Vaginal organisms in prepubertal children with and without vulvovaginitis. A vaginoscopic study.

In a prospective clinical and microbiological study covering 67 prepubertal children the vaginal flora of 31 asymptomatic children was compared to 36 children suffering from abnormal vaginal discharge and/or vulvovaginitis. Vaginoscopy was employed to obtain bacteriological specimens without contamination. Swabs were inoculated into prereduced transportmedia (PORT A CUL, BBL) and cultured aerobically and anaerobically. The most prevalent aerobic organisms were Staphylococcus epidermidis. Enterococci and Escherichia coli; the predominant anaerobic bacteria were Peptococcus and Peptostreptococcu

Teenage boy with high fever and rash: what could we be missing?

A 15-year-old boy was admitted to a local hospital with high fever, generalised rash and a mild sore throat. He was started on intravenous flucloxacillin and 12 hours later develops a sustained low diastolic blood pressure (DBP), unresponsive to fluid volume expansion and cardiovascular support with dopamine. Intravenous clindamycin was added and transportation to paediatric intensive care unit arranged. Dopamine dosing was increased and norepinephrine infusion was added subsequently with immediate stabilisation of DBP. A sacrococcygeal pilonidal abscess was identified, requiring prompt surgic

[Orbital cellulitis with concomitant bacteraemia (Stenotrophomonas maltophilia) as a complication of an intraorbital foreign body--a case report and literature review].

This is a case report of a 53-year-old man, who presented in the Department of Ophthalmology with signs of orbital cellulitis on the right side, which developed over a few days following an injury. Computed tomography revealed inflammatory infiltration of the orbital soft tissues, penetrating to the sella turcica. Orbital swab and blood cultures revealed the presence of Enterobacter and Peptostreptococcus spp. as well as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, respectively. Review of the literature relevant to the presented case was performed based on the PubMed databasesearch, using the following keywo

[The microorganisms associated with bacterial vaginosis as a cause of tubal sterility].

Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most widespread disturbances of the normal state of the vagina of women of reproductive and menopausal age. This condition is highly disregarded due to its moderate and not always clear clinical manifestation. The disturbed proportion of microorganisms in vagina is shown in the strong decrease or lack of lactobacilli and a spread of associated with bacterial vaginosis microorganisms. G. vaginalis, Mobiluncis spp., Bacteroides spp. (without B. fragilis), Peptostreptococcus spp., Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum. The condition is a predisposition to a

[Short-term oral chemoprophylaxis before intestine surgery. Quantitative determination of bacteria and fungi in stool specimens (author's transl)].

The methods of quantitative analysis of aerobe and anaerobe microbes and fungi stool specimens are described. The results of the studies in health people are compared to the results in patients undergoing surgical treatment of intestinal tract. A group of these patients received Neomycin and Bacitracin orally as short-time chemoprophylaxis to diminish possible woundinfection and/or sepsis. After oral medication germs as Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides and Clostridium (not Cl. perfringens) are reduced or lost, Veillonella, Eubacterium, Fusiformis, Peptostreptococcus and Lactobacillus were suppress

[Post-marketing surveillance of antibacterial activities of cefozopran against various clinical isolates--I. Gram-positive bacteria].

As a post-marketing surveillance, the in vitro antibacterial activities of cefozopran (CZOP), an agent of cephems, against various clinical isolates were yearly evaluated and compared with those of other cephems, oxacephems, penicillins, and carbapenems. Changes in the bacterial sensitivity for CZOP were also evaluated with the resistance ratio calculated with breakpoint MIC. Sixteen species (1,913 strains) of Gram-positive bacteria were isolated from the clinical materials annually collected from 1996 to 2000, and consisted of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA; n = 178), met

The microbiology and antibiotic treatment of peritonsillar abscesses.

Pus from 53 peritonsillar abscesses was cultured and associations between the microbiological results and clinical data were investigated with the aim of developing a clinical protocol for treatment. A positive culture grew in 85% of quinsies and of these 16% produced aerobes and 84% anaerobes. Penicillin-resistant organisms were grown from 32% of patients and all but one of these organisms (Haemophilus influenzae) was sensitive to metronidazole. There was no association between clinical presentation and cultured organism which could guide treatment, hence we recommend penicillin and metronida

Femoral osteomyelitis caused by oral anaerobic bacteria with mixed bacteremia of Campylobacter rectus and Parvimonas micra in a chronic periodontitis patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter rectus is a gram-negative rod, and Parvimonas micra is a gram-positive coccus, both of which are oral anaerobes that cause chronic periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis can cause bacteremia and systemic diseases, including osteomyelitis. Hematogenous osteomyelitis caused by anaerobic bacteria is uncommon, and to date, there have been no reports of mixed bacteremia with C. rectus and P. micra. Here, we report the first case of osteomyelitis of the femur caused by anaerobic bacteria with mixed bacteremia of C. rectus and P. micra caused by chronic periodontitis. CASE PR

Intracranial complications of sinusitis in childhood.

