Perfectionism, Self-Esteem, and the Will to Win Among Adolescent Athletes: The Effects of the Level of Achievements and Gender.

This study examined the relationships between perfectionism, self-esteem, and the will to win and the effects of gender and the level of achievement on these variables. A total of 318 adolescents in the age group of 12-19 years (M = 16.10 ± 1.01) completed the self-esteem questionnaire, the will-to-win questionnaire, and the perfectionism inventory. Interstate level (ISL) athletes obtained higher scores than interdistrict level (IDL) athletes on the following variables: self-esteem, the will to win, and four of the eight dimensions of perfectionism (i.e., concern over mistakes, the need for ap

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) in the treatment of perfectionism: A case study.

We present the case of an adult male ("Jake") with chronic Anorexia Nervosa, buttressed by dysfunctional levels of perfectionism and aggravated by long-standing mood and anxiety disturbance, successfully treated with Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT). RO DBT is an evidence-based, transdiagnostic psychotherapy designed to address perfectionistic overcontrolled coping through teaching flexibility, openness, and healthy self-doubt. We illustrate this treatment approach by means of describing its application to this case, including discussing core RO DBT treatment strategies and

How Perfectionism and Eating Disorder Symptoms Contribute to Searching Weight-Loss Information on the Internet?

Background and Objectives: Eating disorder (ED) symptoms are a growing problem and modern technologies introduced a new and unexplored potential risk factor for vulnerable individuals. It is fairly common for women to use the Internet in order to find information about various weight-loss methods, but it was further questioned whether perfectionism and eating disorder symptomatology could be linked to this behavior. Materials and Methods: Participants were 228 women (Mean age = 30.5; SD = 9.43) recruited via social media, who provided responses on measures of perfectionism, eating disorder sym

Subtypes of Adaptive and Maladaptive Perfectionism in Anorexia Nervosa: Associations with Eating Disorder and Affective Symptoms.

Perfectionism is hypothesized to contribute to the etiology of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, there is little research regarding whether individuals with AN can be classified according to maladaptive (e.g., evaluative concerns) and adaptive (e.g., high personal standards) facets of perfectionism that predict distinct outcomes and might warrant different intervention approaches. In this study, a latent profile analysis was conducted using data from adults with AN (n = 118). Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Frost et al. Cognitive Therapy and Research, 14(5), 449-46, 1990) subscales w

Self-reported and performance based perfectionism in mothers of individuals with Anorexia Nervosa: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Perfectionism is implicated in the development and maintenance of Anorexia Nervosa and there is some evidence that perfectionism may be elevated in family members. However to date there are no studies investigating behavioural aspects of perfectionism in unaffected mothers. METHODS: Forty-one participants took part in this pilot study: 21 unaffected mothers of individuals with Anorexia Nervosa and 20 healthy control mothers. Participants completed two performance based tasks assessing perfectionism-a text replication task and a bead sorting task-along with self-report measures of

Anxiety comorbidity in bipolar spectrum disorders: the mediational role of perfectionism in prospective depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) are highly comorbid with anxiety, which is associated with an extended duration and exacerbation of depressive symptoms. Unfortunately, the underlying mechanisms are not known. This study examined the role of maladaptive cognitive styles in the co-occurrence of BSDs and anxiety disorders and prediction of depressive symptoms. METHODS: Participants included 141 young adults (69.6% female, mean age=20.24, SD=2.11), in one of three groups: a BSD group (bipolar II, cyclothymia, n=48), a comorbid BSD/anxiety group (n=50), and a demographically-matched

Are maladaptive schema domains and perfectionism related to body image concerns in eating disorder patients?

Both maladaptive schemas (MS) and perfectionism have been associated with eating pathology. However, previous research has not examined these variables simultaneously and has not studied possible mediating relationships between MS and multidimensional perfectionism for body image concerns in eating disorder (ED) patients. Eighty-eight female ED patients completed the Young Schema Questionnaire, the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and the Body Attitude Test. Body image concerns were found to be positively related to Personal Standards (PS) and Evaluative Concerns (EC) perfectionism

Telling perfectionists about their perfectionism: Effects of providing feedback on emotional reactivity and psychological symptoms.

A randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted to determine the efficacy of receiving feedback in a sample of maladaptive perfectionists. A total of 60 young adults were randomly assigned to a feedback intervention or control group. Hierarchical Linear Modeling was utilized to analyze the effects of perfectionism over time, as well as the effects of treatment condition on the relationship between perfectionism and outcomes. Measures of interest included emotional reactivity, self-esteem, and psychological distress. Findings revealed that providing feedback to maladaptive perfectionists

Perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and health-thinness-cleanliness motivations as primary correlates of orthorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with eating foods perceived as healthy or clean. Despite growing research interest, risk factors and underlying motivations for ON remain poorly understood. This study examined demographic factors, psychological correlates, and dietary motivations associated with ON symptomatology, building on McComb and Mills' (2019) theoretical model. METHODS: Participants (N = 697) completed validated measures of ON, alongside assessments of demographic factors (age, gender, socioeconomic status, dietary means), psychological v

From stress to feedback: How supervisor perfectionism drives graduate students' feedback seeking and avoiding behaviors.

