This prospective study was done to determine whether a new cleft palate repair utilizing uvular transposition improved speech outcome as measured objectively by a speech pathologist. In the uvular transposition procedure, the palate was lengthened with tissue from the uvula by a double-opposing Z-plasty; an intravelar veloplasty was performed, and two-thirds of the mass of the uvula was transposed to the nasal surface of the soft palate. This procedure facilitates velopharyngeal closure by significantly lengthening the palate, anatomically reconstructing the muscles of the palate, and decreasi

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal dysphagia and laryngeal dysfunction are complications of lung and heart transplantation. However, there is a lack of understanding around pre-operative function and an absence of standardized assessment protocols. We aimed to trial a pre- and post-operative protocol for assessing voice and swallowing function.
METHOD: A prospective, longitudinal study of 14 adults undergoing investigation for lung or heart transplantation was conducted at a tertiary referral hospital. Patients were assessed pre-surgery and up to 6 months afterwards. The protocol involved phonation ta

OBJECTIVE: The therapeutic effects of voice therapy, including relaxation exercises, semi-occluded vocal tract training, and vocal function strengthening exercises, have been studied in patients with vocal fold paralysis following thyroid surgery. However, optimal timing for initiating voice therapy remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effects and patient satisfaction associated with early voice therapy initiated within one month post-thyroidectomy in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 63 patients diagnosed with unilater

The present study investigated the types of inaccurate responses, i.e., Don't Know, Semantic, Visual (nonlinguistic), Phonological, Circumlocutory, and Perseverative, made on the Hooper Visual Organization Test by a heterogeneous sample of 68 brain-damaged and 63 substance abuse patients. The mean age of the brain-damaged and substance abuse groups were 46.0 (SD=13.5) and 43.7 (SD=12.9) yr., respectively. Analysis showed that the brain-damaged group made significantly more visual and perseverative responses than the substance abuse group. There was significantly more variance in the Visual res

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate are more liable to have obstructive sleep apnea than children with normal palate due to narrow airways. Tonsillar hypertrophy is a common cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea; hence, it is not surprising to be encountered during cleft palate repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of tonsillectomy and Furlow palatoplasty performed as a 1-stage operation in patients presenting with submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and tonsillar hypertrophy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven pediatric patients with SMCP and hypertrophied tonsils were i

Previous investigations employing electropalatography (EPG) have identified articulatory timing deficits in individuals with acquired dysarthria. However, this technology is yet to be applied to the articulatory timing disturbance present in Parkinson's disease (PD). As a result, the current investigation aimed to use EPG to comprehensively examine the temporal aspects of articulation in a group of nine individuals with PD at sentence, word and segment level. This investigation followed on from a prior study (McAuliffe, Ward and Murdoch) and similarly, aimed to compare the results of the parti

AIMS: Unrepaired clefts still regularly occur in resource-poor countries as a result of limited health-care access. The purpose of the present study was to report resonance, airflow and articulation characteristics following delayed (≥8years) primary palatal closure.
METHODS: Fifteen Ugandan participants with cleft (lip and) palate (CP±L) were included as well as 15 age- and gender-matched Ugandan subjects without clefts. Palatal closure was performed at a mean age of 15;10 years using the Sommerlad technique. Speech evaluations were carried out on a single occasion postoperatively (mean age:

SIGNIFICANCE: This study reveals that children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) demonstrate subtle but measurable impairments in visual motor and visual perceptual skills. Importantly, strabismus surgery may yield functional gains in these domains, providing clinical insights beyond ocular alignment outcomes.
PURPOSE: To assess visual motor and visual perception skills in children with IXT compared with matched controls, and evaluate post-operative changes after surgical intervention.
METHODS: Prospective longitudinal case-control study. Visual motor and visual perception were evaluated usi

INTRODUCTION: Children born with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP±L) tend to use less oral pressure consonants and more glottal sounds in their babbling. The purpose of very early palatal repair (i.e., one-stage palatal closure prior to 6 months of age) is to make the palate functional before the onset of speech acquisition to reduce the anchoring of wrong patterns in the child's developing phonological system. As a result, less compensatory articulation errors are expected to be present. Currently, no detailed longitudinal speech outcomes after very early palatal closure are availab

BACKGROUND: Hard palate cleft closure has been associated with maxillary hypoplasia. The Schweckendiek procedure offers delayed hard palate closure to avoid early subperiosteal dissection and palatal scarring. This study sought to compare single-stage versus delayed hard palate closure for speech outcome and maxillary growth.
METHODS: A retrospective outcome study was performed of unilateral cleft lip and palate patients with either delayed hard palate repair with a pinned-retained speech prosthesis (Schweckendiek repair) (group 1, delayed hard palate repair, 1978 to 1983) or single-stage cle

INTRODUCTION: The goal of this work was to objectively elucidate the vibratory characteristics of vocal fold paralysis (VFP) using high-speed digital imaging (HSDI).
METHODS: HSDI was performed in 29 vocally healthy subjects (12 women and 17 men) and in 107 patients with VFP (40 women and 67 men). Then, the HSDI data were evaluated by visual-perceptual rating, single-line kymography, multiline kymography, laryngotopography, and glottal area waveform analysis.
RESULTS: Patients with VFP compared with vocally healthy subjects revealed more frequent incomplete glottal closure, greater asymmetry

Forty-three patients with a diagnosis of unilateral vocal fold immobility underwent thyroplasty type I with the Montgomery Thyroplasty Implant System. Preoperative and postoperative evaluations were completed by means of videostroboscopic, acoustic, and aerodynamic measures. Clinicians' perceptions of vocal quality and patients' satisfaction with the surgery and vocal quality were determined. Improvements after surgery were observed for glottal closure, vocal fold amplitude, mucosal wave activity, average intensity, maximum intensity range, maximum phonation time, glottal airflow, average soun
