INTRODUCTION: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease caused by feline coronavirus, most commonly associated with effusions in body cavities, while pericardial involvement remains rarely described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A three-year clinical study (2021-2024) included 256 cats with PCR-confirmed effusive FIP, of which 37 presented fluid accumulation exclusively in the pericardial sac. Diagnosis was based on real-time PCR analysis of pericardial fluid, echocardiographic examination and measurement of serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentrations.

INTRODUCTION: Cytologic evaluation of pericardial fluid is essential for diagnosing malignant pericardial effusions secondary to metastatic disease and for guiding appropriate clinical management; however, large cohort and up-to-date studies on malignancy rates and distribution of primary tumor sites is lacking.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of pericardial fluid specimens from 2 large academic medical centers over a 10-year period was conducted. Clinical and specimen characteristics were correlated with cytologic diagnoses, and compared with surgical pathology pericardial sp

Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma (PMPM) is an extremely rare, highly lethal and often misdiagnosed tumor. We report a 60-year-old woman complaining of dry cough, shortness of breath and exertional dyspnea due to a large pericardial effusion. The pericardial fluid volume declined after pericardiocentesis; analysis of the fluid revealed malignant cells and was negative for tuberculosis. Subsequently, the patient developed a compression of the superior vena cava and pericardial constriction. The patient's symptoms marginally improved after partial pericardiectomy, and a diagnosis of per

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Abnormal accumulation of pericardial fluid is a common cardiac condition with different etiologies. Draining of the pericardial fluid (pericardiocentesis) is often indicated for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and is performed in an elective or emergent setting. Echocardiography is the primary imaging method for diagnosing, localizing, and quantifying pericardial effusion as well as evaluating its hemodynamic effects, including the presence of cardiac tamponade. In this manuscript, we review the indications for pericardiocentesis and provide practical step-by-step guidan

A patient with progressive systemic sclerosis was evaluated for dyspnea. Echocardiography revealed enlarged right heart chambers, a moderate pericardial effusion, and diastolic collapse of the left ventricle. Hemodynamic studies before and after removal of pericardial fluid were consistent with compromise of left, but not right, heart filling by the pericardial fluid.

Fifty-three pericardiocentesis procedures were performed on 48 patients from 1993 to 2000 at our coronary care unit. Percutaneous puncture (anterior thoracic in 43 cases, subxiphoid in 10 cases) was performed at the site closest to the exploring probe, where the largest amount of fluid was detected. A needle carrier supported by a bracket with two fixed angulations was mounted on the probe. The needle was advanced through the tissues and inside the pericardial space under continuous visualization. The procedure was successful in 52 of 53 cases. In 1 case of diagnostic pericardiocentesis, the p

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the optimal techniques for the performance of pericardiocentesis in contemporary practice, highlighting the indications, contraindications, and techniques used. Routine pericardial catheter management and the diagnostic role of pericardial fluid analysis are described.
RECENT FINDINGS: Echocardiographic-guided pericardiocentesis should be considered the therapy of choice in current clinical practice and may be performed safely despite the presence of coagulopathy and thrombocytopenia in the hands of expert operators. Computed tomography (CT)-guided te

BACKGROUND: Pericardial effusion (PE) indicates the build-up of fluid within the pericardial sac, which encases the heart. The present study was undertaken to assess the clinical profile, etiology of pericardial effusion and to determine the correlation of cardiac tamponade and constrictive pericarditis with etiology.
METHODS: A prospective observational hospital based longitudinal study was undertaken among the 88 newly diagnosed and known patients of pericardial effusion who are above 18 years. The clinical profile of pericardial effusion including history, examination, standard lab paramet

The hemodynamic stability of the heart and pericardium are maintained by the pericardial fluid of volume ∼10-50 ml. Pericardial effusion is associated with the abnormal accumulation of pericardial fluid in the pericardial cavity. Numerous imaging techniques are utilized to evaluate pericardial effusion including chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, transthoracic echocardiography, computed tomography scan, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and pericardiocentesis. Once diagnosed, there are numerous treatment options available for the management of patients with pericardial effusion. These include v

