OBJECTIVE: To evaluate eventual contact sensitization in 7 patients with plasma cell vulvitis (PCV).
STUDY DESIGN: Seven women with PCV underwent patch tests with the Italian standard series and with additional batteries of allergens (perfumes, preservatives, emulsifiers, medicaments and corticosteroid series).
RESULTS: One patient experienced a positive reaction t o balsam of Peru and wool alcohol.
CONCLUSION: Patch testing is not normally necessary in the management of PCV. However, when a patient with PCV complains of burning or pruritus after application of topical products, patch tests

Erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC), a disease belonging to the poorly characterized category of 'figurate erythemas', has been associated with a variety of conditions, such as connective tissue diseases, infections, neoplasms and drug reactions. Today's fragrances are present in more than just perfumes, having become ubiquitous in skin care products such as creams, shampoos, sun tan lotion and deodorants. While aromatics can arouse the senses, aromatic compounds applied to skin can also cause allergic contact dermatitis. This article describes diagnosis, limitations of patch testing for fragrance mix 1 and fragrance mix 2, the relevance of fragrance concentration in products, use testing of common consumer products and our current recommendations in regards to the management of fragrance contact allergy.

Positive patch test reactions to 2% cinnamic aldehyde were obtained from 2.8% of 34 males and 9.1% of 55 females. The 9.1% female reactivity may be traceable to perfumed cosmetics. Simultaneous Jasmin allergy is documented as is the occurrence of alpha-amyl cinnamic aldehyde in synthetic Jasmin. The relevance of these reactions is discussed. In two of the patients a proper diagnosis was not made from the original contact history. Only after a screening tray demonstration of cinnamic aldehyde allergy could a relevant history be taken from these patients.