Complications of sinusitis in children, such as intracranial abscess formation, are uncommon and are often clinically unremarkable in comparison to similar disease processes in adults. Between 1983 and 1991, 443 children were admitted to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, for treatment of sinusitis. Fourteen of these children presented with intracranial extension of the infection and abscess formation. A retrospective review of these patients revealed that the risk of developing an intracranial abscess secondary to sinusitis was 3%. The management of these patients included

Localization and identification of root canal bacteria in clinically asymptomatic periapical pathosis.

Twenty-one teeth with clinically asymptomatic periapical pathosis (class 3) were extracted and the isolation, identification, and localization of bacteria in the root apex were examined. Mixtures involving several bacteria were isolated from more than 60% of the cases. Scanning electron microscopy revealed bacterial masses to be associated with the apical part of the root canal, but not with the area of apical foramen or on the surface of root apex. Our results indicate that the bacteria in class 3 cases may be derived from organisms which colonized before or during endodontic treatment, but n

[A case of peptostreptococcal meningitis associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage and subdural hematoma].

A very rare case of peptostreptococcal meningitis associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage and subdural hematoma was reported. A 25-year-old man was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital on November 6, 1984 with a few day's history of headache and low grade fever. On admission, he had high grade fever (39.2 degrees C) and tachycardia (110/min). There were no neurological deficits other than neck stiffness and Kernig's sign. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which was obtained through lumbar puncture showed watery clear appearance, white cell count of 32/3 mm3 (mononuclear: polymorphonuclear = 4:5), prote

Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria in genital disease.

In a study of Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria in non-specific vaginitis (NSV) and other genital disease 89 patients attending a genital medicine clinic had vaginal samples examined for conventional pathogens and for quantitative analysis of G vaginalis and aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora. The overall incidence of G vaginalis was 20%; G vaginalis (mean concentration 7.0 log10/g of secretion) occurred predominantly in patients with NSV (57%) but also in sexual contacts of non-specific urethritis (NSU) (37.5%) and in patients with other conditions (11.8%). Female genital tract bacterial coisolates with Candida albicans in patients without clinical vaginitis.

OBJECTIVE: In vitro, Candida albicans has demonstrated the ability to inhibit replication of selected bacteria. Little information exists on the impact of C. albicans on the vaginal bacterial flora in vivo. The purpose of this study is to identify the coexisting bacterial flora when C. albicans is isolated from vaginal cultures submitted to a hospital-based testing facility for reasons other than vulvovaginitis. METHODOLOGY: All specimens (240) received from ambulatory care clinics over a six-month period were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and Candida species. Those specimens su

Microbiota-derived IPA protects against colitis by regulating intestinal HMGCS2-mediated ketogenesis to facilitate mucosal healing.

The gut microbiota sustains intestinal homeostasis, yet how microbial metabolites direct epithelial repair remains unclear. Here we identify indole-3-propionic acid (IPA), a tryptophan-derived bacterial metabolite, as a key regulator of mucosal healing. IPA activates PPARα in intestinal epithelial cells, enhancing transcription of the ketogenic enzyme HMGCS2 and boosting β‑hydroxybutyrate (BHB) production. BHB in turn stimulates LGR5⁺ intestinal stem cells, accelerating epithelial regeneration. Using germ-free models and the IPA‑producer Peptostreptococcus russellii, we show that dietary trypt

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of anaerobic bacteria identified from clinical specimens of diseased dogs and cats.

We aimed to clarify antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of anaerobes from diseased companion animals. Bacterial identification was based on the Japanese 2012 guidelines for the testing of anaerobic bacteria. AST was performed using the broth microdilution method. The anaerobe-containing samples collected from 2014 to 2018 included blood (anaerobe recovery rate, 5.0%), bile (9.4%), joint fluids (0.6%), pleural effusions (42.6%), ascites (64.1%), cerebrospinal fluids (3.0%), and punctures (75.0%). The anaerobes identified included Bacteroides spp. (33.2%), Peptostreptococcus spp. (19.6%), Prev

The bacteriology of salivary gland infections.

The parotid gland is the salivary gland most commonly affected by inflammation. However, infection of the salivary glands can occur in any of the glands. The most common pathogens associated with acute bacterial infection are Staphylococcus aureus and anaerobic bacteria. The predominant anaerobes include: anaerobic Gram negative bacilli (eg, pigmented Prevotella and Porphyromonas); Fusobacterium spp; and Peptostreptococcus spp. In addition, Streptococcus spp (including Streptococcus pneumoniae) and aerobic and facultative Gram-negative bacilli (including Escherichia coli) have been reported.
