Phyllodistomum kupermani n. sp. from the European perch, Perca fluviatilis L. (Perciformes: Percidae), and redescription of Phyllodistomum macrocotyle (Lühe, 1909) with notes on the species diversity and host specificity in the European Phyllodistomum spp. (Trematoda: Gorgoderidae).

BACKGROUND: European species of the large genus Phyllodistomum Braun, 1899 had historically been erected based solely on morphological characters. Unfortunately, many of them are still poorly known and inadequately described. Molecular approaches are critical to delineate species which were impossible to differentiate based on morphology alone. METHODS: New samples of adult Phyllodistomum spp. were collected from the urinary bladder and/or ureters of European freshwater fishes and fixed to conduct a light and scanning electron microscopy study, and to obtain sequences of nuclear (ITS2 spacer

First morphological and molecular characterization of Eustrongylides excisus larvae (L4) (Nematoda: Dioctophymatidae), with description of induced oxidative-inflammatory changes and tissue injury in European perch (Perca fluviatilis) from the Volga River (Astrakhan, Russia).

Eustrongylides spp. are helminths with a multiple-host life cycle that can infect aquatic oligochaetes, various freshwater fish, fish-eating birds, and accidental mammalian hosts, including humans. This work aimed to morphologically and molecularly characterize the larval stages of Eustrongylides spp. isolated from European perch, and to outline the oxidative/nitrosative stress and histoarchitecture changes induced by active larval migration or tissue-encapsulation. Eighty Perca fluviatilis were collected from the Volga River (Astrakhan, Russia). Thirty-seven were tentatively grouped as infect

Biomagnification of mercury and selenium in two lakes in southern Norway.

We have investigated bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of both mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) in two lakes in southern Norway to reveal a suggested mitigating effect of Se on Hg biota accumulation. The study included analysis of total Se (Se), total Hg (Hg), and methyl-mercury (MeHg) in water, littoral and pelagic invertebrates and perch (Perca fluviatilis), together with stable isotope analysis (δ(15)N and δ(13)C) in biota. Mean dissolved Se ranged from 22 to 59ngL(-1), while Hg and MeHg in lake water ranged from 1 to 3ngL(-1) and 0.01 to 0.06ngL(-1). Biota Se and Hg concentrations (dry we

Characterization of the decision network for wing expansion in Drosophila using targeted expression of the TRPM8 channel.

After emergence, adult flies and other insects select a suitable perch and expand their wings. Wing expansion is governed by the hormone bursicon and can be delayed under adverse environmental conditions. How environmental factors delay bursicon release and alter perch selection and expansion behaviors has not been investigated in detail. Here we provide evidence that in Drosophila the motor programs underlying perch selection and wing expansion have different environmental dependencies. Using physical manipulations, we demonstrate that the decision to perch is based primarily on environmental

Uptake and distribution of radioiodine, and the effect of ambient nitrate, in some fish species.

125I uptake by the thyroid was most pronounced in the smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), perch (Perca fluviatilis), rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), roach (Rutilus rutilus) and bleak (Alburnus alburnus). Unlike other tissues, only the muscle in the species studied no relative accumulation of 125I as compared to the ambient water. The Crusian carp (Cyprinus carassius) indicated the lowest levels of accumulation of 125I among the species tested. Thyroid radioiodine concentration was independent of the length of the fish in the rainbow trout and perch. In the rainbow trout, however, the liver and muscle

Beak wiping stereotypies are correlated with neophobia and lack of enrichment in captive house sparrows (Passer domesticus).

Behavioural syndromes are suites of correlated behaviours at the population or species level that can affect how wild animals respond to their environments, including potentially stressful situations such as captivity. In this study, we assessed whether beak wiping, a stereotyped anxiety-linked behaviour where birds wipe their beaks on a perch in a "windshield wiper" motion, was correlated with another anxiety-linked behaviour, neophobia towards novel objects presented with food, in captive house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We predicted that more neophobic sparrows would also exhibit more be

The definition of pneumonia, the assessment of severity, and clinical standardization in the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health study.

