Clinical and electrophysiologic findings on 136 patients (39 women and 97 men; mean age = 33.2 years) with traumatic peripheral nerve injuries were reviewed. Motor vehicular collisions (MVCs) caused 39.7% and gunshot wounds (GSWs) produced 32.4% of the nerve injuries studied. Other factors such as falls, lacerations, work-related injuries, knife wounds, and blunt traumas produced the remaining 27.9% of the nerve injuries in the study group. Peripheral nerves of the upper limbs (79.6%) were disproportionately damaged in MVCs compared with those of the lower limbs (20.4 %). In MVCs, the brachial

Peripheral nerve injury is a relatively common clinical condition that predominantly results from sensory, motor, and nutritional disorders. These can be due to aging, external forces, diseases, or changes in physical and chemical environments. Although interventions, including relevant drugs and surgeries, have led to advancements in peripheral nerve repair, achieving complete recovery remains a challenge. Untimely treatment and rehabilitation can lead to lifelong disabilities and neurological pain. Exercise is a low-cost intervention that plays an active role in the rehabilitation of patient

The development of Schwann cells, which myelinate axons in the peripheral nervous system, is critically dependent on MEK/ERK signaling. While Ets-domain transcription factors (Etv1, Etv4, Etv5) are downstream effectors of this pathway, only Etv1 has been specifically linked to Schwann cell development. Here, we examined the functions of Etv5, which is expressed in Schwann cell precursors, neural crest cells and satellite glia, at embryonic stages and at low levels in mature Schwann cells. In hypomorphic Etv5tm1Kmm homozygous mutant mice, no overt defects in Schwann cell differentiation were ob

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) occur in approximately 13-23 per 100,000 individuals, predominantly affecting young and middle-aged adults. These injuries often require a lengthy recovery period, placing substantial burdens on healthcare systems and national economies. Current treatment strategies have not significantly shortened this lengthy regenerative process, highlighting the urgent need for innovative therapeutic interventions. Chemokines were originally noted for their powerful ability to recruit immune cells; however, as research has advanced, it has become increasingly evident that th

INTRODUCTION: Although several studies have investigated models of nerve electrical injury, only a few have focused on electrical injury to peripheral nerves, which is a common and intractable problem in clinical practice. Here, we describe an experimental rat model of peripheral nerve electrical injury and its assessment.
METHODS: A total of 120 animals were subjected to short-term corrective electrostimulation (50 Hz, 1-s duration) applied at varying voltages (control, 65, 75, 100, 125, and 150 V) to the exposed left sciatic nerve. Behavioural testing, electrophysiological measurements, and

BACKGROUND: Although most severe peripheral nerve injuries result from high-speed mechanisms, there is no laboratory model to replicate this clinical condition.
OBJECTIVE: To qualitatively and quantitatively describe microanatomical injury of rapid stretch.
METHODS: The sciatic nerves of 36 Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to rapid-stretch nerve injury, using fixed-direction strain produced via constrained weight drop applied to an intact nerve. Nerve injury severity was categorized by biomechanical parameters. Injury to nerve microarchitecture was quantified with serial longitudinal secti

Peripheral nerve injury causes redox stress in injured neurons by upregulations of pro-oxidative enzymes, but most neurons survive suggesting an activation of endogenous defense against the imbalance. As potential candidates we assessed thioredoxin-fold proteins, called redoxins, which maintain redox homeostasis by reduction of hydrogen peroxide or protein dithiol-disulfide exchange. Using a histologic approach, we show that the peroxiredoxins (Prdx1-6), the glutaredoxins (Glrx1, 2, 3 and 5), thioredoxin (Txn1 and 2) and their reductases (Txnrd1 and 2) are expressed in neurons, glial and/or va

BACKGROUND: A well-known complication of peripheral nerve block is peripheral nerve injury, whether from the needle or toxicity of the medication used. In this study, we sought to determine the extent of damage that results from intrafascicular injection of various commonly used local anesthetics (LAs).
METHODS: Sixteen Lewis rats received an intrafascicular injection of saline (control) or 1 of 3 LAs (bupivacaine, lidocaine, or ropivacaine) into the sciatic nerve (n = 4). At a 2-week end point, the sciatic nerves were harvested for histomorphometric and electron microscopic analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of peripheral facial nerve reconstruction by surgical treatment and determine the influence factors for recovery.
METHODS: From 1999 to 2009, 104 patients underwent surgical rehabilitation for transected peripheral facial nerve injury in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology. The age ranged from 2 to 77 years with a median age of 30 years. Sixty-five of the 72 cases (90.2%) who underwent facial nerve anastomosis and 24 of the 32 patients (75.0%) underwent facial nerve grafting. All these patien