A 54-year-old male with chronic pancreatitis presented with dyspnea. Computed tomography scans demonstrated a subdiaphragmatic fluid collection with pericardial fistulization. Pericardial fluid cultures were polymicrobial in nature. Purulent pericarditis is rare but carries a high mortality rate. We present the first documented case of pancreatico-pericardial fistulization causing purulent pericarditis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the evolution in the approach to pericardial effusions and drainage from a historical perspective, the present state, and pathways for future innovative therapies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Incorporation of advanced imaging tools has dramatically improved the safety profile of pericardial interventions. Outcome data allow for refined approaches to management of pericardial disease in special populations, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension. Consideration of intrapericardial interventions and pharmacotherapy represent novel and promising approaches to management of per

In oncological imaging, staging with computed tomography (CT) is widely used to determine treatment. Misinterpretation of fluid in pericardial recesses as mediastinal adenopathy can lead to inaccurate clinical staging and inappropriate management. In this review, we describe normal pericardial anatomy and illustrate imaging features to differentiate fluid in pericardial sinuses and recesses from mediastinal adenopathy.

A case of pericardial extramedullary hematopoiesis in a neonate with congenital heart disease was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. Undifferentiated blasts, promyelocytes, metamyelocytes and nucleated red blood cells were evident in the pericardial fluid specimen. The differential diagnosis of bone marrow contamination of pericardial fluid secondary to inadvertent sampling of neonatal hypodense bone tissue is also discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of neonatal pericardial extramedullary hematopoiesis associated with congenital heart disease.

Chylopericardium is a rare clinical entity in which chylous fluid accumulates in the pericardial cavity. We report a case of primary idiopathic chylopericardium associated with multiple, small cervicomediastinal cystic hygromas occurring in an asymptomatic 43-year-old woman with no history of trauma, thoracic surgery, malignancy, infection or tuberculosis. Echocardiography showed a large amount of pericardial effusions and pericardial fluid analysis revealed inappropriately elevated triglyceride. We did not demonstrate communication between the thoracic duct and the pericardial sac by lymphang

Cardiac tamponade is the phenomenon of hemodynamic compromise caused by a pericardial effusion. Following a myocardial infarction, the most common causes of pericardial fluid include early pericarditis, Dressler's syndrome, and hemopericardium secondary to a free wall rupture. On transthoracic echocardiography, pericardial fluid appears as an echo-free space in between the visceral and parietal layers of the pericardium. Pericardial fat has a similar appearance on echocardiography and it may be difficult to discern the two entities. We present a case of a post-MI patient demonstrating pseudo t

Patients with cardiac tamponade or large malignant pericardial effusion, who survived longer than 30 days after withdrawal of catheter from the pericardial space, entered the study. Main goal of investigations was: evaluation of the effectiveness and side-effects of intrapericardial administration of cisplatin in cases with malignant pericardial effusion (MPE) and cardiac tamponade or large pericardial effusion in a course of the lung cancer. Sixteen patients (four women and 12 men), mean age 53 years, median age 57 years, range 27-70 years, entered this retrospective study. After pericardioce

Despite its value in the diagnosis of pericardial disease, two-dimensional echocardiography also is known to produce confounding results. Ten patients had juxtacardiac masses simulating pericardial tumor implants on echocardiographic examination ("pericardial pseudotumor") caused by juxtacardiac pulmonary atelectasis or lobar collapse. The atelectatic nature of these masses was based on echocardiographic delineation of pericardial and pleural anatomy, combined with ancillary radiographic and CT studies. Drainage of pleural fluid also led to disappearance of the masses on echocardiographic exam

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease (FD) is an X-chromosome-linked inherited disorder of glycosphingolipid metabolism due to deficient or absent lysosomal α-galactosidase A activity.
CASE SUMMARY: A 51-year-old Japanese woman with a previous diagnosis of FD presented with pericardial effusion. The exudative pericardial fluid contained globotriaosylsphingosine. Left ventricular hypertrophy progressed despite regular administration of agalsidase alfa every 2 weeks over a 7-year period, with increases in plasma levels of globotriaosylsphingosine and interleukin (IL)-18. In addition, the IL-6 level in the