To develop a case definition for the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) project, we sought a widely acceptable classification that was linked to existing pneumonia research and focused on very severe cases. We began with the World Health Organization's classification of severe/very severe pneumonia and refined it through literature reviews and a 2-stage process of expert consultation. PERCH will study hospitalized children, aged 1-59 months, with pneumonia who present with cough or difficulty breathing and have either severe pneumonia (lower chest wall indrawing) or very seve

How Model Organisms and Model Uncertainty Impact Our Understanding of the Risk of Sublethal Impacts of Toxicants to Survival and Growth of Ecologically Relevant Species.

Understanding how sublethal impacts of toxicants affect population-relevant outcomes for organisms is challenging. We tested the hypotheses that the well-known sublethal impacts of methylmercury (MeHg) and a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB126) would have meaningful impacts on cohort growth and survival in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) populations, that inclusion of model uncertainty is important for understanding the sublethal impacts of toxicants, and that a model organism (zebrafish Danio rerio) is an appropriate substitute for ecologically rele

Interordinal relationships of birds and other reptiles based on whole mitochondrial genomes.

Several different groups of birds have been proposed as being the oldest or earliest diverging extant lineage within the avian phylogenetic tree, particularly ratites (Struthioniformes), waterfowl (Anseriformes), and shorebirds (Charadriiformes). Difficulty in resolving this issue stems from several factors, including the relatively rapid radiation of primary (ordinal) bird lineages and the lack of characters from an extant outgroup for birds that is closely related to them by measure of time. To help resolve this question, we have sequenced entire mitochondrial genomes for five birds (a rhea,

[The effect of temperature changes on evoked potentials of the fish olfactory bulb].

Perches were kept at 10 degrees C and fixed in a chamber through which water was perfused. During the experiment the water temperature was changed. The potentials induced by electric stimulation of the olfactory nerve were recorded from the dorsal surface of the olfactory bulb. The oscillations of the evoked potentials separated into several components when the temperature was lowered. Six components were found in the evoked response of the olfactory bulb at 8 degrees C.

Behavioral and physiological response of the passerine bird Agelaioides badius to seeds coated with imidacloprid.

Neonicotinoids are globally used insecticides, and there are increasing evidence on their negative effects on birds. This study is aimed at characterizing the behavioral and physiological effects of the neonicotinoid imidacloprid (IMI) in a songbird. Adults of Agelaioides badius were exposed for 7 days to non-treated peeled millet and to peeled millet treated with nominal concentrations of 75 (IMI1) and 450 (IMI2) mg IMI/kg seed. On days 2 and 6 of the trial, the behavior of each bird was evaluated for 9 min by measuring the time spent on the floor, the perch, or the feeder. Daily millet consu

Methylmercury concentrations in fish from tidal waters of the Chesapeake bay.

Striped bass (Morone saxatilis), white perch (Morone Americana), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were collected in the Chesapeake Bay mainstem and tributaries and analyzed for total mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) content. Striped bass are anadromous, whereas white perch and largemouth bass are resident species, and the largemouth bass are also restricted to the tidal fresh portion of the Bay. Total Hg and MeHg concentrations in striped bass increased with fish size, and large fish (>7.5 kg wet weight) tended to have MeHg concentrations of 300 ng g(-1) or greater. On average,

The first report of two Sphaeromyxa species (Myxozoa: Bivalvulida) from the South China Sea: Sphaeromyxa scorpaena n. sp. from long-fingered scorpionfish (Scorpaenodes albaiensis) and Sphaeromyxa theraponi from tiger perch (Terapon jarbua).