Motoneurons are large multipolar neurons with cell bodies located in the brainstem and spinal cord, and peripheral axons ending in neuromuscular junctions. Peripheral nerve damage, outside the blood-brain barrier (BBB), results in both retrograde changes centrally and anterograde changes along the length of the axon distal to the lesion site. Often, peripheral nerve damage is accompanied by motoneuron cell death, unless axon regrowth and target reconnection occur so that the target muscle can provide essential neurotrophic factors. It is essential that the motoneuron cell body survive during t

We report a patient with proximal right upper limb tremor, secondary to direct peripheral nerve lesion caused by prior thoracic surgery. Electromyography demonstrated neurogenic abnormalities and tremor in muscles innervated by the thoracodorsal and long thoracic nerves. Somatosensory evoked potentials, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and MRI of the cervical and thoracic spine were normal. Tremor persisted in REM and non-REM sleep. These findings suggest a peripheral generator.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the latest development in diagnosis and treatment of the injury to the peripheral nerve.
METHODS: The literature at home and abroad was reviewed, and the research findings with clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment for the injury to the peripheral nerve were summarized.
RESULTS: The treatment for the total brachial plexus avulsion injury was successfully performed by the extra-plexus nerve transfer. The avulsion of the brachial plexus could be directly repaired by the healthy C7 nerve root transfer through the anterior spinal approach. The forearm flexors c

In this study, we evaluated the effects of trapidil on crush injury by monitoring nitric oxide, malondialdehyde and transforming growth factor-Beta2 levels and by transmission electron microscopy in the rat sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve was compressed for 20 sec by using a jewelers forceps. Trapidil treatment groups were administrated a single dose of trapidil (8 mg/kg) intraperitoneally just after the injury. The crush and crush + trapidil treatment groups were evaluated on the 2nd, 7th, 15th, 30th and 45th days of the post-crush period. On the 7th and 15th days, damage in thin and thick m

We continued our studies of ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, extending the reperfusion duration to 42 days to capture the fiber regeneration process. We used a rat model for IR injury produced by ligation and release of nooses around supplying vessels to the sciatic nerve. Fifty-six rats were used. One group (control N = 8) underwent sham ischemia; the other six groups (N = 8 each) underwent complete hind limb ischemia for 4 h followed by reperfusion durations of 0 h (ischemia alone), 3 h, 7 days, 14 days, 28 days, and 42 days. Behavioral and electrophysiological data were obtained immediatel

Nerve injury following operation is one of the main causes of the iatrogenic peripheral nerve injury. In order to learn lessons from these cases, one hundred and seven cases of peripheral nerve injury complicated with the orthopedic operations were analyzed. Forty-four cases were cutting injury during operation, made up 41% of all cases and 27 cases were stretch and compression injury, made up 25%. The involved nerves included 41 radial nerves and 24 common peroneal nerves, composing 60.7% of all nerve injury. The operations responsible were mainly the bone and joint operations, which made up

In an attempt to identify genes associated with Wallerian degeneration and peripheral nerve regeneration we have performed differential hybridization screening of a cDNA library from crushed rat sciatic nerve (7 days postlesion) using radioactively labeled cDNA prepared from poly(A)+ RNA of normal vs. crushed nerve. Screening of 5,000 randomly selected colonies yielded 24 distinct clones that were regulated following nerve injury. Fifteen of the differentially expressed sequences could be classified as induced, whereas 9 sequences appeared to be repressed at 1 week postcrush. Sequencing and co

I examined 11 patients with upper-extremity causalgia secondary to peripheral nerve injury occurring during routine venipuncture. The nerves affected were the medial (n = 5) and lateral (n = 2) antebrachial cutaneous in the antecubital fossa, the superficial radial at the wrist (n = 2), and the dorsal sensory branches in the hand (n = 2). Anatomically, nerves lie on a plane just beneath and in close proximity to veins, making them vulnerable to injury during the procedure.

The results of operative management of peripheral nerve postinjection injuries in 58 patients are reported. Neurolysis is one effective method in treating nerve postinjection injuries with excellent and good results observed in 64.6 percent of patients in this series. We also investigated the early changes in neurophysiological, histological and ultrastructural studies in the peroneal nerve of the rabbit. The results from early exploration and 0.9% NaCl irrigation were compared with those from late extraneural and intraneural neurolysis. The results showed that the injury occurs early in the n
