Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst.

BACKGROUND: An odontogenic keratocyst can develop at virtually any site in the jaws and is of concern because of its aggressive clinical behavior. It represents 3% to 12% of all odontogenic cysts. This paper describes the rare peripheral presentation of an odontogenic keratocyst localized to the maxillary anterior gingiva and its differential diagnosis. METHODS: A patient presented with a round yellow nodule on the maxillary gingiva between the left canine and first premolar. Clinical examination ruled out periapical abscess, periodontal abscess, and lateral periodontal cyst. A differential d

Bone regeneration in advanced periodontitis lesions after a single episode of root planing--case report with ten-years of follow-up.

This report describes a significant bone regeneration in a mandibular molar with advancing long-standing periodontal disease (defect extending to apex and into furcation) following a single episode of scaling and root planing. A 52-year-old female suffered from generalized moderate periodontitis for two years. An acute periodontal abscess with a 12 mm probing depth around the right mandibular first molar was noted. After incision and drainage, thorough scaling and root planing was performed under local anaesthesia. Three months later, radiographic examination showed complete bone regeneration

Multiple odontogenic abscesses. Thoracic and abdomino-perineal extension in an immuno competent patient.

INTRODUCTION: Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation is involved in atherothrombosis. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate whether statins affect neutrophil extracellular traps activation and release (NETosis) in coronary artery disease (CAD), and whether such changes show associations with statin‑induced additional effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 130 patients with advanced CAD before and at least 6 months after initiation of high‑dose statin therapy with rosuvastatin 40 mg/d or atorvastatin 80 mg/d. The levels of circulating citrullinated histone H3 (H3cit), myeloperoxidase

The importance of mechanosensitive cell mediated prostaglandin and nitric oxide synthesis in the pathogenesis of apical periodontitis: comparative with chronic periodontitis.

OBJECTIVES: Mechano-sensitive odontoblast cells, which sense mechanical loading and various stresses in the tooth structure, synthesize early signaling molecules such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide (NO) as an adaptive response. It is thought that these synthesized molecules can be used for the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal and periapical diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the severity of apical periodontitis (AP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) and serum (s) TNF-α, IL-10, PGE2 and NO levels, as well as PGE2 and NO levels in gingival

A multicenter study evaluating the sensitization potential of enamel matrix derivative after treatment of two infrabony defects.

BACKGROUND: Several studies reported some success toward regeneration in infrabony defects using enamel matrix derivative (EMD). Clinically and statistically significant improvements in probing depth reduction, clinical attachment levels, and bone fill have been demonstrated. This multi-center study evaluated the potential for sensitization to EMD in a subgroup of periodontal patients treated at least twice with at least 2 months between treatments. METHODS: Three hundred seventy-six (376) patients in 11 university-based postgraduate periodontics programs and five private practices were selec

Periodontal treatment of patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare condition in which fragile vascular walls lead to increased risks of bleeding, cerebral abscesses, arteriovenous malformations, anemia, and thrombosis. To date, no protocol has been established for optimizing the clinical outcomes of periodontal treatment in patients with this condition. The aim of this case report is to describe a safe clinical approach to periodontal treatment in a patient with HHT. A 39-year-old woman had a history of multiple macules on the oral mucosa, and a diagnosis of HHT was made based on the Curaçao diagnostic cri

The first case of deep neck abscess due to Filifactor alocis co-infected with Eggerthia catenaformis, Parvimonas micra, and Streptococcusconstellatus.

Filifactor alocis, an anaerobic Gram-positive rod, has garnered interest from its association with periodontal disease. Extraoral infections by F. alocis are rare; only seven cases have been reported. We report the first case in which we identified F. alocis as one of the causative organisms of a deep neck abscess. A 71-year-old male on hemodialysis came to our hospital with a fever and left buccal pain. The patient's left neck was swollen, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed an abscess with gas extending from the left cheek to the deep neck. We diagnosed the patient with a deep n

Botryomycosis: first report of human brain involvement.

A 57-year-old man, previously well except for dental caries and a history of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, presented with marching right-sided motor seizures of sudden onset. Cerebral arteriography and scan demonstrated an avascular left frontal lobe mass. At operation, it was identified as an abscess and was totally excised. Histologically, granules resembling those seen in actinomycosis were demonstrated in the abscess wall, but special stains revealed gram-positive cocci in chains within and outside the granules. Fungal spores, mycelia, or branching filamentous structures were absent. Aci

Generalized aggressive periodontitis in preschoolers: report of a case in a 3-1/2 year old.

UNLABELLED: Destructive forms of periodontal disease in children are uncommon. Severe periodontal destruction can be a manifestation of a systemic disease; however, in some patients, the underlying cause of increased susceptibility and early onset is still unknown. OBJECTIVE: To describe an effective therapeutic approach to GeneralizedAggressive Periodontitis (GAgP) in children, based on a 3-1/2 year-old male patient referred to the Hospital due to early loss of incisors, gingivitis, and tooth mobility in his primary dentition. Intraoral examination revealed severe gingival inflammation, dent

Septic polyarthritis with Mycoplasma salivarium in a patient with common variable immunodeficiency: case report and review of the literature.

Mycoplasma salivarium is a common mycoplasma usually isolated from human oropharynx, particularly from individuals with periodontal disease. It is also among the more common mycoplasmal contaminants of eukaryotic cell cultures. Although M. salivarium has been isolated occasionally from abscesses and other sterile sites, to our knowledge, only three cases of septic arthritis have been documented in the past due to this organism, all in patients with humoral immunodeficiency. We now report a fourth case of septic polyarthritis in a patient with profound hypoimmunoglobulinemia who had experienced

Dental disease in slender lorises (Loris tardigradus).

Necropsies were performed in 25 slender lorises (Loris tardigradus) from a colony at Bochum University. In seven adult individuals, teeth were missing, loose, or severely affected by dental calculus. In one of these cases, a severe periodontal disease was seen without abscess formation. In another four lorises purulent/gangrenous inflammation was found next to the teeth either in the maxillary or the mandibular region.