Two myxosporean species of the genus Sphaeromyxa were isolated from the gallbladders of marine fish in the South China Sea. Sphaeromyxa scorpaena n. sp. was collected from Scorpaenodes albaiensis Evermann and Seale, 1907. The mature myxospores were arcuate-shaped with tapered to pointed ends, and a length of 14.1 ± 0.7 (13.8-15.1) μm and a width of 5.2 ± 0.3 (4.9-5.8) μm. The polar capsules (PCs) were pyriform with a length of 3.2 ± 0.2 (3.1-3.5) μm and a width of 1.6 ± 0.1 (1.4-1.8) μm, and containing ribbon-like polar filaments irregularly folded 1.5-2.5 turns. The skin of birds' feet: Morphological adaptations of the plantar surface.

The skin of the foot provides the interface between the bird and the substrate. The foot morphology involves the bone shape and the integument that is in contact with the substrate. The podotheca is a layer of keratinized epidermis forming scales that extends from the tarsometatarsus to the toe extremities. It varies in size, shape, amount of overlap and interacts with the degree of fusion of the toes (syndactyly). A study of toe shape and the podotheca provides insights on the adaptations of perching birds. Our analysis is based on micro-CT scans and scanning electron microscopy images of 21

Hand-like autonomous flying robot for airborne grasping and interaction.

Birds' extraordinary aerial agility and environmental interaction enable complex tasks such as mid-air hunting, perching, and nest-building, inspiring the development of advanced aerial robots with similar manipulation capabilities. However, existing platforms often face challenges such as large size, heavy payloads, end-effector torque interference, and limited functionality, severely restricting their practical deployment. Drawing inspiration from the biological, structural, and actuation characteristics of human hands, we propose a hand-like robot that integrates flight and grasping, demons

Environmental Complexity: Additional Human Visual Contact Reduced Meat Chickens' Fear of Humans and Physical Items Altered Pecking Behavior.

Increased environmental complexity can improve animal welfare, depending on the resources provided and use by the animal. We provided chickens either with physical items that posed no biosecurity risk and were inexpensive (balls, chains, perches and rope) (P; n = 36) or additional visual human contact (10 min daily) (HC; n = 36) compared to farm-like standard control groups (C; n = 36) with 3 pens per treatment. Additional human contact reduced fear of humans at 35 days of age, but not general fearfulness. P birds required more inductions to induce tonic immobility compared to HC and C birds a

Participation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase and MAP kinase pathways during Anabas testudineus oocyte maturation.

Possible involvement of cyclic nucleotide dependent protein kinase (PKA) and MAP kinase (MAPK) pathways during oocyte maturation in Anabas testudineus was investigated. Pre-incubation with phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), inhibited 17α, 20β-DHP-induced GVBD dose dependently. PKA inhibitor, H89 could induce resumption of meiosis independent of 17α, 20β-DHP, in dose and duration dependent manner. The maximum response was obtained with the dose of 10 μM of H89 and 95% of cells underwent GVBD within 18 h. Moreover, stimulation with 17α, 20β-DHP inhibited endog

Multi-scaled response of groundwater nitrate contamination to integrated anthropogenic activities in a rapidly urbanizing agricultural catchment.

Anthropogenic activities have a significant contribution to groundwater nitrate contamination at multiple spatial scales in urbanizing agricultural catchments, while how to derive the optimal researching scale and explore the relative importance among anthropogenic activities for groundwater nitrate contamination still remains challenging. In this study, 165 perched groundwater and 120 shallow groundwater samples were collected in two urbanizing agricultural catchments, to explore anthropogenic activity effects on groundwater nitrate contamination crossing multiple spatial scales, integrating

Patterns and trends of fish mercury in New York State.

In the mid-2000s a survey was conducted to evaluate fish mercury in lakes across New York State. Approximately 10 years later a second survey examining adult sportfish from 103 lakes and reservoirs was conducted to evaluate the response of fish mercury to recent declines in US mercury emissions. Of those lakes, 43 were part of the earlier survey and were examined to determine if mercury concentrations in four popular sport species, Yellow Perch, Walleye, and Small- and Largemouth Bass, declined in response to decreasing emissions. Water samples were also collected at 35 of these lakes and anal
