The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of gellan gum (GG) on the cold gelation of large yellow croaker roe protein isolate (pcRPI). The water-holding ability and storage modulus of the pcRPI-GG binary gels increased with the GG concentration, where the storage modulus of the pcRPI-0.2% GG gel was approximately 30.7 times that of the pure pcRPI gel. Compare to the other binary gels, pcRPI-0.2% GG gels exhibited a lower lacunarity and higher junction density, with a denser, more aggregated microstructure. Consequently, curcumin was embedded in pcRPI-0.2% GG gels, and simulated gastr

In this paper, we present a brief anatomical description of the torus longitudinalis and the valvula cerebelli in a percomorph fish, the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) based on the analysis of serial brain sections stained by paraldehyde fuchsin, Groat's hematoxylin-picroindigocarmin and cresyl violet. The existence of a small undescribed fiber tract directly bridging the ventral torus longitudinalis and the granular layer of the rostral valvula cerebelli is also reported. This small fiber tract was observed in its integrity on a few transverse sections providing that the angle of sectionin

Inflammation is the first response of animals to infection or tissue damage. Sparus aurata (Perciformes) was the first fish species shown to possess histamine-containing mast cells at mucosal tissues. We report a separation protocol for obtaining highly enriched (over 95% purity) preparations of fish mast cells in high numbers (5-20 million mast cells per fish). The peritoneal exudate of S. aurata is composed of lymphocytes, acidophilic granulocytes, macrophages and mast cells. We separated the lymphocyte fraction through discontinuous density gradient centrifugation. The remaining cells were

Climate change and coastal thermal pollution are increasingly threatening marine fish populations, yet species specific thermal tolerance data remain limited for many economically important species. This study evaluated the thermal tolerance of rabbitfish (Siganus fuscescens) by comparing fish acclimated to 23 ℃ and 29 ℃ using both the Critical Thermal Maximum (CTmax) and Upper Incipient Lethal Temperature (UILT) protocols. The findings revealed that in CTmax experiments, fish acclimated at 23 ℃ showed a significantly lower in CTmax and semi-lethal temperature as heating rates increased from +

The effects and mechanisms of four polysaccharides (xanthan gum (XG), pectin (PE), curdlan (CUR), and chitosan (CS)) at 2 % (w/w) concentrations on the gelation of Spanish mackerel surimi were investigated. The gel strength, hardness and chewiness of surimi added with XG and PE decreased by 33.6 %-84.9 %, while those of the CUR and CS groups increased by 6.2 % to 38.9 %. Additionally, the incorporation of PE reduced water holding capacity and increased cooking loss. According to the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative framework, gels supplemented with XG and PE met levels 5

The mangrove red snapper (Lutjanus argentimaculatus) is a commercially important marine fish species in the Indo-Pacific region. Despite its significant economic value for aquaculture, existing genomic resources remain fragmented, limiting the advancement of molecular breeding and functional genomic studies. Here, we present a gap-free, telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome assembly of L. argentimaculatus, generated using a hybrid approach combining PacBio HiFi, Oxford Nanopore ultra-long reads and Hi-C technology. The resulting assembly comprises exactly 24 scaffolds spanning 1.03 Gb, perfectly m

Understanding the developmental sequence characteristics of the vertebral and appendicular skeletons of the larvae and juveniles of Larimichthys crocea (Naozhou population) can provide theoretical basis for seedling cultivation, environmental adaptation, and taxonomic identification. The cartilage-bone double staining method was used to stain, observe, and analyse the vertebrae, pectoral fins, anal fins, caudal fins, and dorsal fins of the larvae and juveniles of L. crocea (0-30 days post-hatching [DPH]). Results showed that the notochord of the larvae and juveniles of L. crocea was tubular. A

Benthic fish, such as the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas, 1814) tend to swim near the bottom, especially at increased water velocities. To test whether these fish have a hydraulic advantage from swimming near the bottom and how the substrate affects the forces experienced, we measured the hydraulic forces experienced by preserved fish in a flow channel. The fish were tested 5.0 mm above the bottom at smooth and rough surface, and in the water column (10.0 cm elevation) above smooth and rough surface at 0.95 m/s water velocity. No significant effect among the mean hydraulic forces wa

The false clown anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a protandrous hermaphrodite with a distinctive reproductive behavior. This study elucidates the genetic mechanisms and timing of sex changes in captive-bred A. ocellaris by examining the expression of key genes involved in this process, specifically cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b. Gonadal histological analyses and gene expression studies were conducted on subadult fish paired for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 16 months. Our findings reveal that alterations in cyp19 gene expression coincide with a pairing period starting after 3 months. Both cyp19a1a and cyp

Large numbers of lumpfish are produced for the Norwegian salmon industry and are used to combat sea lice infestations. Periodically high mortality of farmed lumpfish demonstrates the need to improve farming conditions and animal welfare. As part of such efforts, the present work tested the efficacy of three anaesthetic chemicals on lumpfish fries (average weight of 0.97 g). The anaesthetic impact from salinity (15 ppt-18 ppt), temperature (12°C versus 7 and 18°C), and fasting conditions (three days) was also examined. Surgical anaesthesia was induced within 3 to 5 min (preferred time) at conce

Three species of snappers from artisanal, small-scale fisheries were examined for the presence of parasites. A total of 139 lutjanid fish were collected: 69 specimens of Lutjanus analis, 47 specimens of Lutjanus vivanus, and 23 specimens of Lutjanus synagris. Encysted plerocercoid of trypanorhynch cestodes found at necropsy in the viscera of snappers were sampled for parasitological analysis. These plerocercoid larvae belong to the genera Floriceps, Pseudogrillotia , and Oncomegas. Although these parasites do not have any zoonotic potential, fish with heavy loads of plerocercoids are rejected

In light of an increasing trend in fish biology towards using static respirometry techniques without the inclusion of a mixing mechanism and without accurately accounting for the influence of microbial (background) respiration, this paper quantifies the effect of these approaches on the oxygen consumption rates (ṀO2 ) measured from juvenile barramundi Lates calcarifer (mean ± s.e. mass = 20·31 ± 0·81 g) and adult spiny chromis damselfish Acanthochromis polyacanthus (22·03 ± 2·53 g). Background respiration changed consistently and in a sigmoidal manner over time in the treatment with a mixing d

Since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, anecdotal observations of Red Snapper Lutjanus campechanus from the northern Gulf of Mexico exhibiting unusual external lesions have been reported. Two opportunistic bacterial fish pathogens, Vibrio vulnificus and Photobacterium damselae, were recovered from the fish and were deemed responsible for the abnormalities. However, the culturable microbiota of healthy Red Snapper has not yet been characterized. We analyzed the heterotrophic bacteria associated with healthy Red Snapper caught off the Louisiana coast. In total, 179 isolates from 60 fish w
