PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence and severity of complications related to continuous pentobarbital (PB) infusion for sedation in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, chart review study. All patients admitted to the PICU from January 1997 through June 1998 who received continuous IV PB infusion for sedation (n = 8) were included.

Electrophysiological recordings of the H-reflex and nonnociceptive flexion reflex were obtained from pentobarbital-anesthetized Intact rats and from both, anesthetized and unanesthetized groups of Acute and Chronic Spinal rats. Results showed that the flexor, but not H-reflex, of Chronic Spinal rats was significantly larger than that of all other groups, which did not differ among themselves. The antispastic drug baclofen dose-dependently decreased the flexion response of Chronic Spinal rats (A(50)=4.3 mg/kg+/-2.1 and 9.0 mg/kg).

The effect of empenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, on pentobarbital (PTB)-induced sleeping time was examined in mice and rats. In mice, pretreatment with empenthrin prolonged PTB-induced sleeping time in a dose-dependent manner. Murine gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor beta 1, beta 2, and beta 3 subunits were expressed in Xenopus oocytes and studied using the two electrode voltage clamp technique. Possible neuroanatomical substrates mediating some of the effects seen with thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in the pentobarbital (PB) narcotized rat were examined. This was accomplished by microinjecting picomole concentrations of TRH into 20 different brain sites.
