Obesity and its association with chronic periodontitis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Relationship among periodontitis, obesity, and chronic diseases may be multidirectional. Inflammatory diseases such as periodontitis induce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6. It has been suggested that the secretion of TNF-α by adipose tissue triggered by lipopolysaccharides from periodontal Gram-negative bacteria promotes hepatic dyslipidemia and decreases insulin sensitivity. AIM: To study the association of obesity with the severity of periodontitis and to compare the blood glucose levels and plasma lipid profile in obese and non-obese s

Periodontal outcomes: Surgical exposure versus extraction of impacted maxillary canines.

Impacted maxillary canines pose a clinical dilemma in selecting an optimal treatment modality while preserving periodontal health. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate periodontal outcomes between surgical exposure with orthodontic traction and extraction in 100 patients over 12 months. Indices assessed included plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss, gingival recession and alveolar bone levels. Results showed significantly greater increases in PPD, CAL, GR and bone loss in the surgical exposure group, while extraction maintained relati

Significance of the width of keratinized mucosa on the health status of the supporting tissue around implants supporting overdentures.

Our objective was to determine the association between keratinized mucosa width and the health status of the supporting tissue around implants supporting overdentures. Sixty-six functioning dental implants were examined. Periodontal parameters measured included gingival index, plaque index, bleeding on probing, probing depth, mucosal recession, periodontal attachment level, radiographic bone level, and width of keratinized mucosa. A negative correlation was found between keratinized mucosa width and mucosal recession and periodontal attachment level. When data were dichotomized by keratinized

Saliva Microbiome Changes in Patients With Periodontitis With and Without Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Objective: The oral microbiota plays a key part in the initial colonization by pathogens and the chronic inflammatory reaction of the host. We measured variations in the salivary microbiota and evaluated their potential associations with periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: We investigated the salivary microbiota of patients with COPD and periodontitis (n = 21) compared with that in patients with periodontitis alone (n = 36) and with healthy controls (HCs; n = 14), using pyrosequencing of polymerase chain reaction-amplified 16s rRNA genes. Results: Bacterial

The Impact of the Electronic Cigarettes Vaping on the Salivary Superoxide Dismutase, Zinc and Copper in Comparison to Tobacco Cigarette Smoking.

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) have adverse effects on human health similar to tobacco cigarettes. This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the impact of ECs versus tobacco cigarettes on salivary superoxide dismutase (SOD) and its cofactors, zinc and copper, as well as their effect on the periodontal health status. METHODS: One hundred sixty-five dental students (21-23 years) were categorised into: tobacco cigarette smokers, EC users and non-smokers (control). Unstimulated saliva was collected to determine the concentrations of salivary SOD, zinc and copper were analysed

Multivariate analysis of treatment choices, disease activity, comorbidities, and oral impairments in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that affects the synovial joints and is often associated with multiple comorbidities. Emerging evidence suggests a bidirectional link between RA and periodontal inflammation, wherein shared inflammatory mediators contribute to disease severity and therapeutic outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine the relationships among demographic and clinical characteristics, comorbidities, periodontal impairment assessed using Russell's Periodontal Index, systemic disease activity measured by Disease A

Further evidence of the association between periodontal conditions and coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that chronic infections, such as periodontal diseases, could play a role in the initiation and development of coronary artery disease (CAD). The present study was intended to test for a possible association between presence and severity of periodontitis and coronary artery disease in a Belgian population. METHODS: A total of 108 CAD patients (mean age 59.2 +/- 11 years) and 62 presumably healthy controls (mean age 57.7 +/- 9 years) were enrolled in the study. Probing depth, periodontal pocket bleeding index (PPBI), plaque index, furcation involvements,

Effect of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on gingival crevicular fluid levels of Interleukin-35 in patients with periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: Interleukin (IL)-35 is a comparatively novel immunosuppressive cytokine produced by T-regulatory cells, the purpose of which in periodontal well being and disease still eludes the researchers. This study intends to measure and compare the levels of IL-35 in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) taken from periodontitis patients before and at first, second and third week post non-surgical periodontal therapy. METHODOLOGY: ology: Twenty patients having generalized chronic periodontitis (mean age of 36.25 ± 5.12 years) with moderate to severe disease were assessed clinically for the followi

Common carotid and brachial artery hemodynamic alterations in periodontal disease.

AIM: In patients affected by periodontal disease, hypertension and systemic inflammation might cause an arterial hemodynamic derangement; this, in turn, can act as a mediator of the atherogenic process often seen in these patients. This study aimed at a comprehensive hemodynamic evaluation in periodontal patients. METHODS: Fourty-eight subjects participating to a cardiovascular prevention programme were enrolled. Periodontitis, classical risk factors for atherosclerosis, and shear and tensile forces in both carotid and brachial arteries were evaluated. Calculated periodontal indexes were plaq

Development of a system to assess visible and hidden gingival recession.

The accurate assessment of gingival recession is important because of soft tissue deterioration and/or the state of soft tissue health. While recession of the gingival margin is a common and important symptom of periodontal disease, it also refers to the location of the gingiva and not to its condition. Recession can occur at all tooth surfaces. This paper describes a new system designed to measure two parameters of gingival recession. One parameter of recession is visible above the gumline to an observer, while another parameter is hidden by the gingiva itself. Visible recession is the shift
