recently developed in the United Kingdom (UK). However, RCs may vary based on their operating contexts. In the Netherlands, a key deviation is that RCs are often peer-run rather than co-produced with mental healthcare providers, as outlined in the fidelity measure. This study assessed the measure's suitability in the Dutch context, leading to the development of a reflection tool (Phase 1) which was subsequently evaluated (Phase 2). The development phase involved focus groups with peer facilitators and coord

'Acting it out really makes it stick in your brain': Educating students for patient portrayal during peer simulation.

INTRODUCTION: Peer simulation is a method of simulation-based education (SBE) whereby students are educated to portray patient roles for peers. This potentially delivers accessible, high-impact, low-cost SBE that could be utilised in lower resourced settings. However, the most effective method of educating students to portray patient roles is currently not known. This study aimed to determine if the method of education for patient portrayal impacts portrayal accuracy, empathy development, and academic performance. Students' perspectives of education approaches were explored. METHODS: A semest

Who has different-race friends, and does it depend on context? Openness (to other), but not agreeableness, predicts lower racial homophily in friendship networks.

People form relationships with people from their own racial groups, a phenomenon called racial homophily, which reduces interracial contact and exacerbates inequality and prejudice. Although viewed as arising from environmental factors, we argue that racial homophily also involves individual choice and, thus, personality factors. We address three major issues. First, are interpersonal concerns (Agreeableness) and intergroup concerns (Openness) differentially relevant to cross-race friendships? Second, are current conceptions of Openness sufficient, or do we need lower-level facets more attuned

Support Groups in Scleroderma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review presents evidence on support group effectiveness in common diseases, research on support groups in systemic sclerosis (SSc), and work underway by the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network in collaboration with patient organizations to train SSc support group leaders in order to improve support group access and the experiences of support groups for members and leaders. RECENT FINDINGS: Giving and receiving emotional and practical support from others with SSc is an important reason that individuals with SSc attend support groups, but many patients cann

[Perspective of peer helpers regarding their experience animating a self-treatment program for panic disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Support groups can help to reach individuals with anxiety disorders who are not or are only partly obtaining health services. The present study is based on a program that involves peer helpers as animators of a self-treatment group (Zéro-ATAQ). Their perspective has been documented in order to identify the aspects of the program which can be improved. METHODS: Eleven peer helpers led the 12 sessions of the program, which was dispensed in four regions of Quebec for 32 persons having panic disorders with agoraphobia. The perspectives of ten peer animators were documented based on a s

Creating together, growing together: a qualitative study of adolescent experiences in an inclusive, co-creative performing arts project.

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a formative period marked by exploration, identity formation, and a growing need for belonging. Co-creative performing arts practices may support learning and relationship-building across diverse groups of young people. This study explored how adolescents without disabilities, enrolled in mainstream educational programmes, experienced and reflected on their participation in a long-term, inclusive, co-creative performing arts project (SPOR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative inductive design with three focus groups was used, grounded in phenomenological, hermeneutic,

Peer-coaching interventions for stroke survivors - what works and how: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Peer-led interventions show potential in supporting stroke survivors' recovery, but are described using inconsistent terms and definitions in the current literature. AIMS: Adopting "post-stroke peer-coaching intervention" as the overarching term, this study aims to synthesise the characteristics and outcomes of existing interventions for stroke survivors to develop a standardised definition and a consolidated summary of findings. SUMMARY OF REVIEW: In this scoping review, we searched 6 databases to identify relevant studies from peer-reviewed journal articles published between Ja

[Recovery from anorexia nervosa in psychiatry].

The treatment of anorexia nervosa is often a long-term process, involving a series of care stages both in and out of the hospital. The presentation of the clinical case of a patient who has become a volunteer peer supporter reflects a long journey of care and life. Approaching care as a supportive rehabilitation process is essential given the risk of social withdrawal associated with this disorder.

Peer support for people living with hepatitis B virus-A foundation for treatment expansion.

Chronic hepatitis B infection (CHB) affects 300 million people worldwide and is being targeted by the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), working towards elimination of hepatitis B virus (HBV) as a public health threat. In this piece, we explore the evidence and potential impact of peer support to enhance and promote interventions for people living with CHB. Peer support workers (PSWs) are those with lived experience of an infection, condition or situation who work to provide support for others, aiming to improve education, preventi

The impact of Danmaku-based and synchronous peer feedback on L2 oral performance: A mixed-method investigation.

Advancement of research in education has propelled the augmentation of theoretical and practical knowledge in learning-oriented feedback. In recent years, the channels, modes, and orientations of feedback became manifold. Copious empirical evidence from the body of literature supported the strength of feedback in enhancing learning outcomes and promoting the motivation of learners. However, compared to the popularity in implementation and fruitfulness of findings in other educational domains, the application of state-of-the-art technology-enhanced feedback in fostering students' L2 oral abilit