As academic competition intensifies, graduate students are facing increasing psychological pressure in high-stress academic environments, which negatively influences both their mental well-being and academic performance. However, there are still certain gaps regarding how supervisor perfectionism influences student feedback behaviors. This study explores how supervisor perfectionism influences student feedback behavior through their perceived stress and examines the moderating role of supervisor-student exchange quality in this process. Based on the cognitive appraisal theory of stress, this r

Personality traits in psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) and psychogenic movement disorder (PMD): Neuroticism and perfectionism.

OBJECTIVE: Psychogenic movement disorder (PMD) and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) are two subtypes of conversion disorder (CD). In this case-control study, we asked whether these subtypes varied as a function of personality and history of childhood abuse. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with PMD from the Human Motor Control Section Clinic at the National Institutes of Health, 43 patients with PNES from the Rhode Island Hospital Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology Division, and 26 healthy volunteers (HC) received a battery of neurological, psychiatric and psychological assessments,

Difficulties in Accepting the Past as a Mediator between Perfectionism and Symptoms of Depression among University Students in Yazd.

Objective: The Existential Model of Perfectionism and Depressive Symptoms (EMPDS) assumes that difficulties in accepting the past explains why socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP) is linked to depressive symptoms. Prior research on EMPDS relies on homogeneous samples and cross-sectional designs, limiting our understanding of EMPDS. More importantly, SPP may be affected by different cultural norms, and no study to date has examined this model in Iran. This study aimed to test EMPDS in Iran using a moderated mediation framework, a heterogeneous sample, and a longitudinal design with two waves

Multidimensional perfectionism and academic stress: A study on the chain mediation effect based on cognitive behavioral theory.

In the contemporary Chinese educational context, university students are facing increasingly salient academic pressure. This study aims to examine how Multidimensional Perfectionism influences Academic Stress among Chinese university students through the chain mediating roles of Rumination and Obsessive-Compulsive Tendencies, and to test its underlying mechanisms within the framework of cognitive-behavioral theory. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with questionnaire data collected from 450 students in Chinese higher education institutions. Structural equation modeling was used to

The association between self-oriented perfectionism and suicidal ideation in adolescents: The buffering role of social connectedness.

This study examined and compared the moderating roles of connectedness to parents, peers, friends, and school in the association between self-oriented perfectionism and suicidal ideation among adolescents in a non-clinical, community sample. Data on suicidal ideation, self-oriented perfectionism, and connectedness in these four domains were collected using self-report instruments from adolescents with no psychiatric history. The results showed that although connectedness to parents, friends, peers, and school was generally associated with lower suicidal ideation, it was only connectedness to f

From theory to research: Interpretational guidelines, statistical guidance, and a shiny app for the model of excellencism and perfectionism.

After decades of research and debates about whether perfectionism is healthy or unhealthy, the Model of Excellencism and Perfectionism (MEP) recently differentiated between people striving for high standards (excellence strivers) and those pursuing perfectionistic standards (perfection strivers). In this study, we devised and tested an interpretational framework of nine scenarios to help determine whether perfectionism is beneficial, unneeded, or harmful by comparing the outcomes of excellence and perfection strivers. In a cross-sectional study with university students (N = 271; Study 1), we f

Intolerance of uncertainty and maladaptive perfectionism as maintenance factors for eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) are highly comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In order to develop treatments which better address commonly comorbid ED and OCD symptoms, it is important to identify potential shared mechanisms. Two potential shared mechanisms are maladaptive perfectionism and intolerance of uncertainty (IU). We aimed to assess how maladaptive perfectionism and IU may contribute to the maintenance of ED and OCD symptoms in individuals with EDs. METHODS: In the current study (N = 168 individuals with an ED), we analysed cross-sectional and prospective path model

Perfectionism and Identity Processes in Two Domains: Mediational Roles of Worry, Rumination, Indecisiveness, Shame, and Guilt.

The objective of the study was to assess the relationships between two dimensions of perfectionism, that is, perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns, and identity processes in the domains of future plans and education. It was hypothesized that such consequences of perfectionism as worry, rumination, indecisiveness, and guilt and shame proneness would be mediators of the perfectionism-identity relationship. A total of 696 students took part in the study (M age = 26.74, SD = 7.56). It was found that perfectionistic strivings may promote the development of identity by supporting ad
